    • Darnay is confident and engaged, and his affections for Lucie are apparently returned. Even when facing death, he managed to appear cool and gentlemanly in the courtroom.

    Carton, on the other hand, is a 'disappointed drudge', as he calls himself. He's cynical about everything and generally unhappy with life. He knows he should change but doesn't know how.
