Of course no work of art--or movie or play or book or CD--can really accomplish that these days.
If it could, it would have to come wrapped in amnesia. But the retrospective exhibition of the work of Alberto Giacometti at the Museum of Modern Art and the show of new sculpture by Richard Serra at the Gagosian Gallery in Chelsea are testimonies to the poetic stubbornness of, if not the entire human race, at least admirable parts of it. Giacometti came to Paris from Switzerland in the mids and moved into a small studio in which, except for sojourns home, he would work for the rest of his life.
Like practically every other great 20th-century artist, Giacometti made his way through a couple of dominant styles before finding his way to originality. At first, in the s, he bought into a semi-abstract primitivism: Then, as World War II ended, he began to create his trademark long, tall and striding figures. A pessimist--one of those glass-half-empty people--would see an archetypal Giacometti sculpture for example, "Standing Woman," as a tenuous, barely salient figure painfully subject to the horrific pressures of life.
The sculpture seems to stand for the onset of war, the ravages of the Holocaust, the Damoclean atomic age and the general loss of faith that concluded the first half of the 20th century.
Or so goes Jean-Paul Sartre's view of Giacometti's work the philosopher was a friend of the artist , which is still the predominant interpretation of it. But seen in the context of the subsequent 50 years of world history, Giacometti's sculptures-beautifully installed on two floors, as only a deft, rich institution like MoMA can manage--are also, to invoke a cliche, beacons of hope. The figures, in their mottled surfaces and dancelike flickers of light upon them, and in their mysteriously delicate facial features, seem to defy--rather than submit to--the emptiness around them. Yes, their existences are provisional all of ours are , but they're also quite beautiful, in the way only an artist who's looked at the worst the world has to offer and knows that humanity can do better, can make them.
The show is up through Jan. At first glance, Richard Serra, who was born in San Francisco in and lives just a few blocks from the World Trade Center, would seem an unlikely candidate to carry on for Giacometti. Orders Wish list Track my order s.

This book is very readable for busy mothers or those who are not parents themselves, yet have little hearts entrusted to them being written in short, thought-provoking sections.
The examples, poems, excerpts, and Scriptures in this book have rekindled my vision and encouraged me to press on again and again; I highly recommend it to every person who works with or raises little souls.
