At 86 years old she was still a force to be reckoned with and sharp as a tack. So, what was the cause of impetus that sent her to the run down, old Artemis Hotel? Who was she planning to meet? What promise did she want to keep? Who saw her there and pulled the trigger and landed the fatal shot? The citizens of Roscoe are more than surprised bringing the town to a standstill, their thoughts wondering who or why as author Joe Perrone brings Chief of Police Matt Davis into the thick of the investigation hoping to find the answer. Maggie might have been senior in age but this amazing woman was one of the best trout fly tiers and few in the town came close.
Who was she meeting at this hotel and why did she seem as if she was living in the past talking to someone who was not there? Wearing an old fashioned gown as if she might be attending a wedding, she finds herself within the confines of the ruins of the hotel but cannot process what happened to it. A broken down porch and one fatal shot!
But, there is much more to consider before all of the answers are revealed. Flashing back to the author introduces four young men hoping to go out and make some type of a fortune but not in a legal way. Hoping to commit the perfect robbery and not get caught these four learn that sometimes crime does not pay. But, one young man harbors his feelings and reminds readers that he is only participating so that he and his love can be together. Within this town there are several factions that are hoping to create a stir to allow wind power into this town providing as they say income for its residents.
But, as one real estate man named Tony enlightens readers as to the damage, dangers and detriments of a wind power, the two sides collide, the police have to control tempers and the Mayor seems to be on the wrong side. Within this intricate plot the author reveals information or short biographies of each of the men that were involved in the heist to rob the payroll from a shoe factory.
Two elderly guards were driving the armored truck and these four young men thought they could overtake them and get the money. Who was the mystery person in the prologue that apologizes for killing her? Will they ever be mended? Will anyone come forward to help him? Describing the dangers of putting a penny in a fuse box, how fast a fire can ignite and what happens when a town is unprepared for the worst, Broken Promises will not disappoint readers. Would you want wind turbines in your town? What if you would get paid by the company and would make a profit?
But, what if these turbines would hurt the farm community, the air quality and much more?
Can anyone stop what has already been set in motion? With his team of officers and neighbors Matt sets off on a hunt for a killer, the resources to stop the corporations, deal with finding out who was involved with the robbery and then hoping to solve the case before it goes cold.
Each link to the missing pieces leads back to the past and when Matt finds out the truth what happens will surprise the reader. What really happened and why? When the Mayor decides to take stand and does not back down what will be the final verdict about the wind turbines? Can the little town of Roscoe show the big corporations that they stand just as tall? Where are all the men who were involved in the robbery? What is their final fate?

Joe Perrone Jr is a skilled writer, and Gary Kohler did a wonderful job of bringing all the different characters alive.

Friendships that are trusted, corruption that runs rather high, the past that winds up punishing some in the present and one woman whose memory will always live on. Matt Davies is one such character: In this novel, Matt has to get to the bottom of the tragic murder of a much-loved and well-respected elderly lady. A slightly confused elderly lady, who finds herself in the wrong place at the very wrong time.
Perrone once again pulls off not only combining first and third povs, but present and past tenses. As with Twice Bitten by this author, all loose ends are neatly tied up.

Broken Promises - Review by Martha A. As he moves forward, he trips, and suddenly there is a flash of light and a loud crack like a tree being struck by lightning. Maggie feels a dull thud, then a burning pain in the center of her chest; and in just seconds, nothing. She never hears the words the man screams, his voice filled with anguish, "Oh, my God! What have I done? Maggie McFarland was 86 years old. She was dressed in a textured lavender cotton dress with pearl buttons down the front and a high collar trimmed in white lace. The dress falls just above her satin-finish shoes with stacked heels and laces, all dyed in matching lavender.
The dress was tailored to her perfect figure seventy years ago for a very special occasion. Her destination - The Artemis Hotel. Matt Davis is the chief of police of Roscoe, NY. When a call comes in from Nellie, Maggie's granddaughter, saying that she is missing, it doesn't take Matt and his team long to find Maggie's 86 year old body at the Artemis, which was nothing but ruins and had been since its burning in Who would murder a sweet elderly lady like Maggie?
The only thing Matt has to go on is a shell casing found in the rubble. The name Broken Promises fits this book perfectly. The promises, made years earlier, were broken by both Maggie and her Beloved. Matt Davis' problem is that he will never solve the murder until he knows exactly what the promises were and who they were made to.
This was a book I read late into the night. Author Joe Perrone took you into two stories, one of the past and one of the present, as he led you to the ending. I will say that I was just a little surprised when I found out who actually killed Maggie. I will also say that to me the ending was beautiful in a sad way. I love this character - Matt Davis - and I want to read more about him as well as his wife. Here is hoping that the stories will keep coming. Jun 14, Trista Borgwardt rated it it was amazing. I must say this was a fun and engaging read. I really loved the authors humor that is portrayed throughout the novel especially by the main character, Matt. I found this to be an easy to read, thought provoking, mystery novel. It is quite comical at times, but serious when it needs to be.
Once I started it, I did not want to put it down.
