Of course, there has to be struggle to make a story great so these lighthearted scenes are juxtaposed with the shadowy dealings of Intergang and a subplot about a jaded woman who was fired by Lex Luthor even though she absolutely proved that Clark Kent is Superman. Dark Knight Over Metropolis. In fact, Dark Knight Over Metropolis reads much better without them as then we actually get to follow along with Batman as he unravels the mystery.
Upon taking the strange jewelry back to the cave for analysis, the Dark Knight realizes that it is made from kryptonite. Sensing that there is something much bigger at play here, Batman heads to Metropolis to continue the investigation.
Instead, the kryptonite conspiracy becomes a subplot to the much larger battle against Intergang. This of course makes the current boss, Bruno Mannheim nervous and so we see him formulate a plot to abduct a key witness and brainwash them to recant their story.
In these s tales, Superman calls on Batman to battle Intergang, and then entrusts Batman with a Kryptonite ring! Collected from SUPERMAN # This paperback collects the Superman: Dark Knight Over Metropolis storyline and several other stories. This storyline originally was published in three parts in.
Knowing that Cat is in danger, the vigilante known as Gangbuster is hired as her bodyguard but even he is not enough to hold back a mob with the firepower of the New Gods. Even Slam Bradley shows up to lend a hand, but his appearance is never explained nor is he ever heard from again. Ultimately, this is a job for Superman… and Batman, who just so happens to be in town.
The killers that Mannheim contracts, Blindspot, Chiller, and Shockwave were more comical than they were frightening and it made for a pretty unsatisfying final confrontation. However, while the threat itself is quite dull in this story the detective work on display and the interactions between Batman and Superman make up for it. What makes this story shine is the characterization. The conversations that between Superman and Batman who are both suspicious of each other at this point in their careers and seeing them gradually warm up to each other and become comrades is quite enjoyable.
And also, Lois Lane was criminally under-used not only in this story but every chapter in this collection.
The artwork throughout is quite good and I especially liked the way Batman was drawn to look more like shadow than man in some scenes. There are some really beautiful shots of Batman and Superman springing into action and even the quiet moments impressed with the attention to detail with the lighting coming through the blinds as Superman and Batman have a heart-to-heart. I did notice a number of coloring mistakes in the first chapter though, mostly dealing with Batman.
Essentially this collection is a build up to one of the most iconic Batman and Superman moments that has been used and re-used in comics and animated features ever since. It has been difficult for DC to figure out how to maintain the Superman and Batman friendship following the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" story line.
They seem to have found their stride though, by making Batman the detective who can figure out the clues that Superman cannot. Not a big fan of the Kryptonite ring though, but we'll see how it goes. Nov 11, Adrien rated it really liked it Shelves: This was a great time for Superman. Four years after the post- crisis reboot, spearheaded by John Byrne. The first story is written by Byrne and drawn by Arthur Adams, who was at this time verly clearly Byrne influenced in his drawing style. It is, surprisingly the weakest story in the book, and unrelated to the others stories, which build upon each other, as successive issues often do.

After this first, silly, story from Action Comics Annual 1 , in which Supes and Bats team up to rid a small town of it's menacing vampire, you get a story of Supes trying to help a group of astronauts who crash land a space shuttle after some radiation experiments go terribly wrong. Then you get the real meat of the book: Really seminal stuff in the post crisis history - when Superman learns he can trust Batman.
Mar 26, Daniel rated it it was amazing Shelves: Proof that Batman and Superman can meet and not try to kill each other or cause massive amounts of collateral damage. Written shortly after DC's company-wide reboot in , these stories offer some of the earliest meetings between the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight in the new continuity. After a one-off story involving vampires--in which Superman is so concerned about killing that he has to fall back on vampire lore to tell the difference between the actual undead and innocent living people who are simply under the thrall of a vampire instead of just, y'know, snapping a bunch of necks for the hell of it--we move on to the meat of the story involving Intergang's attempts to stop the trial of Morgan Edge. Cat Grant, who is now probably best known for her appearance on Supergirl, features heavily in the plot, as does the still-fresh-and-new romance between Clark Kent and Lois Lane.
While I'm not a fan of some of the clunkier narrative devices that were still being used in comics in the early- to mid-eighties, you can't beat the lighter tone of these stories. Nov 04, Mark Shannon added it. When a woman confronts Clark Kent in a graveyard brandishing a ring made of kryptonite she forces the Man of Steel to confess his secret identity. When the same ring turns up weeks later in a frsf homeless man's possession in Gotham City, Batman traces the man's recent trip to Metropolis.
There the Dark Knight joins forces with Superman to uncover the ring's past and the identity of the cemetery assailant. This was a good story from the '80s featuring a revamped World's Finest when they still have a wary respect for each other.
Both of the heroes have not yet reached their full potential at this point in their careers and I like my heroes full strength. But this is a good story to round out the readers' enjoyment of the characters Nov 08, Dave rated it it was ok. In the mid 's, DC 'rebooted' their heroes.
In this new version, Batman and Superman are no longer 'Best Buds' The 1st story is from , and is a 'stand-alone'. Though they are both in the story, Bats and Supes have only a scene or two together. The main story here is from Batman is looking into a murder, and Superman is looking for the owner of a kryptonite ring, who knows he is really Clark Kent.
It is a nice story, and I enjoyed looking back at it. I sometimes get tired of the Ba In the mid 's, DC 'rebooted' their heroes. And the ending is important in terms of storylines down the line Jun 24, Victor Orozco rated it really liked it. Excellent set of stories. Set some time after the events of the Eradicator storyline.
Its great to have Clark and Superman team up to deal with a few things. Kind of funny that the first story details the World's Finest taking on a Louisiana vampire.
That's right, long before Sookie Stackhouse. Other really cool things involve the final flight of the Excalibur and the death of its crew. Which would lead to something far more twisted But the main story includ Excellent set of stories. But the main story includes a Kryptonite ring and a woman who knew that Clark and Superman were the same person.
It's fun reading these old stories. This group of stories show Superman and Batman working together to solve a few cases along with trying to stop Intergang from going after Cat Grant. Plus, the romance between Lois and Clark. The first story felt more like a Vertigo book; I kept expecting Swamp Thing to show up.
The title story was the part that had my attention; Dr. Henshaw before he was Cyborg-Superman, Batman obtaining the Kryptonite ring, Superman's secret exposed. Oct 22, Emmett Spain rated it really liked it. A treat for Superman fans and Batman completists, but those not raised on comics will find this a non-event.
Apr 24, Kailynn Heath rated it liked it. I miss this type of storytelling in more recent superhero comics. It's not trying to hard to be good, and it's good. Good book not great. Still, nice little crossover story with Superman and Batman. The first story I didn't really enjoy, vampires etc?? The rest was good ok Oct 10, Mike rated it really liked it Shelves: Not a big fan of it.
