I am a lawyer, and in general I find courtroom dramas to be so technically inaccurate as to be distracting to the point of frustration, but Greaves gets the technical legal details, as well as the suspense and drama, dead right. I am still marveling over how his description of the business records exception to the hearsay rule the rule against permitting hearsay evidence in trial was correct, germane and entertaining!
Other than Jack McTaggart and his crew, who are improving with each novel this is the third McTaggart book there were no likable characters. Or rather, each was both likable and detestable, somehow at the same time, making each a good candidate for being the murderer, as well as an impossible choice.
Greaves alternates revealing the good side of one with the bad side of another leaving the reader having to constantly revise his pick of the ultimately bad one. Which is not to say that there aren't some memorable and pithy character descriptions: Greaves' send up of a bachelorette party weekend in Napa Valley wine-tasting party is wickedly hilarious and spot on.
Whereas the action of the other books stems from non-lawyer settings, insurance fraud, art forgery, etc, , with Jack bringing his legal talents to bear in solving the deception and catching the murderer, in this case plot itself is so essentially lawyerly that I fear to even summarize the situation would be to tip the solution to the murder.
Suffice it to say that in a novel crawling with lawyers, none of them, including Jack McTaggart and one other.. Buy this book and read it--you won't be disappointed! One person found this helpful. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. At some point during the discovery of the murderer of Phil Giroux, heir to the Napa Valley vineyard Chateau Giroux, you will suspect everyone. Possibly even yourself, as I did, since I didn't have a clue and kept reformulating my suspicions. Intriguing, fun and non-stop reading.
Refused to put it down till I got to the bottom of this caper. Started over coffee at 8am and finished shortly after dinner the same night. Laugh out loud moments from my new hero Jack MacTaggart are almost stand up comicesque you look it up and offered new ammunition for my own shtick.
Book number 3 in this series is another winner. Greaves, weaves a legal mystery that keeps you reading his books.
