This can help connect many students how they must be valiant, but also be humble and kind to others when they are moving to a new place and facing these challenges. Part of an immigrant experience, they often feel scared and lonely, but with this book, we can remind the children to be like Hoa. I was iffy with the ending of the story when the class raised money to help her mother come to America from Vietnam, because I have not heard stories or often about it.
There were not many information about the author, but she did a good job that there were no negative stereotypes, and I related to most of these challenges. But I like the idea that the child was able to impress other children to help. Mar 02, Janine Darragh rated it really liked it. I think the overall story is a great opportunity to give students a better understanding of the hardships people endure when they move to a new country and face the challenges of being an 'outsider.
I have enjoyed reading this book and think it would be a great addition in multi-cultural classrooms, one that can carry many different and important conversations about immigration and ones that can hopefully spark awareness.
I liked how the author incorporated cultural aspects such as the Vietnamese traditional dresses and the gift Ut's mother gave her. It's a great way to introduce children to other culture's traditions and customaries.
The illustrations are also painted with water colors adding a delicate touch to the visuals. Oct 19, Lauren Thompson added it Shelves: Angel Child, Dragon Child is all about a young girl named Ut who comes to America with her father and sister and attends a new school. She struggles with how to dress and a new culture. She is bullied and made fun of for wearing "pajamas" to school. She eventually gets into trouble for fighting with a boy in her class. The two are then sent to the principal's office and she had to tell her story while he wrote it down. The two befriended each other and he wanted to help bring her mom to America.
This is a story that would fall into the genre of realistic fiction. It would be best read to students in kindergarten through third grade. They would be able to relate to the story best. This story provides the opportunity to create a positive discussion on accepting others and helping others. It is a great way to teach empathy. I think this story would really get students thinking about how they would feel if they had to move to a new country and leave their mom or dad behind.
The illustrations are a beautiful depiction of the story and really follows along with the text. With this story, the readers are able to view two different perspectives of different cultures. It shows the perspective of the little boy from America and how he views a new foreign student as well as the perspective of Ut from Vietnam and how she is handling being in a new place. This is a great way for students to be able to see immigration from both a native and foreign perspective.

Angel Child, Dragon Child is a very realistic depiction of what many immigrants feel and go through after getting to America. Most children of immigrant parents were brought to the USA by their families seeking a better life for themselves and their children. Historically not all people are accepting of those that are different.
The author does an awesome job showing how Ut sees herself as an angel child and as a dragon child. Surat, the author, portrays how populations and people can come together to survive life. Angel Child, Dragon Child is the perfect story about accepting differences in others that children and adults should read. The story is realistic and represents a problem that many immigrants deal with. It is not uncommon for immigrants to have difficulty adjusting to life in America.
The illustrations are accurate to the plot of the story and the words that correspond with it as well. On each page, there is at least one Vietnamese word with the definition and pronunciation. The story has a clear problem and is resolved by the end of the story. The solution shows a great situation where people can put aside their differences and just get to know each other.
It illustrates that friendship is not bounded by cultures or races.
At the end of the book, there is an afterword. It gives background on the country of Vietnam and some of the terms that the author used and how it important for the story. The story promotes understanding between cultures especially in a school setting.
The end of the story is touching because the whole school unites to bring Ut's mother over and it symbolizes how students can empathize and show love towards their peers. Mar 31, M. Hudson rated it really liked it. This is a story about a young girl from Vietnam who is alone in the U.

I was allowed to learn something about the Vietnamese culture.
This book is at an advantage with most books, because the reader doesn't usually learn about someone's culture. Books usually just tell a story, and with this book Michele Marie Surat demonstrated both the story and a culture. It was about a Vietnamese girl "Ut" who is attending school in the United States while leaving her mother behind in Vietnam. Along the way Ut makes a new friend who gives her the amazing gift of raising enough money to allow Ut's mother to come home to the United States.
This is a wonderful story, and there was a significant meaning behind it. Michele Marie Surat is a freelance writer and a high school teacher. She was motivated to write Angel Child, Dragon Child when a Vietnamese girl came to the teacher with a photograph of her mother. When she met the real Ut she dedicated this book to her and all her sisters. I liked how the book had a meaning behind it, most readers do not get to learn the meaning behind most books.
