Bearstone

The two characters change as the boy begins to understand and accept the responsibilities of manhood, and the man takes on the unfamiliar role of mentor. By the end of the book, the two have bonded in a reciprocal relationship, having learned to trust, love, and respect each other. The theme stresses the idea that facing troubles, instead of avoiding them, makes people stronger. Like the requirements of wilderness survival, the author is spare with details, giving readers only enough to clarify the characters' inner thoughts. The book is well written and interesting to read for upper elementary and middle school audiences.

This is a wonderful book for many ages. Bearstone is absolutely wonderful, refreshing, metaphoric and magical. The quality of Will Hobbs' characters and their sensitivities are extremely well written. I do not feel anyone I am in my sixties gets too old for a wonderful story about growing up.

Library Binding Verified Purchase. She enjoyed it so much she couldn't stop talking about it an urged me to read it.

The students tend to enjoy it until the book begins talking about mining.

They do not really get the concept, and the book doesn't describe it in vivid detail. Other than that, the characters are likable and they change throughout the story, so it allows for multiple references to character traits and dynamic characters. Also, it is about a Native American teenager, so it helps meet standards dealing with multicultural literature.

To me it's pretty boring until the end where you understand what's going on. So it doesn't make much sense until the end. I read this back in fourth grade really good book.

They spend a couple days in the mine, and when they don't get a thing, Cloyd asks if he can go exploring. He goes to climb the pyramid and on the way back he sees a bear. He thinks it's a brown bear, but soon learns that there is no such thing. A bear hunter named Rusty hears of this encounter with the bear and decides to go after it, realizing it is really a grizzly bear. Cloyd has to try to stop him from killing the bear. If you are wondering what happens next, you will have to read the book on your own.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. I really like adventure books, and this author does a great job of making every event very clear. He does a great job of explaining the characters indirectly through other characters. This is known as indirect characterization.

You learn a lot about Cloyd from Walter talking and vice versa. I could actually visualize the actions in this book as they happened.

One of the most important things this book shows is that some things are best kept a secret. This book provides a great theme with a great hook that keeps you wanting to read more. Your feelings are always changing when this book is being read. The mood changes a lot. For example, when Cloyd and Walter are arguing in the beginning, you get a mad feeling, and when the bear is seen, you feel a bit frightened. I would definitely recommend this book to any guy who likes action and adventure books. Without a doubt, this is one of the best books I have ever read. I would give it five stars because I thought it was awesome.

The only bad thing about this book is the beginning is kind of slow. All the action is at the end.

Overall, this is a great book. The pain, revenge, and love in this book showed the ups and downs of being a young troubled teen. I really like where you see Cloyd transition from boy and almost to man in this tale. The pain and loneliness feels real as you read along in the book. The native America culture in this book is very interesting as it plays out, though I really wish there was more of it.

Overall it was a very good book to see the change you can make in life, and also the suffering you can overcome. Thank you Will Hobbs for a good book about a chance to change. The protagonist, a troubled thirteen year old Ute Indian, is sent to live with a grieving widowed elderly man who at heart is a miner but who has farmed for the last forty years of his life. It doesn't seem like this novel would hold much appeal for middle school boys because the challenges of a displaced Native Indian boy may be difficult to understand.

However, there is plenty of action. What appealed most to me was the sensitive handling and honoring of d This is a unique bildungsroman novel. What appealed most to me was the sensitive handling and honoring of different cultures. Despite the differences in age and backgrounds, gentleness, patience and love prevailed.

There were characters and events that I would like to have seen expanded, yet this is a good read for preteens. As my husband says, "Any book with a bear in it is a good book! I like that the main character had indian something around that This kid isn't doing well with his family and so he gets sent to a man who owns a farm and wants to put it back together again, fix it up. It was pretty cool to read about the man and the boy bonding.

Definitely a coming of age book. I think I might see if the 2nd one has anything to offer because I liked the premise but I'm not so impress Another "Meh" book. I think I might see if the 2nd one has anything to offer because I liked the premise but I'm not so impressed with this one. The author did a good job of entertwining real emotion though. Not quite a tearjerker though. So I'll see what else the author has to offer but don't expect a hayday from this book. Take it for what it is and move on.

Another book that brought me through a power outage. I didn't notice before now but I've read 2 other books by Mr. One of which I loved. His stories are SO varied and different. If you didn't like this one as much as you thought you wanted to check out his other stuff. This might just not be for you, but he's a good writer. Crossing the Wire was one of my favorites.
