Did not enjoy this and it was so different from the first book that I loved. This book is filled with suspense, villainy and treachery. The characters are well developed and the story is fast-paced. Lady Angelique Drummagan is half French and half Scot and she has a very poor opinion of men because her mother taught her that they can never be faithful. However, her father has passed away and she is his actual heir because they hold a title that can pass through the female line as well as the male. Sir Lachlan MacGrath has served his king well and the king wants to reward him appropriately.
The king knows that Angelique will be unable to lead the clan because she is female and French - not to mention that there is a male relative who has every intention of usurping the clan Lairdship for himself. So, the king orders Lachlan and Angelique to wed. The action starts from there and goes through to the end of the book. You'll enjoy watching Lachlan and Angelique grow to care for one another and defeat the bad guys at the same time! This is the one book in the series I wasn't sure I wanted to bother reading.
Lachlan, AKA "The Seducer of the Highlands," was presented as such a ladies' man to the point he had two illegitimate sons in the village by two different women, one could only wonder how many others he had strewn about the countryside. To Lachlan's credit he claimed and supported both sons and was determined to have a relationship with them but had no intentions to settle down and marry for many years - after all he wasn't the Chief of the MacGrath Clan and had no need to marry.
While on a mission to England on behalf of his brother, Alasdair MacGrath, Lachlan finds himself having the run of King James' court and "The Seducer of the Highlands" soon finds himself involved with the lovely ladies. What he doesn't count on is being mistakenly accused of compromising the lovely Lady Angelique Drummagan, ward of the King. It seems she is quite the spitfire and the King wants her married and out of his way so he gives her a choice of three men, including Lachlan - none of whom she desires to marry.
But, she has to marry someone so she chooses Lachlan which results in Lachlan actually becoming an Earl and the possessor of Draughton Castle, Angelique's inheritance. This story is actually quite humorous in some respects. Lachlan's good friends Dirk and Rebbie are continually by his side and Rebbie's teasing nearly drives Lachlan up the wall. Having never had to actually chase the ladies - no, it seems they have continually chased him, Lachlan doesn't quite get Angelique who wants nothing to do with him.
When she requires that he have his "tarse" inspected for disease before she will allow him to bed her, Lachlan is so determined to have her that he finds a physican and submits himself to a humiliating experience. Rebbie finds out about the exam and continues his fun at Lachlan's expense. I enjoy these parts. In time, it seems that Lady Angelique has some strong reasons to fear the act of marriage and someone is indeed set on killing her and taking their revenge. When Lachlan takes Angelique to Draughton Castle, will he be accepted as the rightful ruler?
Thankfully he has Dirk and Rebbie to watch his back. Actually, Lachlan turned out so much better than I thought he would. He is kind to Angelique, gentle and persuasive and eventually determined to become a man that she will accept as a husband. At some point, he has some internal struggles and his pride about his ability to lead and protect comes under his own scrutiny. But of course, he rises from the ashes and brings it all together.
I have read all of them and I loved Lachlan's will to change and Angelique's refusal to be just another member of his harem. This story was just so gosh darned fun! I loved Lachlan in the previous "episode" He loves ALL women and simply feels they're put on earth just for him to enjoy. He's a loveable rascal in the first sense of the word. But he's ready for a change in his life - - a new life of sorts He needs a "sense of purpose" and he feels a need to settle down; so he welcomes marriage.
His Betrothed is more of a wasp than a butterfly, but Lachlan welcomes the challenge of subduing his new Bride, and seducing her. Lady Angelique Drummagan, Countess of Draughon is the only child and heir of her deceased parents. She wants a weak husband Someone who will allow her to run her own Estates and leave her the hell alone! She vows hers will be a marriage in name only. She's a hell-cat and a real spitfire. Besides that, she is aware of Lachlans whore-man reputation and is disgusted with him.
Angelique has no real say in the matter oh the King "goes through the motions" of giving her a choice of husband, but it's all for show. I found this story to be fun and delightful with womanizer Lachlan meeting his match with a woman who doesn't want him. This is "a first" for him. And he's married to her!
Surprisingly he takes his marriage vows seriously. Of course he's very attracted to his new Bride His confusion at her refusal to respond to his charm is a crack up. He's a spoiled, mischievious little boy in a mans body. I just loved Angeliques' character as well. She's strong, stubborn, feisty and full of pluck. She has a temper! She begins to realize the more she get's to know him that he's sincere in his desire to remain faithful to her - - that his womanizing days are over. She slowly begins to trust him. Simply hysterical dialogue at times. It was well developed and this Author puts a lot of attention to detail.

