Not great, and I rate it 1. She actually showed some sense of feistiness, but I didn't see that anywhere in the pages into the book. Feb 25, Miss Jenny rated it really liked it. This review originally appeared on my website: Miss Jenny's Classroom I borrowed this book from the local library - not because I thought I wouldn't like it but because I had a hard time finding it to buy. I wanted to like this book. I liked The Peony Lantern by the same author. I can't say I loved this book, not even liked The main issue I have with this novel is that the first half is so long and so tedious with the descriptions.
When the kidnapping scene finally appeared towa This review originally appeared on my website: When the kidnapping scene finally appeared towards the end of the novel I suddenly realised I had forgotten all about that at the beginning. Any guy just loved Claudia I like a good romance in a story but this was just ridiculous.
At the very least the blonde-haired brother of her friend "liking" her could have been written out and that scene replaced with someone else. Much like the first half of the book. It did pick up pace after the sister was murdered Speaking of the end I mean, it's the end the story was always going to have but More attention should have been on character development and less on descriptive paragraphs telling me about Rome. At least this is one area the author has improved on with her second novel.
Such a great, un-put-downable, quality read!! This story keeps you on the edge of your seat with twists and turns, deceit, betrayal and mystery, with fantastic reference to Roman history and mythology.. NJ had the same reaction!!! Roman politics and history was also very interesting. This book is easy to read. An engaging mystery with an unguessable twist. Sep 11, Chantelle rated it it was amazing. Such an amazing author and book.

I didn't think it was at the start, but I was already hooked because Claudia protag was sassy as hell and very spirited. She was sooooo enjoyable to read. I honestly was shocked that her and Marcus became a thing. I was so sure that Marcus hated her. Their love story is cliche as cliche Ancient love stories can be; but I still loved it???

She was raving about it because of how accurate everything was. And I am pleased too, as the big history head I am. That was very impressive.
You've written a lovely novel. It only has a fraction of a star taken off because I'm unsure if I'd read it again. And is this a stand alone? Sep 24, Kirsti rated it liked it.
I was interested in the time period, the customs and the plot. What I didn't care for, which was a great pity, was Claudia herself! I didn't like her passive nature, her accepting of death.
She was just such a blank slate of a character for me, and she didn't really change or grow through this book. Really, she should have. She is on the cusp of marriage, at fifteen. Obviously different times, so considered mature enough for marriage. She should have gone through something at least, but instead I was interested in the time period, the customs and the plot.
She should have gone through something at least, but instead has the oh so obvious male lead declare his love for her by the end. I guess I didn't like the rounding out of the mystery either, I don't think Sabine as a character explained her reasoning enough. Interesting time period, but essentially a slightly flat story and heroine, which was a shame. I did enjoy parts of it however, and the writing and language is solid. Quick read too, when I finally got into it.
It's the getting in part that's hard! Oct 22, Clare Cannon rated it liked it Shelves: A simple, sentimental young adult historical romance set in Ancient Rome. In spite of the 'attractive girl at the centre of a love triangle' premise, the story offers brief but fairly balanced insights to Roman cultural and social issues such as slavery, the importance of reading, and whether politics can be used unselfishly to further social justice. The protagonist is good at heart, though she admits a weakness for being loved and admired and compared to a goddess. She has two astoundingly good looking young men vying for her affection, and she manages to overlook the one who is only concerned with money and position and choose the one with more noble aspirations. Aug 17, Annie rated it it was amazing. Yet another great, un-put-downable, quality read!! Amazing historical fiction set in Ancient Rome and brings to light a time when women had little to no rights, a time when girls as young as 15 were married by arrangement and used as pawns to advance their new husband's social, economic or political status..

Aug 16, NJ rated it it was amazing. Great plot, fast pace story telling. There's a huge twist which I did not see coming. I love how the book weaves history into the plot making the reader feels as if they are in Claudia's shoes and going to the bath is an everyday thing! Roman politics was also very interesting.
Highly recommended for those that loves stories with "who do I choose? Book is easy to read if you want an engaging story for a rainy day. Aug 27, purplepixie13 rated it it was amazing. It is an awesome book! With mystery, romance and history, 'The Raven's Wing' is a must read for almost all teenage girls, I think even some boys would enjoy it. It follows through with ancient roman customs and describing almost exactly what it was like for young girls in that time frame and showing how hard it is to choose between you family and someone you love.
Aug 19, Anjalika rated it really liked it. The book was mesmerizingly beautiful. The plot took many unexpected turns but in the end it was very very sweet. I wanted to know more about the lives ahead of them. The ending was so so sweet and pretty. I just love the feeling it gave me. I wanted to be Claudia just so I could experience the ending. The raven has highly glossed plumage showing iridescent greens, blues, and purples. Sometimes the feathers have an oily or wet sheen. Crows also have feathers with iridescent purple and blue, but with less sheen than the raven. Ravens are uncommon in populated urban areas. If you see a "really big crow" in the city, the chances are good that it really is a crow and not a raven. Ravens have wedge-shaped tails and crows have fan-shaped tails view drawing. Ravens are longer necked in flight than crows.
The larger bill of the raven can be seen in flight, but it is less apparent than the long neck. Raven wings are shaped differently than are crow wings, with longer primaries "fingers" with more slotting between them. Ravens have pointed wings, while crows have a more blunt and splayed wing tip. A raven's wing sometimes makes a prominent "swish, swish" sound, while a crow's wingbeat is usually silient.
Ravens soar more than crows. If you see a "crow" soaring for more than a few seconds, take another look - it might be a raven. Common Ravens can do a somersault in flight and even fly upside down. The most familiar call of a raven is a deep, reverberating croaking or "gronk-gronk. Common ravens have a well-developed ruff of feathers on the throat, which are called 'hackles' while the feathers on the throat of a crow are smooth. The common raven makes a variety of calls including these sounds: The normal crow call is a loud caw or awk. The call is often vocalized in a short series - "caw caw caw.
