Against overwhelming odds, they struggle to over come their adversities, and hardships, with a little help from a friend. What readers have said: I loved this book, it is just the type of book I like to read, very exciting, I did not want to put it down. I had to get up early the next morning and was sleepy, so I went to bed early and thought I would just read a few pages before I went to sleep.

The religious questions seem to be an agenda for the author's point of view. Little romance began to build during the story. It seems one of the author's favorite words is escarpment, as he over uses it. A good clean book. The narration was slow and artificial sounding.
Nov 06, Judi Chesshir rated it it was amazing. I really enjoyed this suspenseful story. I was hooked from the start. I enjoyed the survival techniques that the two had to endure, the two different points of view on how to look at their situation, and how questions are answered in the storyline about parts of the Bible that many people today still wonder about. This is an interesting storyline that you will enjoy reading and talking about to your friends and family.
I hope the next step for this book is for it to be made into a TV show or mov I really enjoyed this suspenseful story. I hope the next step for this book is for it to be made into a TV show or movie. What a wonderful way to spread God's message! Mar 10, Linda rated it really liked it.
I loved this book and couldn't put it down. Its a exciting story of the personal struggle of two plane crash survivors who come from completely different walks in life. Its a spiritual jouney and transformation.

The "dying newspaper" subplot rang totally true, as did the greasy hide-the-evidence story about how the Catholic church decides that old crimes belong to God, not to law enforcement. Even though arcs in the trilogy of Gruley's novels taking the job at a dying newspaper, Gus's relationship with Darlene seem resolved, I liked the book well enough to go back and see what came before.
Jul 30, Christine rated it really liked it. What a delightful book! I am already attached to the characters from Bryan's first two books That said, I find Bryan's writing engaging as he manages to sidestep the formulaic approach that traps some authors with sequels. The story line pulled me in, took me along on twists and turns and happily landed me at the end wanting more. I've already written friends recommending this book and it has been added to my gift giving list! Again, the standards of hockey, myste What a delightful book!
Again, the standards of hockey, mystery, the cast of characters and Northern Michigan provide a common backdrop but the story is original! Aug 30, Renee Rasak keogh rated it really liked it. Rather than recap the book, I am just going to tell my feelings about all three of the Starvation Lake mysteries.
I found the characters realistic and very relatable. I loved all three mysteries and hope there is another book in the near future. I have never seen a hockey game in my life but felt swept up in the action every time one was described in the novel. Jan 19, Sara rated it really liked it Shelves: Enjoyed this book, at least partially for the familiarity of the Northern Michigan surroundings!
There is even a mention of the Hideaway Bar! The underlying story of the mysterious disappearance of a nun is inspired by the true story of Sister Mary Janice in in Isadore, Michigan-see Mardi Link's excellent book Isadore's Secret. This book is a complex tale with twists and turns that include hockey, a cult of born again Christians and long ago female friends. Jul 17, Michael rated it it was amazing. Each of these three books is fantastic. I can't recommend them enough, although I'd recommend waiting to start each one until you've got little else to do with your time, because they're impossible to put down.
Can't wait for Gruley's next one. Jun 16, Peg rated it really liked it. Jul 03, Carol rated it liked it. Mysterious break-ins are plaguing the small town of Starvation Lake. While elderly residents enjoy their weekly bingo night at St. Worry turns into panic when a break-in escalates to murder. Suddenly, Gus Carpenter, editor of the Pine County Pilot, is forced to investigate the most difficult story of his life. Suffering from worsening dementia and under the influence of sleeping pills, Bea remembers little of the break-in.
With the help of Luke Whistler, a former Detroit Free Press reporter who came north looking for slower days and some old-fashioned newspaper work, Gus sets out to uncover the truth behind the murder. What Did I Think? One reason for the 3 star rating is that this is not an edge-of-your-seat thriller. I have to admit that it is suspenseful It will diffidently appeal to those that like something a little more than a cozy mystery but not so much on the gritty side.
I read Starvation Lake years ago and enjoyed being re-introduced to Gus Carpenter and the people of this rural Michigan community. Gus is a savvy reporter and is involved in reporting on the latest break ins in the community. One such break-in results in the death of his mother's best friend at her home. The story covers a lot about the community's past and the Catholic church in the area and the story of a missing nun. Of course hockey is every present with the beloved River Rats in a fight to I read Starvation Lake years ago and enjoyed being re-introduced to Gus Carpenter and the people of this rural Michigan community.
