Her writing style was very annoying at the beginning of the book but then it got better, and a lot of the conversations I found to be cheesy. Add to that, there was supposed to be more conversations. I thought there was more unnecessary talk of war than it was supposed to be and less conversations than it was supposed to be.
And when there were conversations, they seemed too cheerful, cheesy and too sentimental for me, more than they were supposed too. I hated Belle's choices when it came to Etienne at first and I was furious, and then I hated jimmy. But now, I like Etienne better especially at the end of the book and now I don't hate them so much. And I expected that Etienne would follow her to New Zealand hide spoiler ] There is one thing that bugged me the most.
I couldn't help but compare this book to 'The Great Gatsby'. The promise was set in the period of time before the great Gatsby was written and even though the American accent is considered the trash of the english language, still The Great Gatsby is more posh. Get what I mean? In my opinion, every character in the promise didn't speak the way people of that time spoke.
At the beginning of the book it was closer to their way of speech than in later parts and that removed a lot of the credibility in this book. There is something that really baffled me. Etienne at the end of the book said 'subconsciously'. Sure at the time it had been a few years that subconscious was discovered and accepted in the scientific community but it wasn't long enough for people to accept it and use it in their speech so easily, just another point I thought I had to make.
I still liked it though and it hooked me up. It was quick, comfy and entertaining. Dec 03, Louise Graham rated it it was amazing. This book picks straight up where Belle ended. All the characters we loved are still there and we read more of how life for Belle has flourished and how happy she is. Her past life comes back and stirs up all sorts of memories and new problems for Belle and those around her. Nothing is ever as simple as it seems.
Relationships are stretched to the limit and war really changes things that she used to hold so dear. Packed full of e This book picks straight up where Belle ended. Packed full of emotion, fabulous descriptive and detailed writing particularly around the war. My heart went out as I read about what the men on the front line went through, leaving nothing to your imagination as you can almost hear the bombs and smell the fear of the soldiers. Very strong characters, not just in Belle but we are also introduced to some new people and some gorgeous friendships develop.
Once again, Lesley Pearse has produced a powerful story that drags the reader in from page one and doesn't let up the pace right up until the end. There is something that really baffled me. Belle has had a colourful life, although only still in her early twenties, she has seen and done things that many women of her era will never dream of. I really enjoyed this book. I had been put off this author by continual comparison to Jodi Picoult who was fine to start with, but now always seems to write with 'a cause' in mind , and will definitely read more of her work. Amazon Web Services Goodreads Shopbop. Uma mulher com garra que apenas queria descobrir o amor e ser feliz.
Just when you think nothing can get any worse, there is something new to face. This book had me gripped, crying in places and a falling in love with a certain someone all over again!!
Another amazing read and I am so delighted to feature it as my first Book of the Month for So I got this book as a gift from my friend long time ago and I realised later on while reading that it is actually a sequel to 'Belle'. Didn't affect me very much to be honest, there were just few things that I had to look them up to have a background about what happened in the first book. It is such an emotional story that was set during WW1, and had many life changing event for some characters.
She's such a strong and determinant person. It's my first Lesley Pearse book, so enjoyable and interesting to read! The second book of this series was really good, had romance, wartime story. Belle believes she has her dream life but her past returns to haunt her.
This was the second book I read from Lesley Pearse. She is a good story teller. Sep 21, Euphemia rated it did not like it. I don't have much to say. Just that I hated the book and every single character that didn't seem to be plausible in the least. I got through the daunting task of finishing the novel, after putting it aside for a while, because Lesley Pearse is one of my favourite authors. But this was a big letdown This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. Demorei imenso tempo a ganhar coragem para escrever.
A Promessa de Lesley Pearse lavou-me o espirito.
I'm pretty sure that this must be one of the most epic World War 1 romance series ever written.
As frustrating as it was that Belle cheated on her husband that one night in France there's a huge back story to that scene, it wasn't frivolous or gratuitous It's such a truly beautiful, realistic, gripping, tragic I'm pretty sure that this must be one of the most epic World War 1 romance series ever written. It's such a truly beautiful, realistic, gripping, tragic but hope filled story that it had me in tears of both joy and sadness. Crucially, the narration was perfect - flawless, such a relief as the series deserves nothing less.
I've loaded book 3 onto Audible already! So happy to have found Lesley Pearse's books. Aug 21, K. Lowe rated it it was amazing. I read survivor first and I was so intrigued by the story that I was interested in reading Belle's story. I have laughed and cried with the whole story.

This was the sequel to Belle the story went on much to my delight as I wanted to find out more about what happened to belle, along with this it was very interesting to read more about the war and what went on when Belle decided to join as an ambulance driver, the story had my emotions all over the place , I would defiantly recommend belle then read the promise.

There is no formula to her books or easily defined genre. Whether cri Lesley Pearse is one of the UK's best-loved novelists with fans across the globe and sales of over 2 million copies of her books to date. Whether crime as in 'Till We Meet Again', historical adventure like 'Never Look Back', or the passionately emotive 'Trust Me', based on the true-life scandal of British child migrants sent to Australia in the post war period, she engages the reader completely.
Truth is often stranger than fiction and Lesley's life has been as packed with drama as her books. She was three when her mother died under tragic circumstances. Her father was away at sea and it was only when a neighbour saw Lesley and her brother playing outside without coats on that suspicion was aroused - their mother had been dead for some time.
With her father in the Royal Marines, Lesley and her older brother spent three years in grim orphanages before her father remarried - a veritable dragon of an ex army nurse - and Lesley and her older brother were brought home again, to be joined by two other children who were later adopted by her father and stepmother, and a continuing stream of foster children. The impact of constant change and uncertainty in Lesley's early years is reflected in one of the recurring themes in her books: It was an extraordinary childhood and in all her books, Lesley has skilfully married the pain and unhappiness of her early experiences with a unique gift for storytelling.
