Early on I used a brig of war to sack towns, it's a pretty good ship for sea battles as well. As for the ship of the line, it's an awesome but rare ship.
I have not even tried to acquire one as of yet. All of the other ship stats are identical to the other versions I have played, so the ship of the line should be the best overall ship in the game.
