December 21, Imprint: You can read this item using any of the following Kobo apps and devices: They are sophisticated cozies. I have enjoyed the books in this series. The writing is intelligent, clever, smooth, and engaging.
The books are set in in a fictional English village outside of London, and were originally published in the late s. Thank goodness they are being republished. I enjoy reading them more than Agatha Christie. They are fun and enticing. The characters are interesting and well developed enough to get you through the various intriguing plots, which always have twists and turns. No one character is overdone to the point of being annoying. Malory is an enjoyable, resilient, smart, thoughtful, compassionate character whom I enjoy visiting.
Her cast of regulars are a great support team with their own story lines. This one did not disappoint. This is the 6th in the series. The story was complex and kept me guessing until the end. This one involves a suspicious death in a nursing home of a woman that leads to the revelation of a person with many hidden motives and plans.
I don't like to write reviews that tell too much. You can find details if you like. I just want you to know that if you enjoy British mysteries and smart writing, give this a try. So many of the greats are gone: James and Christie, whom I mentioned. It's hard to trust authors with your money these days.
One person found this helpful. Very enjoyable book in the Mrs. If you are a fan of British 'cozy' novels, you will love this series. I do recommend reading them in order. I would definitely advise anyone reading this series to use Google to find one of those lists to use as a guide since some of the novel titles have changed.
I use the Fantastic Fiction site for the various series that I read. Mallory series is one of my absolute favorites and I was quite happy to see more of them offered in the Kindle format. The only other thing I might add is the Kindle version has some mild formatting issues. The font sizes change from one size to two sizes larger and then smaller again all on one page. It isn't anything related to my DX because I checked it on my partner's smaller Kindle keyboard. This is only a minor annoyance however. I like the Mrs Mallory books.
The characters are well drawn, they come across as real people. I enjoyed this book because of the mystery as well as the insight into life in a village in England. It was a fun read. I find some of the interaction between Mrs Mallory and the police far fetched but with this type of mystery you have to suspend belief.
It is not for those who enjoy police proceduals or hardboiled detectives. If you like the cozy mystery this is for you. The village of Taviscombe is a nice place to visit. I like all the Mrs. Malory mysteries and this one was as promised. I just wish there were more of this kind of British mystery out there - I have exhausted Agatha Christie and others of the cozy variety, but Hazel Holt is right up there with the best of them.
I really enjoy Hazel Holt's gentle tales. Reading Hazel Holt is like visiting an old friend who lives in a charming town, serves up delicious pastries and provides interesting gossip. This book is a satisfying mystery. Just love visiting an old friend again in these books. Intriguing mysteries, and very evocative of English small town middle class life. I must have missed this with its original title, but pleased to have found it now. Up to Ms Holt's usual high standard of tea parties, cats, dogs, and murder. See all 18 reviews.
