Jan 01, Sadie rated it really liked it Shelves: This was very similar to other VCA novels and a bit predictable, but I still loved it nonetheless. I felt that Melody was a very likable character just like most V.
C heroines in my opinion. I also really liked Cary too and wish their relationship would of gone a bit further but maybe it does in the next books which I still need to read. Basically, this is just another great VCA book: May 18, Lisa rated it really liked it. I remember reading Andrews' novels as a teenager and loving them.
In fact, I would devour the novels and could hardly wait for the next to come out.
Comfort reading at its best. I liked this book quite a bit. There were of course, the tropes of V. Andrews, but there was a hint of satire in this one as well. This was one of the tamer of her books, so beginners might want to start with this one before moving on to her more WTF books.
Andrews' books were often in YA sections of schools but her books are hardly appropriate for that audience- the 90's were a wild time. P I would say that this book is suited more for a younger audience than I would normally say.
While Robert's smile drives the shadows from Laura's heart, she still worries about Cary, whose gloomy moods drift in like the coastal fog. Melody is uncomfortable with Sara's attempts to dress Melody in Laura's old clothes. This is such a good story with all the secrets gradually coming to light and Melody realizing that her parents never told her the truth about who she is. I was surprised, read it mostly to get a look at VC Andrews writing style and walked away wanting to get straight onto the next one. Then her friend Alice finds her and gives her money, and Melody meets her cousin Cary, who adds more information from Olivia and it settles Melody so much that he persuades her to come back to Cape Cod.
I've read mo I liked this book quite a bit. I've read more risque modern YA novels. Also loved the random mention of one of the cities near where I live Pomona. Grim and I had a good laugh about that. Dec 02, Barbara Senteney rated it really liked it. This story has some of the Gothic feel of all VC Andrews books, but I could tell within the first 50 pages it was written by a ghost writer, although my copy is tattered and faded it dates to , 9 years after the great authors death.
Still the writer did a great job with characters and background, it didn't keep me on pins and needles the way the early works did. However it is a good story, so I gave 4 stars. A young teenage girl who lives in a trailerpark close to her Daddy's work in the coalmines. Her father's brother, his wife and two children. L A very good book. Left by her mother with this family she has never met, Melody begins to unravel the secrets of the Logan family, including the realization that her father was not her biological Dad. Between her Uncle and Grandmother who can barely look at her, Melody finds friendly in faces of her cousins, Cary, a handsome senior at her new high school, and May, 10 years old and deaf.
The book is a page turner.
You're continuously wondering what secret Melody will uncover next. The book continues with the second in the series, Heart Song. Jan 24, Darcia Scates rated it it was ok Shelves: Three hundred pages of boredom until you get to the good part. I do admit the last chapters were exciting and impressive However, this story is not a typical VC Andrews book. I am a die hard fan, but I don't think VC Andrews gave enough notes to the ghost writer. When I think of Melody I think of an empty place setting with her name on it.
I was not drawn to her or feel any sympathy towards her. Her mother was also a cardboard character.
Editorial Reviews. From Library Journal. This latest posthumous best seller by the prolific Melody (Logan Family Series Book 1) by [Andrews, V.C.]. Melody later discovers Jacob's coldness is due to an old family feud between Chester and Jacob. Melody learns that the Logans hated Haille and did not want .
I did not see her in my imagination. This was a story wr Three hundred pages of boredom until you get to the good part. This was a story written by someone who did not put enough effort to entice the reader, as Andrews did with her other series, and the late writer Sidney Sheldon did with all of his works.
Andrews' Heaven series, the Ruby series all kept you on your toes; you missed work and sleep to finish the book. In contrast, this book gets on your nerves and you hope it ends. Don't waste your time, I give you permission to not read all of VC Andrews books Anything else will do. View all 4 comments. Jul 07, Kate rated it liked it Shelves: The only really interesting, different thing about this particular series was the fact that it took place in New England, somewhere near Boston. It was interesting to read about the area where I grew up through the eyes of V. I also recall a part where Melody visits a sided house and there are some interesting facts about sided houses something like there are only 16 in the country?
There's anot The only really interesting, different thing about this particular series was the fact that it took place in New England, somewhere near Boston. There's another one in West Townsend, MA. It was just really random to read that a landmark like that is so rare, and I've grown up near such a unique landmark my whole life - so it didn't seem like such a rare thing Jan 05, Patricia Atkinson rated it it was amazing. The story of a young girl who is dropped off by her mother with relatives in cape cod that she had never met. With a promise from her mother that when she is settled she will return for her.
Meeting her grandparents for the first time and discovering secrets of the family that throws her life into turmoil. As melody seeks the true and unbury the lies that she has been told. VC Andrews has always been a favorite of mine since my childhood days. I have read and re-read all of her books, and although I am much older now and find that some of her work is better than others, I still enjoy the twists and turns, strangeness and mystery that continues to captivate my interest.
Sep 23, Brooke Moxley rated it really liked it. This was a good book for the beginning of a series.
There are always things left untold and revelations that keep the book going. Feb 12, Britt rated it really liked it Shelves: Am generally not a fan of Andrews' ghostwriter. This is a story about a girl, not a romance, not a hint of paranormal activity or fantasy I know you are thinking I bought 10 books by VC Andrews on special after a friend gushed about them and I realised that I should expand my library. I should read more widely as I realised that a lot of friends do not share my paranormal passions.
