At the same time I'm wondering, who is the main character? It felt like the first half of the book focused on Daniel Trokic and then the focused changed to Lisa Kornelius. I don't mind if there are two main characters, but I would personally prefer if focus switched between them throughout the entire book. The chapters are all really short, and that makes the book a quite easy and fast read. I don't mind that, but I sometimes felt the booked skipped to fast from one scene to another. At the beginning of many chapters I wasn't entirely sure who we were following and where we were.

I might give the second book about Trokic and Kornelius a change, but I don't have high expectations! I can clearly see why this book was the winner of the Danish Crime Academy's Debut Award in for the most exciting debut of the year. What a thrill ride this was! Thanks Willow Rose for the "must read" recommendation. I was hooked right from the beginning of the novel. This story has all of the elements that make for a great, thriller read: Suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat, danger, shocking and heinous acts that boggled my mind, gory details that made me cringe but I just co I can clearly see why this book was the winner of the Danish Crime Academy's Debut Award in for the most exciting debut of the year.

Suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat, danger, shocking and heinous acts that boggled my mind, gory details that made me cringe but I just couldn't stop reading, and an artful air of mystery that kept me guessing as to who did the dirty deed. This was my first Wolf novel and, now, I can't wait to go read the other novel, Under A Black Sky, that I one-clicked at the same time as this one! Trokic likes to be a bit of a lone wolf, and sometimes gets into trouble because he doesn't stay in touch with his colleagues.

A young woman has been killed near the edge of a forest, her throat slashed and dried hemlock blossoms left on her chest. Trokic is assigned the case, and he is assisted by Lisa and Jacob, two young detectives. Lots of mysterious possibilities as I love Scandinavian mysteries, and it was fun meeting a new detective, Daniel Trokic, of the Aarhus Denmark Homicide Bureau.

Lots of mysterious possibilities as the case progresses, though about two-thirds of the way through I guessed the killer. As Lisa and Jacob close in on the killer, Trokic is incommunicado, his cell phone out of charge. Will they all sync up in time to save Trokic from running into an ambush? Exciting Was worthy of five stars until the ending. Didn't care for the protagonist, found him completely unlikable unlike his subordinates. As the story is drawing to a close, the protagonist suffers a serious head wound.

But doesn't have to stay at least overnight in the hospital. When confronted by the antagonist, he gets shot yet is able to have a car chase with the killer. Yet the antagonist is shot by a subordinate in the thigh and succumb she to blood loss. And a different subordinate was Exciting Was worthy of five stars until the ending.

And a different subordinate was shot in the chest but would make a complete recovery. Not sure if I will continue with series as I have plenty of books in the to be read. It kept me hooked and you do not see who committed the murders until well into the book. Very atmospheric and well written. I liked the characters and want to read the next 2 books in the series to read more about them. This is the first Inger Wolf book i have read and will definitely be reading more. Detective Daniel Trorick is a gifted Detective, he's also, stubborn and has a difficult upbringing. But he's reasonable although he can be bullheaded.

Lisa getting moved to his department wasn't ideal at first, but they grow on each other. With the help from Jacob and Jasper they bring the case of the gruesome murder of Anna and the disappearance of her boyfriend Christoffer to a close. So many suspects and so much digging is required.

Is it the weather, do you think, that leads to so many grizzly murders in fiction set in Northern Europe? Frankly, it's hard to believe this was a debut novel; it's that good. Wolf presents a refreshing take on the serial killer--yes, I know that's sort of an oxymoron--in that this is not about sexual depravity or the torture of women. I'm so tired of and over that nonsense.

No, this one actually makes sense, in a mad sort of Is it the weather, do you think, that leads to so many grizzly murders in fiction set in Northern Europe? No, this one actually makes sense, in a mad sort of way. The characters are all terrific. They are believable, interesting people. Oh, and as for that mystery--yeah, great plot! And that's all I'll tell you about it. Wolf also thoughtfully raises issues of the ethics and consequences for society of the over-prescription and overuse of antidepressants.

This book is a little outside my usual reading box, but it was offered free and I decided to take a chance. The English translation is very well done. Police inspector Daniel Trokic is an intriguing character with a dark past.

The author holds nothing back as we follow them through this police procedural as they doggedly search for clues in the murder or a young woman who had been out for a jog in the forest. A woman is found naked murdered in the forest. She is Anna Kiehl, an anthropology student and single mother. The police inspector David Troikic, will lead the investigation to discover who killed her.

This novel won the Danish Crime Academy Award. If this was the best novel, I am not interested in learning about the runners-up.

The book is very slow, boring, and absolutely predictable. Halfway through the book, I was tempted to throw it away, but with a lot of effort I continued simply to confirm if my suspicions were true, and of course they were.

I got fooled by the reviews. Not worth your time. Dark September Interesting murder mystery with likeable characters and storyline that the reader can follow fairly well without straining to keep up with the action. Dark September is a pretty good read.

Fast-paced for a mystery, all things considered. It seemed a bit slow, not in regards to the timeline or writing style, but the characters were fairly boring; their personalities and personal conflicts didn't really grab me intensely, but they were tolerable enough. I feel that it's difficult to write a murder mystery without the same type of characters as every other book in the genre, and really takes an extra something to stand out from the crowd. I appre Dark September is a pretty good read. I appreciated that it didn't end with a cliffhanger. In fact, although this is book one of a series, it wraps up nicely as a stand-alone novel.

