Will is running away from his impending engagement after Beau's death. He winds up the companion of an ill-tempered gent named Alex. Alex has been betrayed by some people closest to him, so his house is in disarray.
While Will cleans up Alex's house, he is also managing to clean the ice from Alex's heart as well. This story flowed really smoothly, there didn't seem to be any major plot gaps or abrupt starts or ends. That was an issue I had with the first one. This one had minor jerky spots the whole spy thing, but it was minor. Regency era is hard to translate well into gay fiction because it was something that simply wasn't done out in the open. This portrayed that rather well.
Everything else in the story was sweet and appropriately paced to where it wasn't too fast or slow, but kept the reader engaged as well. I wished there was a bit more in the physically intimate scenes as far as description and just the overall number. I also wish it was longer so that the scenes aforementioned could have evolved from the epilogue.
We remeet Will on his wedding day and he's not a happy camper. The other characters are as well defined as they are for what they ne Superior Book by Superior Historical Romance Author Victoria Sue appears to have written only two MM historical romances, both in this series. The main conflict here is apparent from the start and the title , as even as their relationship develops, Will is lying to Alex about who he is. His footman and wife, are taking advantage of his drunken situation until Will turns up, and slowly helps Alex heal both physically and mentally. The love they share is beautiful and Noah is one man determined to get his woman at any cost.
Other than that, Innocent Betrayal is a achingly sweet romance between two broken people and will leave you warm and fuzzy, with some tears along the way. Jun 09, Misty rated it it was amazing Shelves: It's a very engaging and well-plotted story, the characterization is excellent, there's a good level of angst, some twits and turns and there are no lapses in pacing which made the book very hard to put down.
This is a story of complicated relationships, the main characters are both damaged and flawed which for me makes it that much more poignant. This novel deals with dark and light, despair and hope. Jun 18, Zeoanne rated it it was amazing. What a wonderful story this was to read. Jun 20, Sam Callaghan rated it it was amazing. I really can not say enough good things about this book. Set in a time when being caught with another man could result in death, gay men needed to be very sure before revealing their true nature. William is being forced into an arranged marriage when a chance escape allows him his freedom. Alex is injured and at deaths door when Will appears.
Together they heal each other, but the path of true love never did run smooth. To many things are set to keep them apart. Oct 04, Fiona Lyle rated it it was amazing. I cried actual physical tears. This book was so full of heart shredding emotions I didn't know if I was going to make it to the end. I'm so in love with Will, he was so sweet and brave and has the biggest heart ever. Jun 24, ButtonsMom rated it it was amazing Shelves: The Innocent Betrayal is the second book in her Innocent series but can be read as a stand-alone.
Rather than go through with the marriage, William runs away and becomes the companion to Alex, who was critically injured in the war.
Alex has always known that he preferred men so he and his wife had an understanding; she never asked questions about what he did when he was gone. After his wife dies Alex blames himself and turns to the bottle, trying to drink himself to death because he no longer cares if he lives or dies. William is truly a compassionate man and he saves Alex from certain death. Just like the first book, this one had my emotions on a rollercoaster.
The writing is wonderful; descriptive and engaging and I was sorry when the story was over. I look forward to reading more books by Victoria Sue. I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review. Jun 28, Bike Book Reviews rated it it was amazing. This book was everything I expected it to be and more! Victoria Sue has outdone herself yet again! William is horrified that his father is forcing him to get married after discovering his darkest secret. That discovery ruined William's life, but hurt another in a much worse and horrifying way, can William live with the guilt? What if he has a chance to start over again w This book was everything I expected it to be and more! What if he has a chance to start over again without the iron hand of his father?
Alex is wounded in body and spirit, after both the war and a tragedy at home leave him not caring what happens to him. All that changes when his new companion takes over and in time gives him a will to live and maybe even enjoy life. Will never thought he would care for someone as he has grown to care for Alex, and he is certain Alex feels the same, until hurt feelings and misunderstandings cause the ultimate betrayal, can Will forgive Alex?
Does he even want to? You will love this story as much as I do, you will be just as shocked as I was by the twists and turns in this story, and if you have made your mind up that you know what the betrayal is, trust me, you have no idea ;! Thanks Victoria, for yet another book that takes us to a place we never want to leave! Sep 08, Bo rated it it was amazing. The first was stunning and original, this one is more stunning, more original, and beautiful to behold.
