Last Gasp

Editing and formatting are top-notch, I noticed no issues. The artworks herein are absolutely fantastic and the cartography in color is just as glorious, though I wished the module had player-friendly, key-less versions.

The pdf comes fully bookmarked for your convenience. You see, this can be played as an adventure…sure.

Ahem, let me spell that out for you: You DO want to run this. For one, this is a defiantly, dauntingly old-school module in all the right ways: It presents a dungeon that is as much a character as any adversary, one suffused by lore and flavor in every single room…and it represents a dungeon that rewards the players and PCs for engaging it, for thinking, getting invested, getting into the mindset of the place.

This is NOT an easy module. Each combat, each interaction, each trap — everything is carefully and deliberately-crafted with a craftsmanship and artistry that manages to stand by the best of Midgard-modules, evoking a sense of consistency rarely seen in modules for current rules-system. I consider this module to be a masterpiece that is significantly better than its humble page-count would suggest.

Whether for convention purposes, to bring some respect or challenge to your games or to simply experience this shining jewel of a module; heck, even from just a scavenging-perspective, this is worth every cent of its asking price thrice. Even if you usually only play OSR-modules.

Even if you play a different system in your main campaign and only are cursorily familiar with 5e, this is worth converting. Jackie — February 22, Very fun and deadly one shot. Excellent traps and mechanics. If you have a group of people that love a challenge and surviving by the skin of their teeth then this is for you. If you have an inexperienced group, you will likely want to tone down the difficulty a bit. Armin — July 28, I bought this model and found it to be great. However, there are two issues that I was wondering if I could get help with.

Once I have them I can run the adventure for my friends. Hopefully it will be posted somewhere that is easy to find. Very promising for those who like that sort of thing, but alas The Keep did not keep its promise, and the latter half of that book and of its TV transfer was pretty deplorable. So I read eagerly. This author was master of his craft, and his account of the tank battles with the SS held my attention in a way such a narrative would not normally do.

Last Gasp (5th Edition)

There was a lot of it, but even when the heroes reached the sinister Dom Caern it was taking a long time to locate the Geist, the Lovecraftian or worse fiend that awaited them. I was starting to experience a twinge of restiveness at that, and sure enough after the release of the Geist there is another long sequence of tank warfare that was very much like the earlier one. However I was starting to spot other, similar, features. In particular there are occasional digressions that neither advance the action nor are of much interest in themselves, even if cleverly dressed up as the ramblings of one amiable pedant among the men.

(one's) last gasp

Even in when Einstein was already old hat this elucidation of the structure of the atom was baby-stuff; and the long tirade that the girl prisoner discharges at the captured German doctor on the theme of his alleged failure to depose Hitler was trite beyond words, especially the many words it takes. This makes things too easy for an author, because there are no restrictions on time or action, and it is all more of a substitute for true imagination than an exercise of that faculty.

In particular the Geist has a bewildering range of powers far beyond what I remember seeing in the comics my son used to read at age 7. And in passing, what became of the supposed ability of these SS to see in the dark? A lot was made of that in the early pages, but unless I missed it somehow it disappears later. Nevertheless I finished the book in three days, and that is a real tribute to the quality of the writing. What is much better than even is the characterisation. A good number of the officers and men not to say the solitary woman come across as real personalities and not as waxworks or dummies.

That helps right at the end which, greatly to my own surprise, I found to be the best sequence in the whole volume. The first-person narrator takes us through a touching and affecting resume of his surviving fellow combatants at Dom Caern. He tells us what had become of them all, and I found that he made me care about that and them. Good, plausible characters and interesting story line, though I felt that some of the "horror" content was a little juvenile at times and detracted slightly from my enjoyment of the book.

Nevertheless, I would recommend the book for the overall content. Though in the main well written, I did I feel that the proof reader or the editor should have put the author "off of" the annoying, totally incorrect and oft repeated use of the expression "OFF OF". Took a chance on this - my first Kindle purchase - and it did not disappoint! Truly epic in scope, delivery, horror and emotionally resonant finale, I thoroughly recommend it, and any fans of the genre - or those of great reads in general - would be mad to miss it!

With a lot of fantasy added. I was gripped from the beginning right to the end. One person found this helpful. OK but not amazing, it wears it's influences proudly on it's sleeve.
