Defining a diner in New York can be tough: These reliable places are sometimes good, sometimes less so, but most of all convenient. Which brings us to the class of these restaurants that are worth paying a special visit — a group of truly great, mostly old-school, worth-going-out-of-your-way diners. In the latest issue of New York, Adam Platt wrote about, and lamented, the great diner die-off. Our favorites that are still kicking, below. Lindenwood Diner Linden Blvd. Lindenwood has plenty of what you expect from a diner: It excels thanks to its specialties, though: Caribbean, Latin, and Southern dishes, including Creole halibut, curry goat with plantains, great and gigantic mofongo.
They serve nice breakfast items and the french toast and pancakes are very tasty. Argh, with the Cheyenne and the Moondance gone there aren't many left There's the Market Diner at 43rd and 11th: Let's note that these are not the best diners with the best diner food. In my mind those would be the Skylight at 34th and 9th in Manhattan and the Bel Aire diner at 21st and Broadway in Astoria , but everyone will have their favorites. They have the food but not the old architecture, which is sadly going extinct. If you spend any time in Williamsburg the Kellogg might be worth a visit.
If you want one of the diners that was in a railroad-style car Diner http: If you're a Seinfeld fan - http: Another vote for Scottys Diner on Lexington! There is the Comfort Diner on 45th between Second and Third. Or Morning Star Cafe on Second between 50th and 51st. Fairly close to the theatre district is the Red Flame Diner on 44th between 5th and 6th Aves. All of your saved places can be found here in My Trips.
Emilio Estefan, Arnold Schwarzenegger in a muscle tank, Alf: I love it but I think its more of a breakfast place than a real diner. Retrieved from " https: Not a hipster place at all, just filling food. I believe you missed one. If you're a Seinfeld fan - http:

I always assumed Billy was referring to the Empire Diner in his hometown of Hicksville, which has been there roughly since the earth cooled. Having lived in Hicksville as a kid, I can confirm.. The Empire Diner is older than most things on earth. I was mortified when the Empire closed… The owners invited me to the closing party. I honestly had no idea it was back in business. I immediately thought of Star Diner at 10th and 18th as well. And is the Empire still a diner at all, what with the upscaleness of its menu?
I went back and forth, but had to concede considering the fare is at least the standard diner menu, if a fancier version, and because it has such a classic exterior. Correct to Pearl Street Diner Information. Diners used to be my hangout of choice, although closer to my home in Brooklyn. The food and service is great, and the prices are fairly moderate for a city diner. I also work near The Terminal and have watched its sad decline to its current state. In fact, before this recent paneling, I stomped around inside a bit to snag some pics. Aside from it being utterly destroyed, someone was living in the kitchen area amongst the strangely left behind kitchen appliances.
Sad, but really, not much food traffic near the West Side without all those businesses there. You missed a great one in Queens — Court Square diner: BTW, this site has some excellent photos of the terminal before it fell apart: What about La Esquina http: Great Blog, that came up on a search, we come across from the UK once or twice a year and spend our first breakfast in the square diner, acclimatizing to the NYC beat before we head off to explore.
But are these the only ones?
Surely there are others. Still serves burgers, pancakes, and grilled cheese. See me youtube video of it. Interesting, I was really shocked to see that the Cheyenne had gone! Bt not for a few years. I came across it around and returned on several other trips to NYC. I thought it was a good sign to see many cabs etc outside. It was unpretentious and civil.
Keep up the good work. The Terminal makes me so sad. It really tried to make a go of it several times. You could eat and watch a movie at your table. It may be useful for others:. How sad that these wonderful buildings are disappearing; it is like erasing part of your history.
They look so snug and comfy too. The Empire was featured in the opening credits of The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd starring Blair Brown and it was such a thrill to this brand new New Yorker to see that iconic spot which was part of my neighborhood on the small screen. Back then our corner of Chelsea had not yet been re gentrified nor populated by the art scene and certainly no one had conceived of the High Line! It was terribly authentic and you dodged drug dealers and hookers to get to that corner for any after hours snack….
I ate at the Terminal Diner a few times back in the 80s when Tribeca and all downtown really was the empty outskirts of the city and there were lots of burned out cars and junk on the side of the West Side Highway and you might get mugged there. The Terminal was probably exactly as you would imagine it, a perfect NYC diner experience. Lyn P here — Just thought I should drop a line to say I always love your blog and how helpful this post was on a conference call I just had discussing scrambling to change diners for a shoot.
Went to the Empire Diner since I was a child and I am now 70!
He is or was passed away now my uncle and was the original diner building company in the area if not in the entire US. The original Diners were truly a trailer, built in one place Bloomfield, NJ then transported whole to its home. His decendants still reside in New Jersey.
Sadly, long gone now. The Imperial Diner on chambers at church was a real diner. It had been right there since the thirties.
Unfortunate renovation in the 80s, but a great place to eat. Countertop service — toast could be too hot to eat. More like 6 pm. Always served burgers fish sandwich, etc.
