This book has it all: She's drawn into a murder through no fault of her own but of course the small town cops are too dumb to figure out what's really going on. Heroine and the usual cast of quirky secondary characters help her investigate and of course call those same bumbling cops just in time to save her from the murderer. As routine as it gets with so little character development other than the stereotypical emotional Italians and stodgy non-Italians that the characters are literally just names on the page.

All that said I give it 2 stars rather than 1 because the author does hit every cute-cosy convention as per expectations.

As they are heading into town, Gigi notices that Martha's car is starting to swerve and ends up crashing into a tree. Martha dies and the cause is an allergic reaction to peanut product. Gigi is sure that this could finish her business off. Not only will she not get the review she was hoping for, but she was also in line for a contract with food processor would package her products. In looking into how this could have happened and who might have wanted her dead, Gigi finds that Martha had quite a few enemies that would have like to see her out of picture.

But then Martha had been in Al Forno, a restaurant owned by Emilio, a waitress had the misfortune to spill a glass of water on her. Would the possibility of a bad review that could ruin Al Forno be enough of a reason for Emilio to murder.

When she begins to look into who might be the killer, she heads to The Silver Lining who are having a showing for a new crafts-person, as she knows that some of the people she is interested in learning about, will be there. As she about to enter the shop she notices an adorable Westie tied to the parking meter.

She soon learns that Reg used to belong to Martha. Winston Bernhardt is now taking care of Reg and offers him to Gigi, who gladly accepts. Besides, while walking Reg in the evenings she will be able to search for clues. There are a wonderful set of supporting characters in the book, too. Sienna, who a bookstore in town is always there to bounce ideas off. We have Carlo, who is Emilio nephew, who Gigi might think about becoming better friends with. But then, what about Detective Mertz, who may not be such a bad guy even if he is a policeman.

Looking forward to the next book and am looking forward to learning where Gigi's business will go. Of course looking forward to the further adventures of Reg. Not a bad first outing or first book in a series. Not great though either. I suffered through an immediate introduction in the first chapter of almost all the suspects, which made the first third of the book a bit of a bear, trying to remember who was who and keeping them from running together in my head. There was a bit - not a lot - of calorie counting that felt a bit unhealthy to me.

Obviously, calorie counting is part of the protagonists job, but a few times when not doing her job, it's mentioned. Also, her reasons for "investigating" didn't feel realistic to me: The protagonist, Gigi, kept having a running internal dialogue about Carlo, another character, that left me feeling completely confused: I literally could not get a feel for what the author was trying to get across here.

Stuff like that bugs me. There are things I did enjoy: I love the small town the author has created; she has introduced some interesting characters that could play a bigger part in future books.

I like the detective she's introduced here too - although he wasn't around much throughout the story, she dropped enough hints of possible romantic tension that I'd like to read more. I love that the best friend plays a role and owns a bookshop. And I really liked the little twist at the end that had nothing to do with the plot, but left a smile on my face regardless.

The mystery itself was interesting, with lots of suspects who had good reasons for wanting the deceased dead. I liked the final conflict as well, it was a nice twist on the heroine-in-peril. I'll look for the next one and see which direction the series is going in before deciding to follow or not. May 21, Connie N. What a cute book. New-to-me author Peg Cochran writes lightly and entertainingly.

The story was plausible, and I was kept guessing until the very end.

I was close but didn't guess the right murderer. The main characters are friendly and amusing, with just the right amount of curiosity. I was amazed at the tediousness of Gigi's job--starting her own gourmet diet food business. She no sooner finished cooking, packaging, and delivering breakfast to her clients than she had to start on lunch prep. What a tough job that would be to continue--absolutely no down time. I'd definitely be a client, though, all the recipes sounded delicious.

There are also a few recipes included in the back of the book. It did disturb me a little that the cover art shows her dog with its paws on the prep table right next to the food. Disturbing, especially when she makes a point of keeping the kitchen clean when the policeman is there. I look forward to reading the next in the series. Feb 11, Ana rated it really liked it Shelves: When I started reading this book I didn't think I was going to like it.

The writing struck me as wonky and I wasn't warming up to the characters. Midway through the book, though, I started liking them and the mystery was pretty good.

I did not have the murdered on top of my list, and I enjoyed the side stories. Gigi is trying to run a cook-for-you diet meal program. I do not know how she can handle 3 meals a day, with deliveries, but she seems to handle it fine.

The local newspaper reviewer suff When I started reading this book I didn't think I was going to like it. The local newspaper reviewer suffers an allergy attack after eating Gigi's lunch what is a restaurant reviewer doing signing up for a 3 meals a day delivery plan???? But Gigi knows she did not use peanut oil in her lunches, and she's afraid her business will suffer. So she sets off to find the real killer. There's a bit of a romantic triangle, an unexpected pet adoption, and some other plot twists, and I look forward to the next book in the series.

