I really hate doormat protagonists who fall in love with abusive assholes. I especially hate novels with the message that the doormat protagonist can change their abuser with the power of luv.
The message of this novel is absolutely horrible. Kimo is deliberately, knowingly, purposefully hurtful. He cheats, he's emotionally abusive, he's verbally abusive, he puts Bobby through all kinds of hell, and that's not acceptable! I'm not just talking about Kimo's behavior be I hate doormat protagonists. I'm not just talking about Kimo's behavior being unacceptable, but also the novel's message. Telling a person in an abusive relationship that they need to love their abuser through all his or her shitty behavior is such a godawful message.
I'm so appalled I don't even know where to start. Instead of being sympathetic, I couldn't help but be disgusted with Bobby's constant forgiveness. I can't say that in strong enough terms. This scene made me sick, and I mean that literally. I had a stomach ache afterwards.
When Bobby runs away, I didn't have any sympathy for him. It was such a self destructive thing to allow, I couldn't respect him. I couldn't respect his continued forgiveness when Kimo was a shit from the very beginning. And Kimo, who is supposedly like a shaman, shows remarkably little insight into his own douchy behavior. There is not enough hate for him. I can't forgive a character who knowingly, let me stress, knowingly hurts their lover as badly as he did. Magic blisters don't cut it. The history, culture, and food of Hawaii were cool. Even though the mcs have insane amounts of sex, sex that doesn't even happen in fantasy porn the boys were screwing like twenty times a day, one right after the other because refractory periods, the need for lube, or just plain soreness doesn't exist in magical Hawaii , the first part of the book was fun.
The sex was a little goofy because it was so unrealistic, but it was a wild ride that I could enjoy. I tired quickly of Kimo's antics, but they were still forgivable early on. When the forced menage and constant cheating by everyone started around the half way point, the book turned sour which was quickly followed by disgust.
If a protagonist is in an abusive relationship, I want them to grow strong enough to get out of it. If abusive relationships didn't happen in real life, I wouldn't care so much about this novel's message. However, there are real world consequences, and for that reason alone, I find the novel's message reprehensible and the author irresponsible. I loved this book. I own not only the ebook but also the audiobook. It is one of my top comfort reads and I listen to or read it at least times a year.
Now, AJ is a friend but he's also one of my favorite authors, so take this review as you wish. I loved the whole premise of the story, and the romance between Bobby and Kimo is so well-written you can feel the anguish of both characters as they try to build their relationship. I'm not going to go into the story because I hate reviews that have I loved this book.
He seduces a married man, Kimo. It doesn't take Kimo long, though, to figure out that he is happiest when he's with his lover, Bobby, and that the goddess Pele, herself, agrees. To ask other readers questions about Phantom Lover , please sign up. She believes V'Aiden to be Oneroi kinda like a being who keeps humens safe in their sleep and the affair begins. Even though Kimo can't seem to get enough of the sex, he humiliates and demeans Bobby during class trying to hide his guilt and shame.
I'm not going to go into the story because I hate reviews that have spoilers. Suffice it to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it and have read many of the other books in the series. My goal is to read them in order next because I've missed some. But I have them all!
In fact, I'm off to go start book number Je le recommande vivement. Oct 11, Christy rated it liked it Shelves: The thought of two male hula dancers is pretty hot. The fact that this first installment in the 'Phantom Lover' series by A. Llewellyn is set in Hawaii and was going to involve sex, betrayal, romance, and magic had me hooked from the start. I've gotten to know this author's writing fairly well recently so I knew I was in for a very good tale.
Bobby, Lopaka, is a native Hawaiian, meaning he was born on the islands and grew up there, but he is half white and half Hawaiian. He is a h The thought of two male hula dancers is pretty hot. He is a hula dancer and has been training and learning since he was seven years old. Now, nineteen years later, he has been picked, along with seven others, to train and tour with Kimo, Hawaii's greatest hula dancer. For Bobby this is a dream come true because he thinks Kimo is the hottest guy around and Bobby wants a piece of that. Kimo is married, though, and straight as an arrow, as far as anyone can tell.
