Really enjoyed Mary O'Rourke's autobiography.

Her voice is so clear throughout. While she's not slow to take credit for improvements to Irish society on the whole while she was in office Her honesty is to the fore at all times and I love the line 'I thought he was just being Padraig Flynn: Mar 01, Caoimhe Levins rated it it was amazing.

It was absolutely a brilliant read. While reading it I felt as if Mary O' Rourke was talking directly to me.

O It is a deeply interesting book which I believe provides one with a greater understanding of the Irish state and history, many evocative chapters detail the Lenihan political dynasty and also give us a view into the worlds of former Taoisigh Haughey, Ahern and Cowen. It is very interesting to see the many improvements in Ireland as recalled by Mary, i.

Later in the book the events leading to the recession, bank guarantee and the IMF intervention are recalled vividly. Hearing these events from an insider is gripping. While it may be slightly biased from a political point of view and it is obvious Mary was from a more privileged background than most Irish people of the time,boarding-schooled, university educated and having parents who were university edcuated, she comes across as very likeable. Her love for family and her husband is is genuine and makes her account very human and moving.

Her emphasis on education is paramount and it is an engaging enjoyable memoir. Dec 15, Izzyreads rated it liked it. O'Rourke's memoir, Just Mary is conversational fast and readable romp through a career in Irish politics which saw her serve in a number of Government departments including stints in Education, Health and Public Enterprise.

Conor Lenihan was a Minister of State. O'Rourke was widowed in January , following the death of her husband, Enda. She has two sons.
