Well written and researched, these three books cover a vast sweep of critical history with integrity and sympathy. The Physician and Shaman are the most fascinating but A Matter of Choice brings us right into the health dilemmas of modern times with balance and sensitivity. I read the entire trilogy. I found the first book the best followed by the second and the third one the least enjoyable.

Robert Judson Cole, nineteenth-century descendent of the first Robert Cole, travels from his ravaged Scottish homeland, through the operating rooms of antebellum Boston, to the cabins of frontier Illinois. In the wilderness he befriends the starving remnants of the Sauk tribe, who have fled their reservation. In the process, he absorbs their culture and learns native remedies that enrich his classical medical education.

He marries a remarkable settler woman he had saved from illness. The Cole family is drawn into the bloody vortex of the Civil War, and their determination to survive in the midst of wilderness and violence will stay with the reader long after the final page. Favored to be named associate chief of medicine at a Boston hospital, she is married to a surgeon and owns a trophy residence in Cambridge as well as a summer house. But everything melts away. Her gender and her work at an abortion clinic cost her the hospital appointment. Crushed, she goes to her farmhouse in western Massachusetts, thinking to sell it, and finds an unexpected life.

The Devil in London. A Family of the Guild. Of the three books, the second Shaman is the best. The Physician could have been interesting but the author stuffed it full of so much detail that I lost interest less than a fourth of the way through it. I started skipping the tediously descriptive parts and there are many to get the through the rest of it. Shaman is the best of the three books. The settings -- from Boston to the Illin Got the Cole Trilogy titles as a bargain ebook download from Amazon and finally got around to reading them. The settings -- from Boston to the Illinois frontier from the Blackhawk Wars through the end of the Civil War -- were portrayed realistically and the characters of the Cole family descendants and others were largely believable.

Matters Of Choice

The last book, Matters of Choice, is not a grand finale. While I appreciate the author's attempt to bring his saga about generations of Cole family physicians into the modern times, this book sure seemed like a novel in search of a plot. I know I did. The descriptions of the times and places were very detailed and it was easy to put yourself there. I loved the progression of the story. I would highly recommend. Shaman - book two. Again, excellent story line. I did enjoy book one more than the second. Interesting Loved all three books. Interesting time periods with vivid descriptions.

This could stand alone. Matters of choice - book three. I enjoyed this book but not as well as the other two. It was set in modern day and I had enjoyed the previous time periods so much it was a little disappointing to be back in the modern era. I would read it to see the conclusion of the story and I would recommend, but not as fun as the first two. I am posting this review to all of the books as is. I f feel like I have traveled the world with the author.

I would recommend this to Book Club's and anyone who enjoys historical fiction. Very well written, versatile, and out of the ordinary.

Best books that I've enjoyed! The history Behind the stories gives so much insight into the times they were about. The writing is exceptional. May 29, Dave rated it really liked it Shelves: I've now finished all three of these books in ten days. Gordon is a skilled writer and I remained interested throughout. I gave the first book, 'The Physician', a full five stars, and gave the other two each four stars.
