Yet 'pleasure' may not be the most accurate word to use, for the story of Lorenzaccio is also tragic. The early situational laughs - which I actually found quite funny - are stripped away as the play lays bare the darkness of the characters involved. Lorenzaccio is the cousin of the corrupt and tyrannical Duke of Florence, a city that had once enjoyed republic freedoms. He is the Duke's constant companion and only true friend, working ceaselessly to uncover plots and conspiracies, as well as procuring women to feed the Duke's insatiable desires. Because of all of that, Lorenzaccio is hated and reviled throughout Florence.
However, Lorenzaccio hides a secret; he has only ingratiated himself with the paranoid Duke because he dreams of one day becoming the savior of Florence by assassinating him.
Exposition des arts vivants Paris: Leon Roudiez New York: Reading it, I sometimes felt I was listening to an opera in my head. There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Sur les traces de Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux exh. Cultural Approaches to the History of Medicine:
Lorenzaccio is thus the most tragic of idealists: Only too late does he understand the corruption he has inflicted on his own soul; in the end, his desire to wield the blade is less a triumphant fulfillment of his goal than it is a lonely howl of pain at the darkness he has caused himself. And even after he completes his mission, the consequences do not match those that Lorenzaccio had imagined; and in the end there is nothing left for him.
So one one hand the play can be read as a warning about the perils of losing one's self in a single-minded dream. In the end, it is only the dreamer that affects true change - and it is only the others who reap parasitical benefits. This, I think, may be Musset's principle theme: On a personal note, I hope this is not true. But from my casual understanding of history, it seems as if it often is. This play is very visual in its form, Musset wrote it as a beautiful creation where he truly gives us the freedom to build, in parallel with his play, our own creation. Wrote it in a way where our imagination and his creation become one. Originally, Lorenzaccio wasn't written to be played, even though it has been staged. It is an inner stage. Musset really lets you, and wants you, to use this isn't the right word but i can't find better your sensibility, as he shows all of his. The moral conflict between good and bad in the story is well portrayed through the main character Lorenzo diminutive Lorenzaccio but also in the supporting characters. The ending is well conceived. I credit her and a college professor with helping me significantly improve my essay writing, which helped me throughout college and graduate school in all subjects.
Lorenzaccio is a great French play, and though there are many others, I would say that this one is quite accessible. Although I had to read this for school, it turned out a lot better than I expected. I don't usually like theater books, I just find it impossible to read them but this one was actually cool. I'm not the kind of person to see all the secret meanings behind everything an author writes and I didn't get any of the political messages Musset put in there but I enjoyed the story nonetheless.
The first time I read it, it was at hisghschool, we had to study it. I thaught Hamlet was my favorite play: Lorenzaccio is by far my favorite play ever. The complexity and the depth of the main character, added with the ease reading the book make it really interesting and entertaining. His family was upper-class but poor and his father worked in various key government positions, but never gave his son any money. His mother was similarly accomplished, and her role as a society hostess, - for example her drawing-room parties, luncheons, and dinners, held in the Musset residence - left a lasting impression on young Alfred.
Early indications of Musset's boyhood talents were seen by his fondness for acting impromptu mini-plays based upon episodes from old romance stories he had read. A History of Infant Feeding Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press A History from Antiquity to the Present Oxford: Age and Identity ed.