You will not meet two more carefully defined and deeply conflicted characters as Will and Alex.
Their love story is slow to boil, deep in complexity, and overwhelmingly heart wrenching. The other characters are as well defined as they are for what they ne Superior Book by Superior Historical Romance Author Victoria Sue appears to have written only two MM historical romances, both in this series. The other characters are as well defined as they are for what they need to contribute--friendship, deception, hatred, betrayal, with some kindness thrown in by minor characters.
The plot kicks in at mid-point, which is where is should be because it's a distinct surprise and takes us on a wild whirlwind. No spoilers here but it's reasonable and well handled. More importantly in a novel such as this one, the resolution of a love story is one that just sweeps you away and leaves you smiling and hoping that at least one of the other characters in this book you will know right away to whom I refer needs to be in the next book in this breathtaking series.
Jun 30, Anne Marie Crookes rated it really liked it. This was the story of Will and Alex, who fall in love in early 19th century England. This was not a happy time for anyone, as the war against Napoleon was raging. Alex had worked as a spy for the Crown until he got injured and had to return home. His wife died shortly afterwards trying to get help for Alex when he fell and he is wallowing in guilt, when he meets Will. Will is running away from an arranged marriage and is also feeling guilty that he couldn't save his friend Beau from death.
These This was the story of Will and Alex, who fall in love in early 19th century England. These two men, full of guilt and pain help each other heal through misunderstandings and adventures as they try to stop a spy and save the day. Their friend Gus who should get his own story and other assorted friends come to the rescue when needed and the HEA is well deserved. I received an ARC copy in return for an honest review.

Dec 17, Molly Lolly rated it really liked it. Original review on Molly Lolly Four and a half stars! I really enjoyed this story. I loved getting to see how Will handled the events in the first book. This was a wonderful look at who Will is and what he truly wants out of life. I adored how he and Alex slowly get to know each other and fall for each other. Watching these two dance around each other was such a joy.
The emotions were wonderfully written in this story. I was on the edge of m Original review on Molly Lolly Four and a half stars! I was on the edge of my seat at times and my heart hurt at others.
Alex was such a beautiful character. He was so wrapped up in his pain, it hurt to read at first. But I was amazed at his blossoming by the end of the book. I loved seeing him stand up for himself finally right at the end. I liked the plot with trying to figure out who the traitor is and doing it in time. It was this undercurrent that made you think and look at everyone with an air of distrust. I was shocked by who wound up being the spies and double crossers at the end.
I adored the ending. Seeing how Will extricated himself from London was masterfully plotted. Then he and Alex are so happy together at the end. Gus needs a story though. Everyone has turned their backs on his. Physically Alex is getting better and mentally Will is. Of course their hearts mend and they fall in love. Jun 23, Vfields Don't touch my happy! This book features a character we met in The Innocent Auction. The Innocent had very powerful and had excellent pacing. We have a feisty stubborn heroine who is determined to get away from her older brother's protection and run away to America dressed as a boy where have I read this before and an alpha hero who attracts every female around him, the heroine included.
A silly misunderstanding, that both the heroine and her brother could easily have explained, leads the hero to believe her a nobody when he finds her on his ship. A bit of forced seduction leads them to be found in bed by the heroine's brother who makes them marry. Now I've read my share of feisty heroines and alpha heroes, truth be told I enjoyed quite a few of them. The problem is that after a while, unless there's something original in them, you start to feel like you've read all this before After the shotgun marriage the brother forces the hero to leave to spare the heroine's feelings and, quite predictably, the poor girl is left heartbroken because, quite predictably too, she had already fallen for her husband.
There's a mystery subplot in which an old enemy of the hero tries to get to him through his wife and the hero comes back to protect her that could have been interesting but I had a hard time believing that he could disguise himself so well that he could spend weeks with his wife and she not recognising him. And the way her treated her in the end? Well let's just say that a lot more groveling was needed to convince me So, if you are in the mood for an old school romance that will bring nothing new but will also not be particularly offensive you may try grabbing this one May 09, Melinda rated it really liked it.
Mary Campisi has a place in my readers heart for her strong imagination, well developed story and her men in the books that place their women first about anything else. I loved that Emily is a woman who will not back down and Noah well he just cares for one thing, Emily. Together these two play a game of cat and mouse yet each one place the victor in one another's hand.
