One Woman's Battle for Africa's Most Sacred Animal, conveys an astounding odyssey that restores faith in humanity's capacity to see, feel and put the pieces together to ensure a compassionate future for all biodiversity, including ourselves.
This journal-like memoir details Tucker's life transformation including the numerous adventures and various miracles occurring before and after she accepted her role as protector of the beautiful snowy-white lion known as Marah, the Lion Queen. Amidst her personal tales, Tucker offers an important message about the white lions and why the genetic lineage must be protected. As the founder of the Global White Lions Protection Trust, she is well-qualified to speak on their behalf.
The reality of the author's experience will in itself serve as evidence for her unusual point of view. The book's guiding spiritual principles, though unorthodox, will serve to educate anyone interested in the conservation of endangered species. Through understanding the White Lion we will understand ourselves and our great role in the chain of being. Mar 17, Rachel Meyers rated it liked it Shelves: I don't consider myself a conservationist, but it makes me sad when animals are mistreated. As stewards of the earth, humans need to do a better job. Saying that, I probably would have never picked this book off of the shelf, but it was chosen as a book group selection.
A lot of the people in the group liked the book, and I did too for the first few chapters. I loved the symbolism of lions and the fact that there's people out there working to save them. However, I found the book to be very one-si I don't consider myself a conservationist, but it makes me sad when animals are mistreated. However, I found the book to be very one-sided and the author to be very superstitious - and it got old reading about it chapter after chapter. Just wasn't what I love to read. There was some swearing in it and a couple semi-adult scenes, so not really suitable for teens.
I do really admire Linda for the life she's chosen which is dedicated to saving the white lions. But, I'll be glad to move on to another book. Apr 06, Cassie rated it did not like it.
It seems more like a fantasy novel than an actual memoir. I barely made it past the first fifty pages which I read out of boredom during slow shifts at work. The author sounds slightly crazy if she believes in all that she is writing about. While white lions are indeed special animals, having that sort of connection with animals and believing that she can communicate with them and that she is their mother is borderline absurd. I apologize, but I was not impressed, only concerned.
Dec 20, Colleen Mulrooney rated it really liked it. This was a hard book to read. The author's harrowing account of trying to save Marah, a White Lion, and her three cubs from the atrocities of the canned hunting industry made me feel ill. On the upside, there are amazing, compassionate and brilliant people who worked tirelessly to save these rare lions.

A mixture of African shamanism and conservation set in the beautiful Timbivati; with the spotlight on canned lion hunting, and how this barbaric practice has been allowed to continue unchecked, while money pours into the pockets of people who exploit animals for money.
