Frank Allfrey is an aspiring artist, but unfortunately, his financial supporter an old uncle is against all forms of art and wants his nephew to have nothing to do painting. He eventually sends Frank to California, where he works for some time as a clerk before the company collapses and Frank is left without a job. However, while at the office, he has made friends with a man named Joe Graddy, who offers his assistance and service to Frank, who gladly accepts him.
They eventually decide to try Frank Allfrey is an aspiring artist, but unfortunately, his financial supporter an old uncle is against all forms of art and wants his nephew to have nothing to do painting. They eventually decide to try their hand digging for gold in the great Californian mines.
Long story short, Frank eventually makes an enormous fortune and sails back to England with it. This intriguing story of escaped criminals, gold, aggressive Indians, and much more is worth the read.