Trokic seemed pretty cool, even if he does come off as a stiff sometimes. He's a lone wolf type, partly due to the anxiety and depression from some past trauma he's suffered, and partly because the personal aspects of his personality don't tend to fit in well with others.

Here's a quote from Jasper to Trokic that I really loved, "You never take anyone at face value. And that pushes people's buttons, people who are used to being in control. In fact, it seems he pushes people away because he doesn't want to get hurt.

  • Mortality!
  • Children of the Apocalypse (Mace of the Apocalypse #3).
  • Teatrante di vita (Gli emersi poesia) (Italian Edition)?

I find that relatable, even down to the endless nightmares, although mine are not about rabbits. Her area of expertise is IT related tasks, like searching through computers and other devices related to child pornography and pedophilia cases, before recently transferring to homicide.

You'd figure that would set her up as a more analytical type as well, but she is a fairly emotional hot-tempered person, which becomes apparent when she loses her cool over the conversation she has with her boss about the morality of using antidepressants. I found it a bit irritating that she decides to completely change the way she looks, with the help of her 'more fashionable' sister, because she's tired of being a single woman and figured she could garner more male attention that way. Also, the fact that she practically jumps into bed with a coworker, Jasper, and thinks he might be the one.

Girl, you've known this guy for what, a week? The descriptive writing, especially the writing about nature and death, really stood out for me in this book the description of the body they pulled out of the bog in a later chapter was a nice touch of grotesque horror. This cinematic opening paragraph hooked me: The white poisonous plant lay fanned out over the woman's exposed breast.

In the dawning light, dew still sparkled on the thin red-speckled stalks nodding in the light breeze. A nearby brown Irish setter raised his snout from a pile of dead leaves and sniffed at the various forest scents, one of which was unfamiliar. He checked it out cautiously. The naked woman lay in the clearing that formed a natural boundary between the tall beeches and a small dense cluster of evergreens.

She faced the sky with arms and legs spread out on a bed of fallen leaves, ferns, mushrooms, and impatiens that had finished blooming. She might have been daydreaming. If you haven't already assumed this, the homicide case deals with rape, so if this triggers you please be warned. There were no rape scenes, or overly-detailed paragraphs, and when it is mentioned it is mentioned fairly briefly but isn't focused on in an intrusive manner, in my opinion.

From about midway and throughout the book, I was for sure I knew who the killer was. The only reason I decided to rule them out was because of the semen found at the opening crime scene. For a long time, I suspected Jasper because of how charming he was and how quickly Lisa had saddled up with him, to me it seemed ominous and suspicious, anyway, along with a few other connections. The ending was a bit of a surprise, and I loved that you literally have met the killer right at the beginning of the book, which authors tend to not do well, so props to Wolf here.

She tricked the police and she sure as hell tricked me. I thought the strange preservation of bodies was interesting, but it was kind of a let down that the killer's motives randomly turned out to be that of a dissociative psychopath, given that I was half-expecting a crazy corporate scandal. Well, it didn't exactly have me on the edge of my seat. Was it a nice read? Most definitely, and I'm impressed with this being Wolf's first book.

I will continue the Trokic series because Ingrid Wolf's writing was nice enough that I am confident her books will get better with time and experience, plus, the characters may become more interesting as we learn more about them, and as their relationships develop.

Mar 07, Nina rated it it was ok Shelves: We have everything from the brooding, mysterious investigator to the purple-haired young woman who specializes in computers. Throw in a good old-fashioned secret order: I had guessed who the murderer was halfway through and was really just waiting for the police to mess up, get in danger and figure it out for themselves. The author's extremely pour attempt at making this some sort of "socio-realistic" novel as well by adding discussions about what happiness is and how modern society drives us to depression just made for passages you had to skim and skip.

Some random, incredibly handsome young police officer brings up a simplified version of Sartre after visiting a junkie. At least it made for excellent parodies whenever mentioned to my friends or family. I had never heard of the author or the series, but it was one of my Kindle First books, so I had nothing to lose. I'm glad I took a chance on this book.

The last quarter of the book is so exciting I read it all in one sitting. The main characters are pretty well developed, so when the author places them in peril at the climax, you are on the edge of your seat to find out if everyone will make it out OK. I tend to shy away from translated books, but I liked "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", and I had never heard of the author or the series, but it was one of my Kindle First books, so I had nothing to lose.

I tend to shy away from translated books, but I liked "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", and this seemed as if it might be in the same vein. It's not as graphic as that book, but there's still enough edge in terms of sex and violence that you won't mistake it for The Hardy Boys. I found myself several times backing up to make sure I understood what I was reading.

I don't think the ending is predictable, although my wife, who is smarter than I, might disagree. In short, this was a very exciting book! Feb 09, Cudeyo rated it it was ok. Decepcionante, esa es la palabra. La autora salta de un personaje a otro sin llegar a ninguna parte.

May 29, Monica rated it really liked it. God debut indenfor krimi-genren. El fragmento del libro: En cualquier caso, se alegraba de que esa historia ya hubiese terminado. It doesn't even seem to be about the same guy. His name is Trokic in the books but the series are marked as Trokics.

That's really irritating and I've no idea why. It makes no sense at all. It's impossible to figure out which order these books are supposed to be read in as well. You look on some sites and this is book one yet others say book two and the actual content of this story gives you no clue whatsoever. Neither did any of the other characters match up.