LOL I can not decided what shelf to put them on I will probably create their own shelf! The book starts slowly Establishing the dynamics surrou This is a story about a girl, not a romance, not a hint of paranormal activity or fantasy Establishing the dynamics surrounding Melody and then shattering them Her mother is beautiful but flighty and her father is strong and loving and ever present till an accident at the mine takes him away Haille Melody's mother already has a boyfriend - possibly did before the accident that killed her dad, and they decide to leave Sewell but they go to Cape Cod is where their family comes from and they stop for a visit but Melody is left behind when Haille and Archie go on she is sixteen and abandoned with her father family who seem to harbour ill feelings toward her and her mother and father.
Interesting that this character is so much a part of the book yet she can not interact with anyone - Melody finds the family strange Lots of anger and silences Melody's own family history starts surfacing Her mother calls Melody while travelling to get work as model or actress with Archie and Melody asks why she never told Melody about why they left the family and why they cut her father off.
Her reply is that Melody would not understand view spoiler [ Melody's family Haille was Belinda's daughter Belinda is Olivia's sister and she got pregnant father is never mentioned but the crushing disaproval of society at the time she breaks and is sent to an asylum for insane people but it sounds like she was only addicted to drugs and alcohol She is still alive?? When Haille was born she is adopted by Olivia and Samuel who have Chester and Jacob Haille was out of control and the two boys tried to keep her under wraps, without much success Haille accuses Samuel of molesting her for years and Chester believes her and takes her away.
Chester was in love with her. Chester gets work in a mine in Sewell and they live in a trailer but Melody is a happy child and Haille works at the local beauty salon. She spends a lot of time at a local bar talking to the barman Archie. She rarely eats with Melody, who learns early to look after herself.
Melody spends a lot of time with kindly next door neighbours. The scandal caused a split in the family as Chester sided with Haille, whom he had always loved, leading Jacob and Olivia to disown him. The pair then fled to Sewell where Haille later gave birth to Melody. Melody does not believe her gentle step-grandfather could be guilty of raping his adoptive daughter, and so sets out to discover her true father's identity. It is revealed that Haille's real mother is Olivia's sister Belinda, who has languished in a care home for nearly thirty four years due to severe mental impairment.
This means that Olivia and Samuel are not Melody's grandparents but actually are her great-aunt and great-uncle, while Jacob is her second cousin. This discovery also means that Cary is in fact her third cousin rather than a first cousin and Melody allows her relationship with Cary to blossom into romance. Cary suggests that Melody's father may be a man named Kenneth Childs, who had a close relationship with Haille when they were both teenagers. Kenneth is a reclusive artist and the son of the Judge Nelson Childs, who is a close family friend of the Logans. Kenneth takes an interest in Melody, and spend a great deal of time together, but Kenneth reveals that he is not Melody's father; he is in fact her uncle as his father had an affair with Belinda many years ago, the result of which was Haille.
The revelation impacted deeply on Kenneth, who had been in love with Haille before the truth was revealed- he has been a recluse ever since. Suddenly Melody is shattered by the revelation that her mother has been killed in a car crash in Los Angeles. Judge Childs admits the truth to Melody and welcomes her as his granddaughter but Melody is no closer to discovering her father's identity. She is enjoying a romance with Cary but Uncle Jacob continues to demonstrate his disapproval of her, prompting Melody to consider the possibility of moving with Kenneth, as he is now her uncle and can take guardianship of her.
Olivia forbids her to do so, insisting that this will cause a scandal and fan the flames of gossip and possibly reveal the truth of Nelson's affair with Belinda. Olivia will not allow this to become public knowledge fearing that shame will be heaped upon the Logan family. Melody agrees and instead makes plans to reside at the mansion with Oivia. These plans are shattered when Melody's friend in Sewell, Alice Morgan, sends her a catalogue.
One particular page is folded down, and on the page are photographs of a beautiful model that resembles Haille so closely that Melody believes it to be Haille herself. Perhaps she is suffering from amnesia, or did Haille have a twin no one knew about? Sleeping in Laura's old room, Melody was awash in a sea of grief and confusion, with only her beloved fiddle to comfort her.
Then Cary revealed the truth he'd gleaned about her parents -- a sad shocking story that only puzzled her more. Melody knew nothing of the dark deceptions that would soon surface Melody Logan was as alone as a solitary gull, with only the wild Atlantic wind to lift her spirits When Melody Logan's mother died in a car accident, Melody lost the last shred of family she had ever known.
She was practically a stranger to the Logans, her wealthy relatives on Cape Cod, where she now drifted on a sea of dark secrets. In the eyes of gentle Aunt Sara, Melody was a replacement for her dead daughter, while for Uncle Jacob she was a reminder of the family's shameful past. Only good-hearted Cary seemed to care, and since it was revealed that she and Cary weren't truly cousins, the affection that had always surged between them now crested in thrilling waves. But Melody knew she could never truly echo Cary's loving promises until she discovered her own buried identity.
Despite Grandma Olivia's daggerlike threats, Melody sought out Belinda, a mysterious, half-crazy woman who was her real grandmother. Belinda gave Melody hope -- and a glimmer of the pearls of truth she knew were hidden in the shifting Cape Cod sands. Somehow, someday, the story of her past would be her hard-won treasure, to be savored in a world of sunshine and happiness The third novel in the "New York Times" bestselling Logan family series.
After coming face-to-face with her mother, whom she thought was dead, Melody Logan hopes to unearth the truth about her own past.