Of course hockey is every present with the beloved River Rats in a fight to get to the state finals! May 22, Laraine rated it really liked it. This is the third book in Gruley's Starvation Lake mysteries. I thought it was a very good read. Gus, editor of the local Pine County Pilot newspaper is disturbed by the recent "Bingo night breakins" targetting older women while they are playing Bingo. When his Mother is hit by the burglar, unfortunately her best friend, who'd been staying with her, was killed. That leads Gus on a journey to discover what really was behind these events and it led him to murder and a cover up.
Apr 08, Barbara rated it really liked it. I really enjoyed this whole series and think that Skeleton Box was very well done. Gruley is a fine writer and his characters are rich and interesting, and sensitively drawn. The plot was complex without being convoluted and the threads all wove together well for a satisfying and authentic conclusion. Feb 16, Jennifer rated it liked it. I had not read any others in the series, so I was a bit lost as to the characters, but this did not detract from the overall enjoyment. A bit too convoluted with multiple things going on at the same time which is why I did not go for 4 stars.
The author pulled it all together at the end. Jan 13, Denise rated it it was amazing. Great author of books set in Michigan. Sep 24, Debbie rated it really liked it.
Glad that I had this book to read on this very hot day Up North. I liked this one the best of the trilogy. Jul 23, Shelley rated it really liked it. I especially enjoyed that this book is set pretty much locally for me, plus references the little Detroit suburb I grew up in. This book was really hard to read. It reads dry, slow and draggy. May 28, Kari Anderson rated it really liked it. Someone is breaking into homes in Starvation Lake. At first nothing was taken, and no one was hurt. The bandit was dubbed the Bingo Night Burglar.
Everyone is a little on edge, not sure who is a target and why, but everyone gets scared when the burglary becomes a murder at one home. Gus is the chief of the local paper. Plus, she was the mother of Gus Someone is breaking into homes in Starvation Lake.
While the investigation begins to find a murderer, the prime suspects come from a religious group that has set up camp in town, but there is so much more that will come from this investigation than what the town plans for. History from decades back comes back to the present, with a possibly scandalous priest, a vanished nun and ties to the man accused of her disappearance. There were parts of this book that I absolutely loved and other parts that I just skimmed over no offense Bryan. Throughout the murder and burglary investigation, a small town hockey team is vying for a state title.
Hockey has never been a big thing in my life. I just wanted to get done with those parts of the book and get back to the juicy parts. And those juicy parts were the ones I loved. I have never been extremely religious and used to cringe when I saw there were religious ties in books. I have a relationship with God that I am comfortable with and that is all I need.
I am fine with that. What interested me about this book, and some others that I have chosen to read during my bloggy duration, was with a possible scandal in the church. Granted, you want to believe that religious folk would not be committing crimes like these, but it happens and it intrigues me. And as much as that aspect of the book pulled at me, I love books with deep dark secrets.
In Starvation Lake, there has been a secret gnawing at the insides of a few select town folk for decades. We always hear that the truth will set you free, but as in this book, that may not be the case.
I always love seeing how secrets play out in books. Sometimes you have them and wish you would have told them because it comes back to bite you. Other times, you tell them and everything crumbles around you. I do give credit to Bryan for keeping a little piece of scandal a secret until the very end. I normally like to pat myself on the back for figuring these puppies out and part of this book, I nailed it, but I was so focused that I completely missed the other shocker. I liked to consider myself a novel sleuth, so kudos to you Bryan!
I like the Starvation Lake area. I am always a fan of small towns that have a little water, much like my hometown growing up and where I currently live, in a small town bordering the Ohio River.

I feel like I can relate with Starvation Lake a bit and although the name kind of gives me the creeps and seems a bit dark, I have to say I kind of like the town. This is the 3rd book in the Starvation Lake series. When Gracie McBride, the wild girl who had left town eighteen years earlier, is found dead in an apparent suicide shortly after her homecoming, it sends shockwaves through her native Starvation Lake. Yet with all the bad blood between Gus and Gracie over the years, Gus would rather deal with other problems.
A series of mysterious break-ins is plaguing the small town of Starvation Lake. Oddly, the intruders take nothing, despite evidence that they rifle through personal files.
Worry turns to panic when a break-in leads to the death of a beloved citizen. Phyllis Bontrager is found dead in the home of her best friend, Bea Carpenter, mother of Gus Carpenter. Bea, suffering from worsening dementia and under the influence of sleeping pills, remembers little of the break-in. Her son, editor of the local newspaper, must pursue a terrible story: Gruley writes elegiacally about small town America, but his deepest love is for its newspaper.
