This is partially a testament to how prolific they are, but also does represent my fondness for them. Liu in particular comes to mind whenever someone asks me about favorite authors or for suggestions on what to read.
I also really liked their stories. Plus, I like being able to see the growing expansion of the genre as I discover new gems. I will continue to read as much short fiction as possible in So more print mags are in my future. Hopefully that will happen this month. Glad you liked some of them, anyway, even if none made your top 19 for the whole year! I like those odds. Apex editor Lynne Thomas says that the magazine published 27 original stories and 13 reprints. Of the stories I favorited, 8 of them are originals and 1 is a reprint. Lightspeed published 48 original stories if this list of Hugo-eligible works is anything to go by and I liked 13 of them. By my rough count, Strange Horizons published 32 original stories and I liked 11 of them.

So, if you look at percentages, the magazines with original stories I like best are: Dunno why my data said otherwise. Possibly because I had the Yanez story accidentally marked as for a long time. I digest most of my short fiction as podcasts and am especially fond of both Clarkesworld and LightSpeed. I also like EscapePod as well for short audio fiction. The Wisdom of Ants by Thoraiya Dyer Though this story is pure science fiction, it has a fantasy sensibility that I deeply love.
The rest I thought were just alright or less than average. Thanks for telling us about the problem. Intelligent map-making wasps expand their Empire and attempt to colonize the Bees. I love me some comeuppance. It is true that no one else had ever done anything like it before, to travel at such a distance, and at such speeds, and by such means.
Here again is that thing I like to read about: I love me some comeuppance. There are several layers of complexity here as he folds in colonialism, imperialism, and cultural death while addressing issues of sexism and even rape culture there are no on-screen rapes, though. Very finely crafted story.
A lot of them were over-descriptive and very hard to get through with very little reward for doing so. Perhaps all the other stories are amazing, or at least down on a level I can appreciate. Some really great stories here, some not so much. Without being negative and naming the poorer stories some from inexperienced authors who just haven't found their voice yet here are the highlights: Jul 23, Amy rated it liked it Shelves: I skimmed a few of these, and wasn't caught up. By and large well-curated. Some standouts are sub-par, one or two very sub-par, but this may have been a bad year for speculative fiction. Nonetheless I would encourage the editor to seriously consider whether stories about hipsters meeting vampires truthfully belong in any serious anthology. Nov 11, Chris Kasten rated it it was ok.
Odd mix of stories and styles. I didn't love the majority of them, but yet there were a few that were really great and a couple more that were enjoyable.
