Apr 01, Concise Reader rated it liked it. Childs opens with about pages surveying approaches to BT and introducing his own. He then spends about pages going through all the books of the Bible.
The last half of the book is devoted to examining Biblical themes. Each chapter mostly follows the pattern of quick introduction, survey of the OT, survey of the NT, Biblical and dogmatic theological reflection. As hard as it may be to believe for a page book This book could also be titled Survey of Modern Critical Biblical Scholarship. As hard as it may be to believe for a page book, I think brevity is its biggest weakness. Childs spends most of his time listing and evaluating other scholar's arguments. With the space left, he is only able to present his conclusions.
It's a bit unexpected to be reading a rather large book where most of the work appears to have been done elsewhere. Here are some quotes that I think summarize Childs' approach to BT: Biblical Theology attempts to hear the different voices in relation to the divine reality to which they point in such diverse ways Both testaments bear testimony to the one Lord, in different ways, at different times, to different people, and yet both understood and rightly heard in the light of the living Lord himself, the perfect reflection of the glory of God.
It is not that for the Christian the New Testament 'corrects' the Old Testament, but rather that Jesus Christ, God's true man, who is testified to in both testaments, is the ultimate criterion of truth for both testaments.
His reality is the test of the biblical witness, while conversely the reality is encountered only through the witness. Upon reading this book, I have definitely come away with a greater appreciation for diversity within the Biblical witness. It absolutely changes the way I will approach Biblical Theology. At the same time, I think this work raised a lot of questions without answering them. I am still not sure how to understand Childs' view of the relationship between scripture and the church.

Old-Testament scholars would therefore find it hard to agree with a point of view such as the following Rahner He refuses to follow the common pattern in Christian thought of identifying biblical theology with the New Testament's interest in the Old.
