What he was able to infer and intuit about Gnosticism from the relatively meager written sources that were available at the turn of the twentieth century, decades before the manuscripts of the Nag Hammadi library were discovered, is nothing short of amazing. A Theosophist and a spiritual universalist, Mead surveys not only his chosen subject of Gnosticism, but also places it within the broad panorama of Christian origins and other branches of Christianity that were emerging in the first centuries of the Christian era.
Every possible spiritual movement within early Christianity that had any impact on Gnosticism and Gnostic ideas is thoroughly examined by Mead. Mead is also very candid and honest about the spiritual value, or lack thereof, of various teachers and movements within Hellenistic Judaism and early Christianity, and is not afraid to call them as he sees them, even if his pronouncements run counter to public opinion, and ruffle quite a few feathers.
If you really want to get a good overview of Christian origins that is broad, universal and panoramic in scope, yet filled with penetrating depth of insight, this book is essential reading, and I highly recommend it. Yet, this book is not real light or easy reading; not only is Mead's subject matter, Gnosticism, not the easiest to understand, but also his quaint Victorian language may take some getting used to.
The main reason why I am giving this book, as I received it, only a four star rating is that the publishers, Forgotten Books, either forgot how to bind a book properly, or never learned how in the first place! Within about a week of receiving it, the book started to break apart, and pages started to come loose. But if your best friend is a book binder, no problem! One person found this helpful. Satisfied Customer Top Contributor: Classic reprint of the more esoteric side of spirituality as opposed to religion and dogma.
