Luckily for me, there is a second volume awaiting me, as well as his currently published series, Battlefields. Sep 18, Robert rated it really liked it Shelves: Some of these stories stood out as better than the others but as a whole they really are quite good.

The fact that the authors used mostly facts to build their stories really helps give them some weight. And the artwork is really good as well. I would love to read the second volume and will be searching to see if I can turn it up anywhere close by. I highly recommend this one for fans of graphic art and war stories. By the way note that all of the stories in this volume are WWII tales. Jul 15, Stephen Theaker rated it liked it Shelves: I remember, back in the days when letters pages in comics weren't quite so rare, Garth Ennis asking for help in completing his collection of Commando and the like: David Lloyd's artwork is stunning in the last of them.

Dec 23, Travis rated it really liked it Shelves: Really great collection of World War 2 comic stories. Almost any one would make a great movie. Being war stories, don't always expect a happy ending, but they are some of the best stuff that Ennis has written. Nov 21, Mike Montesa rated it it was amazing Shelves: The war stories in this anthology by Garth Ennis are a far cry from the cigar-chomping heroics of Sgt.

I particularly liked the opener "Johann's Tiger".

War Stories, Volume 1

There is nothing groundbreaking here. Simple genre storytelling, told in classic comics style with truly excellent art and crisp writing. There is a bit of pulp and a good deal of historical accuracy. Looking forward to Vol. True stories from a variety of wars. Character driven simple straight forward art - I love David Lloyd's style - fluid blacks and shadowing Some the EC comic endings were ok but still not disappointed - lovely stuff just what I like in a simple read.

Feb 12, Anthony rated it it was amazing. Good, but not Ennis-y enough. Except for the story about Easy Company. That one is all Garth. May 11, Jacob Quinn rated it it was amazing.

It spawned a sequel, For a Few Troubles More, a broad Belfast-based comedy featuring two supporting characters from Troubled Souls, Dougie and Ivor, who would later get their own American comics series, Dicks, from Caliber in , and several follow-ups from Avatar.

Another series for Crisis was True Faith, a religious satire inspired by his schooldays, this time drawn by Warren Pleece. Ennis shortly after began to write for Crisis' parent publication, AD. He quickly graduated on to the title's flagship character, Judge Dredd, taking over from original creator John Wagner for a period of several years. Ennis' first work on an American comic came in when he took over DC Comics's horror title Hellblazer, which he wrote until , and for which he currently holds the title for most issues written. Steve Dillon became the regular artist during the second half of Ennis's run.
