JC Maxwell always delivers. He sets clear and concise goals and plans. This is definitely a book to keep around to read again and again. I do wish he would talk more about execution of a few things, but that's in another book he has. While there is no doubt that the book is good and that Maxwell is a well rounded professional, his most important contribution to my personal growth continues to be The degree Leader.

May 31, Stuart rated it liked it. A good book for quick self-reflection. I could have read it in a day or an hour! It's a very straightforward, simple self-help style book. I'm usually not a fan of self-help as a genre, but this was easy and solid enough to warrant the read.
As one professor said of Maxwell, much of his work is a 'mile wide, inch deep. Instead of a deep, probing analysis of the A good book for quick self-reflection. Instead of a deep, probing analysis of the human psyche, Maxwell gives good, general things to think about, and skims their surfaces, inviting the reader to pride their depths in his or her own life.
I think it's a grand approach. The only small critique I'd have for the book is the seemingly small emphasis it put on Jesus Himself. There were a couple points in the book that made me squirm. The most representative example of those points is when he speaks of commitment, and his commitment to building a new church building.
That meant terminating some people who were very popular. Firing and adding church staff members is not how the church is suppose to operate.
I understand that the book is not written to an exclusively Christian audience, but a church is not a business. Staff members are not under an executive pastor like they would be under a CEO. The pastor cannot just fire and hire at will. There are many similar instances where capitalist business ethics are applied to life under the guise of biblical ones. The book, however, is still a general one and not an exclusively Christian one, so these, while unsettling, are completely understandable.
Overall, a good book. The conclusion gives a great way to apply the 'Daily Dozen' and move forward. If you want a light, self-help book to get started, especially if you're in business, read this one. Mar 08, Angel rated it really liked it Shelves: Originally published in angelroman. The book is divided into chapters for each topic He shares personal experiences and then presents different approaches to the topic.
If you read the description, you can see this is a book derived from a bigger one called Today Matters, it has only pages, so you can actually read it in one sitting as the statement says, but I would rather advice you to read carefully through each chapter and take your time to digest its content, one chapter at a time. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. Jun 22, Joe Cassada rated it liked it. This is the first book by John Maxwell that I've finished.
I've heard a lot about his works on leadership, so I recently bought some at a used book store and borrowed this particular one from the library. Other writers in the same genre seem to take up much l This is the first book by John Maxwell that I've finished. Other writers in the same genre seem to take up much less shelf space compared to the numbers of volumes that bear Maxwell's name. Admittedly, I am skeptical about self-help gurus and leadership experts. I mean, unless a man has led an army or governed a nation or founded a multi-billion dollar company, just what exactly does he think makes him a great leader - great enough to write not one, not two, but a multitude of books about leadership?
So, this book's title seems to promise to show us how we can all make the most of our day - carpe diem and all like that. But it's really less about time management and more about self-leadership. I kind of liked the book, actually. It was filled with quite a few punchy quotes, which I always enjoy albeit many seemed oddly disconnected from their surrounding context. The book smacks a bit of random thinking that somehow found it's way into 12 brief chapters - or a sideshow in a circus of platitudes, but you should be able to sift through the cotton candy and find a peanut worth chewing on.
So, I'm glad to have read it, but it didn't change my life or anything, and there are plenty of better books in this genre. Best to borrow it from the library and save your clams for a different volume at the bookstore. Aug 20, Kara Lane rated it really liked it. Page 1 of 1 Start over Page 1 of 1. Make Today Count is a short book to read and I like that there isn't a bunch of filler fluff.
