    • It begins with the approach of three men to a castle in which the protagonist's hero is a maid. The three men are believed to be the castle's duke and two of his companions. Once they're admitted inside, though, it seems that they're different. One of these men, or not-men, seduces the maid and the protagonist is born.

    Her mother, afraid that she slept with a Shade, or other apparition, bears her alone and names her Mooncalfe. Mooncalf The Mooncalfe is a short fantasy story, of the Arthurian times. Mooncalfe looks different than normal children and has strange abilities: Her mother, fearing that Mooncalfe's extraordinary beauty will attract the wrong kind of men, raises her in solitude.

    Once Mooncalfe grows up, she goes on a quest to an ancient temple to ask to become like a regular woman in appearance. It is there that she learns the truth about herself. This is a well-written, well-crafted story, with a good deal of magic and mystery in it. Jan 13, Angus rated it really liked it. The Mooncalfe is a novella and the name of the child of Merlin.

    Quick overview because most of you know the tale. Uther wearing a glamour spun by Merlin poses as Duke Gorlois to gain entry to Tintagel castle and bed the Lady Igraine.

    But after that, Uther disappears from the story and it revolves around the girl child of another casualty of the encounter. Yes, Merlin is in the story. What I liked most of all is that the story sticks to the ORIGINAL legend, rather than all the claptrap spinoffs that have surfaced in the last few A well-told tale of the Arthurian legend, told from a different viewpoint. It's well-written with few typos but could have used another pair of eyes. The ending is a nice surprise.

    It's a novelette, but I wish it were longer. Jan 14, Shannan rated it did not like it. It was very well written, I'll admit that. However, I could never really get into the story. I didn't feel like there was very much to the story, and it wasn't just because it was a short story. Overall, this just wasn't the story I expected, nor was it the one I wanted to be told. Good thing it was free.

    I don't do this often, but I felt compelled to mention my disappointment with this story although I only read a few pages. Yet, in the first few pages, there were rapes, lewd innuendo, lusty magic, misbehaving kings, and the story looked to have more of the same. If this sort of thing isn't for you, avoid this story.
