The horrors from Indian mutineers and Britishers are tragic. And the lack of command from the last Mughal despite no fault of his lead to this catastrophe. History at its best, though a dark chapter in Indian history.
A very detailed look at the events of , in and around what happened in Delhi. Reading it, whatever other feelings come to mind like the revenge of the british, the destruction of the heritage of Delhi , for me the overwhelming feeling is that of remorse, of a lost opportunity.
In-spite of the huge numerical superiority of the Sepoy's, it's indeed tragic that the outcome was not different solely due to lack of command, no foresight to gather intelligence, behaving like a nineteenth century version of a suicide bomber etc. And in-spite of whatever feelings Dalrymple has for Zafar, to me he is as spineless and lazy a head as ever was. Seeing the mood of the mob when they asked him for the royal blessings, it's but natural that he should have got the idea that the Sepoy's will treat him no better than the brutish oops the british.
He should have said no there itself. He had nothing to lose, if he feared for his life at the hand of the rebel's, he should have known that once the war was lost, his chances will be bleak anyways. And once he had taken the decision, he should have made more sincere efforts to assume the role of a central leader.
Allowing the Sepoy's to loot the city unchallenged, watching bombings from the Red Fort without doing a single constructive thing, it's but natural what fate had in store for him. To me the the saddest part is that civilians were caught in the crossfire and the parts of Delhi that was lost forever. Last Mughal is one of the great historical factual compilation ever created by someone thanks to Sir William Dalrymple this work will last and guide us for ages. The history is very well depicted in the form of a story William is a great storyteller.