Bobby figures it won't be a hardship to seduce Kimo while they're on location training and his wife is nowhere around. What a seduction it is! Bobby and Kimo are certifiably smoking hot together. Even though Kimo can't seem to get enough of the sex, he humiliates and demeans Bobby during class trying to hide his guilt and shame.
It doesn't take Kimo long, though, to figure out that he is happiest when he's with his lover, Bobby, and that the goddess Pele, herself, agrees. But, Kimo still wars with himself and breaks off any relationship with Bobby when the troupe flies home to Honolulu for their opening night ceremony. Bobby is devastated that Kimo no longer speaks to him and he tries to be patient and wait for Kimo to come back to him.
Kimo comes back to Bobby, his Lopaka, and everything is out in the open. Kimo's wife has her lover, Kimo has his, and everything seems to be fine. There is a lot of drama in this book, not just pertaining to Kimo and Bobby falling in love, but Bobby's best friend and her wife wanting Kimo's sperm so they can have a baby, Kimo wanting to try a threesome with Bobby and his ex, etc.
I'll admit that there were a lot of times that I didn't like Kimo at all. I felt he was using Bobby and that Kimo wasn't having to give anything up for this relationship, whereas Bobby seemed to constantly be giving up pieces of his heart. I liked this story, although I didn't get a good connection with Kimo, I really liked Bobby. The descriptions of the places they were at on the islands were beautiful and I really enjoyed the Hawaiian history that the author wrote of. I am interested in reading the next book to see where Kimo and Bobby end up.
May 01, Rinkyx rated it did not like it. This is more of a rant then a review in a way: This was really good until it got fcuked up and arrggggg so angry! I don't do books that have scenes with multiple partners or having one of the main MC's practically cheating. A pity cuz I did enjoy it till it got to that threesome scene and obvs it should not have happened. I would not have taken him back, even if I agreed with the scene cuz my lover wanted to try something differ, but when you see ur partner really into the other This is more of a rant then a review in a way: I would not have taken him back, even if I agreed with the scene cuz my lover wanted to try something differ, but when you see ur partner really into the other and kinda forgets u, Fcuk that shit, he just crossed the line.
And they broke the threesome rule! Never have someone as the third person someone u know! Course shit went down hill and my feelings for the book was set. Even after some really great scenes and events here and there came up, after I finished the book and the main MCs got a HEA, I still didn't enjoy the book cuz my mood was now in full bitch mood ever since that scene. Oh yes and kimo was wriiten as a douchey, hypocrite, cheating, main character.
I can't stand his type, but some love it so mehhhh. Jul 27, ZK rated it it was ok Shelves: I have to admit I was rather bored reading through almost the whole first quarter of the book then the seck really enthralled me. It's really a shame there just had to be those het menage in the bedroom, no less! I almost abandoned ship because of those. I would've liked it much better without those This was my first book into this particular genre and I was very pleased.

Another of Sherrilyn Kenyon's tortured male leads and despite of being unable to feel any emotions, he began to open up with Erin.
He was sweet, caring and gentle. I absolutely adored him. I was taken aback with his vulnerability. He tried his best to a better man for Erin. In this book, we get to see much of the world of the Dream-Hunters; their rules and their feelings And they sure do have lots of feelings, so much for being unemotional bunch. It was actually sweet.
This is a must read a Dark Hunter die-hard fans. May 01, Thenia rated it liked it Shelves: A short story of a woman meeting the man of her dreams in a nightmare. Not everything is as it seems and Erin will have to finally be true to herself if she wants to survive, and dare to reach for her happily ever after. A nice glimpse into the dream hunter side of the dark-hunterverse.
I'm curious to read more about them later in the series. Previous book reviews Entire Dark-Hunter Universe series: Apr 15, Exina rated it really liked it. The plot is smartly built. The odd, discursive dreams turn into some volatile reality. The human world and the supernatural one exist closely each other. There are interesting twists and turns, nothing is what it seems.