Maggie has stopped to water her horse and rest. She hears horses and hides and then hears more coming from the other side. Lachlan's group has met up and is skirmishing with others. The others soon leave as they know they are beat. Malcolm, his younger brother is hurt and Maggie rushes out to help him without any thought of danger to herself. This is no lad! It doesn't take long before the others know also but what bothers Lachlan is that she won't tell him who she is, where she is from. He knows she is running but has no idea why. Since he already has an issue with trusting women, this doesn't help. There is an attraction growing between them.

Her mother only cared about getting love from a husband that was incapable of loving a woman. Lachlan tries to find every reason not to care about her but nothing will free them until the threat that waits for them both show their face! I enjoyed this book. Lachlan was a good man, he cared about his people and their welfare, he felt so betrayed by his ex-betrothed that trust was impossible.
Maggie saw that he was caring of others but felt she couldn't trust him. He knew she would never make it at a convent. I was in the mood to escape and that is exactly what I did in this romance set in the historical Scottish Highlands. Maggie is running from a brutal life she sees no other escape from.
Maggie and Lachlan, plus his family and clan, were all characters that were immediately likable and endearing. She was bold and practical, not afraid to get down in the mud or go toe-to-toe with the alpha clan leader. She had little reason to trust but Lachlan cornered the market on distrust and suspicion.
He was a warrior despite his warming feelings for her, and it was not hard to picture him in the thick of battle with a kilt and claymore. Actually, it was quite pleasant to think of that! Surrounded by political intrigue and danger from a few different corners, how this duo managed to connect despite the secrets they both kept was a testament to true love.

From her authentic details, intriguing storyline, and interesting characters, who have just enough Scottish brogue to make any lass swoon, she has me wanting to know more about each and every character. I decided to break my review down into two categories to help clarify facts vs. Right from the start, Laird Lachlan and Maggie dance around each other and try to deny their instant attraction. He has so much baggage from a manipulative ex-fiance he refuses to ever trust a woman or his heart again. Each move he makes will be about protecting his people. By refusing to reveal her true identity, he assumes she is hiding a secret that could lead to clan war or may even be a spy sent by his greatest enemy, Conall.
He ultimately decides to just use her for bedsport, then take her wherever she wants to go once he is bored with her. Margaret Murray is definitely on the run. Yes, she does have a connection to Conall, but it is an unwanted one. Well, not if she can get to a nunnery first! After Lachlan mistakenly almost kills her, he reluctantly takes her to his castle. She knows if she reveals Conall as her betrothed, Lachlan will immediately take her back to her father to avoid any possible clan conflict.
He often admitted he would be tossing her aside once he was bored with her. How gracious of him to be the one to volunteer to despoil her virtue! After the truth came off, he got off with a simple apology, folks. That also did not sit well with me. Maggie had little self-respect for herself, as well. At least, she finally did try to leave Lachlan after thinking he had been with another woman. After all, it is called romance for a reason. I look forward to reading this author again, but hope she will give us a more deserving couple who will stop at nothing until they get their HEA.

She runs into Lachlan, who is the complete opposite of man she has ever met. He had so many strong character traits that were likely due to the loving home he was brought up in.
His most endearing quality was a heart for those who couldn't fight for themselves and his one major flaw was some major trust issues he had been burned in the past. Maggie hid her identity from Lachlan for more than halfway through the book and while that is something that typically annoys me it worked with their storyline. I typically like a little more heat in a Highland romance but it was still wonderful and I hope the follow up story is just as riveting. Aug 13, Ann Fanni Ann rated it it was amazing. He wanted-no, needed to see those blue eyes filled with pleasure, her head tilting back as she accepted his body into hers. I can see the book in it after reading, I can guess is in Scotland, the title is pertinent to the book, the red on the grass backdrop is beautiful. This book had a great plot.
In fact, there are a few sub-plots going on with some twists. I love the concept of a woman rebelling against the outdated idea of arranged marriage. I love all the characters. Maggie, the kick-ass heroine that ran away from home dressed as a boy and knows how to ride and work the bow. Lachlan the huge, alpha warrior that is tempted by the girl but is hung up on the past. The secondary characters are also amazing. I love the romance, the couple's chemistry was instantaneous and undeniable.
The lovemaking is beautiful! With good descriptions, creativity, and real enough. It was a hard to put down book. I have ended wanting more. I'm really looking forward to read I guess Lachlan's sister love story. It's not a book with a lot of fresh new ideas, but it's masterfully crafted that you don't miss the great originality. Fearing that they will return her to her fate, she refuses to tell them who she is, which is a problem for their leader, Lachlan. Lachlan falls for her; conflicts arise. My Thoughts- This story began with a bang and hooked me immediately. I did identify with Maggie, which could be why I took her mistreatment to heart.
