It's not a bad book and is historically i The writing here is not great, in my opinion, but the story and history of the book raises it a bit. It's not a bad book and is historically interesting. If you are looking for a good Philip Jose Farmer read then pass this one up, it's merely his translation of a early 's story.
If you just want a nice quick easy adventure read the it's recommended. Since posting this, I've been made aware that Brian Stableford has in fact translated the Rosny original along with two other of the author's works, in the Black Coat Press collection The Mysterious Force. Instead, we get mutated humans, great apes, animals, and plant life in a setting that becomes increasingly more dangerous and unfamiliar the deeper into the heart of it Ironcastle travels. Characterization-wise, the book is classic pulp and classic Farmer. Towards the end of the novel, I found myself wondering what a team-up between Muriel, Jane, Dejah Thoris, and Patricia Savage would look like.
Muriel could stand equal to those more well-known women, without a doubt. Pacing-wise, the novel never really slows down. Farmer keeps things moving, and works the character-building moments into the action.
And throughout most of the journey, the world-building is fantastic. Rider Haggard , the deep world-building, the strong female characters.

Well worth seeking out in a used bookstore. Philip Jose Farmer helps to translate a french jungle adventure novel from Fun, suspenseful, with some clever in jokes, some truly creepy villains and a really cool finale. Lots of the kind of adventure you'd expect from a early 20th century jungle adventure.

Ironcastle is the usual 'great white hunter with a cool name' and the side kicks and damsels aren't as annoying as they can be in say, some of the Tarzan books.