It was exaggerated, and unnecessary. The end is too easy, some kind of reverse Sleeping Beauty, but as a whole, it is a nice novella. It is not essential but it is worth reading it if you want to get a clearer picture about Dream-Hunters. What I like the most in the Dark-Hunter Universe, is that, as in real life, things are not exclusively black or white.
Things not always are what they seem to be, good and evil are not separated clearly. Originally posted on my blog on December 12, View all 3 comments.
Apr 05, B. Love rated it really liked it. I really liked those, it was fun and very different I haven't read the series this is based? Fast read but really worth it.
Sep 18, Tash rated it it was ok Shelves: I read this from SK's Dark Bites: A Short Story Collection. As much as I wanted to rate this higher, I really couldn't. I felt no real connection with Erin. Her role was too She goes from having sleep issues due to the nightmares to forcing herself to stay asleep, just so she could be with her McDreamy V'Aiden. As for him, there were moments I felt really sorry for him. The way he was treated by those in his realm. But I wasn't too broken up about it because it seemed like all he wanted to do with Erin with they were togther was the nasty Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for their HEA.
But I guess I wanted to feel more of a connection with my characters. Aug 15, Diana rated it really liked it Shelves: This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. Jan 31, Kim Shumaker rated it liked it Shelves: I was disappointed in this story. It was the first introduction to the Dream-Hunters and I was left feeling very confused about what they really are. I'm hoping that the next story featuring the Dream-Hunters go in to more det I was disappointed in this story.
I'm hoping that the next story featuring the Dream-Hunters go in to more detail in to how they came to be and where they fit within the Dark-Hunterverse.
Jan 26, Francesca added it. Read this already in Dark Bites. May 10, Amanda rated it liked it Shelves: Since this was a novella the story is pretty short and to the point. In the end I actually liked the story even though it was pretty light on thought. What I mean is that this novella was short enough that all those Phantom Lover is a novella set in the Dark Hunterverse from Sherrilyn Kenyon.
What I mean is that this novella was short enough that all those chapters where the characters would have gradually gotten to know each other and where Erin would have actually given any thought to her actual predicament are cut out. The story just gets down to business.
You know… the usual stuff. After the obligatory happy ending I was left with many practical questions like: Does he have a job? Does he have a last name? He would have had to go to a lot of shady folks to get a human identity from scratch but none of that is brought up. But hey, what am I going to do? As for what I ultimately got out of Phantom Lover there were actually a few things. Much like the differences between the Were-Hunters Arcadian and Katagaria each has their own respective duties.
Dec 07, Natalia Paez rated it really liked it. My rating for this book is 4.
Mar 21, Gemma rated it liked it. I'm not entirely sure what I think of this one I liked it, but at the same time, the different characters were confusing me although that could be because I am reading when I should be sleeping Erin is plagued by nighmares which make her fear going to sleep She believes V'Aiden to be Oneroi kinda like a being who keeps humens safe in their sleep and the affair begins.
Instead of nightmares she kind I'm not entirely sure what I think of this one Instead of nightmares she kinda lives a separate life with him in this dreamland. V'Aiden is in trouble with his people, he isn't supposed to have feelings and emotions but he can't seem to block them out. Their love is tested when V'Aidens sister reveals him as being Stigoi evil nightmare maker and was in fact the dragon that haunted her sleep.
V'Aiden is killed for his actions and sent to hell to be tortured for eternity but Erin realises the love between them was real and wants him back V'Aiden gets kicked out of hell cause hell is for those who cant feel love and he does In the end, he is sleeping beauty and she is the prince who wakes him with true loves kiss The End Aug 12, Nicole Highland rated it it was amazing Shelves: I listened to the audiobook for this, and absolutely loved it.
This was my first time listening to anything from Sherrilyn Kenyon, and it definitely will not be the last. I look forward to listening to more of her audiobooks. I enjoyed the incorporation of Greek mythology into the story. Kenyon also does a fantastic job on sexy scenes.