Morning, noon and night she cooks, packs and delivers meals to people who are on her client list. And all goes well, until one dies because she is allergic to the peanut oil pored over her food.

Gigi knows she did not do it, so to save her business, she and her friend Sienna start investigating on their own. She makes 3 meals a day for her clients. With Martha Bernhardt, a restaurant reviewer, as her newest client she just knows her business is going to grow as her clients lose some inches. Gigi know she didn't drizzle any peanut oil anywhere near Martha's meal so she needs to find out who did and fast before more of her clients start dropping like flies instead of dropping the pounds. Dollycas's Thoughts The author has created a wonderful mix of characters in a wonderful setting. Gigi has just enough spice to make her a woman to reckoned with and a heart that will have you rooting for her from the first chapter. Her friend Sienna is a great sounding board and Detective Mertz was really growing me and Gigi too.

The puppy on the cover is a lovable Westie that used to belong to Martha. Gigi wastes no time in agreeing to take in her new four legged friend. As someone who is allergic to nuts this story his me on a personal level. Thankfully I have never had a severe reaction and watch what I eat so have not even had a minor flare up in years. But what a perfect way to commit a murder. Well almost perfect because the culprit does get caught. A great debut for what I know is going to be a great series.

There are even some of Gigi's de-lite-ful recipes to try and some dieting tips too! Apr 30, Vickie rated it really liked it. This is what makes a cozy appealing to me, that the main character is naturally drawn into solving the the mystery. Gigi needs to save her business since people are shying away from joining her clientele as rumor and the media are reporting how the death occurred. This is her livelihood. The premise of this new series is a good one. She moved there upon recommendation by her best friend, Sienna, who owns a book store, The Book Nook. She loves her clients, well almost all of them, and she has large dreams for the future. When Martha Bernhardt dies from an allergic reaction to peanut oil, that Gigi knows she didn't put on her The premise of this new series is a good one.

When Martha Bernhardt dies from an allergic reaction to peanut oil, that Gigi knows she didn't put on her food, well the world seems to crumble down on Gigi. Actually, this was a bit confusing for me as I understood the panic attacks, but couldn't understand the reactions of the characters around her like the Detective, when the attacks occurred, such as in the police station. The diet tips and the recipes are nice extras.

And, for a debut novel, I think this series has promise. Jun 26, Carla Johnson-Hicks rated it really liked it. This is the first in a series and I really enjoyed it. I will definitely look for others in the series. Gigi runs her own Gourmet Diet Meal business after moving to a small upscale Conneticut town after a divorce. One of her clients dies from anaphalctic shock after having peanut oil on her food. Gigi knows she did not ute peanut oil, so assumes someone killed her. The police closed the case as an accidental death, but Gigi will not give up.

This could ruin her business.

She helps people get healthier and feel better about themselves. I really hope that Gigi and Mertz have the opportunity to get to know eachother better, I think that they could be a really great couple if they take the time to give it a chance. I am really glad that everything worked out in the end. Nov 05, Karen B.

Can't wait for the next one to come out. Jul 26, Janessa rated it did not like it. This book was stupidly annoying. She adopts the dog of the murder victim, and mentions him twice. The characters also aren't very interesting, and the speech is very "uppity" and unrealistic. Aug 30, Rebecca rated it it was amazing Shelves: Great first in series!!!!

Jul 11, Jenny Wheeler rated it really liked it. Loved the food references in this bright mystery which has a great Happy Ever After Ending with a bit of a twist. Peg Cochran cooks up a great tale about Gigi, the cook starting over again in a small town who is running a catering business supplying individual meals to people wanting to lose weight.

The plot runs smoothly and altogether the book reads like the work of a "pro" - which of course Peg is with several light and witty series to her credit.

Gigi is a likeable character and there are enough intriguing story lines to keep you guessing. I'm wondering what will happen with the possible romance with the detective? That won't be at all unpleasant! Sep 14, Kellene rated it it was ok Shelves: This was a new author for me, and the beginning of a new series. To be honest, it just wasn't my cup of tea The main characters didn't appeal to me, other than the dog but that's usually the case. I have no clue how Gigi had any time to solve a murder between her meal prep and running all over the place delivering food. I had the killer pegged about half-way through the book but not the motive.

The writing was good even the story didn't appeal to me This was a new author for me, and the beginning of a new series. The writing was good even the story didn't appeal to me, and I might read other things by the author, but doubt seriously if I will continue with this series.
