It really bogs down following a climactic bit at the midpoint. Sometimes language is awkward or obscure, but at other times scene descriptions are well judged to give just the right amount of information to build a strong picture without becoming dull. Worldbuilding is strong and the magic system in particular has some really fun, cool elements. The mystery part of the first half of the book i I didn't finish reading this book. The mystery part of the first half of the book is done well, with information revealed at the right time.
Overall, in need of some editing but not awful. Jun 14, David Wallace rated it really liked it. A fun book, one of those books you want to read at one sitting. Good plotting, characterization, and world building. Horst makes a sympathetic protagonist, and the multiple plot threads weave together well.
There's some mystery and a few twists to keep you guessing along the way to a satisfying conclusion. All in all, a literate and fun fantasy, well worth reading.

I almost was turned off from the story because there were so many terms and names and history just dumped into the first few pages that my eyes crossed a little trying to keep track of it. Fortunately, it started moving better after that and I was able to move along with it. Over all, I liked the world building. I really liked the Kuhrisch. So, I like the Kuhrisch and Horst and Rufus.
The Kuhrisch felt similar but not identical, and I liked that. The mix of familiar real life stuff — the use of French terms and German names, for example — is interesting, as well as the mixing of the mage magic, like fantasy and paranormal together. This book was interesting to read for me.
Horst was kind of just pulled along till the very end and I would have liked to have seen him take control more, but where we went with Francis was a surprise and interesting. The story was interesting, though I found it was overwritten in some areas and in others it kind of dragged and wandered. Singular points I really enjoyed: I hear tell from the author that the next book will have a lot of focus on the Kuhrisch, so I will definitely be checking that out.

Repeat this process until only one door remains. Ranged or Magic is best for this step, as the beasts won't move, and will use a ranged attack. When using Melee , they will also use a melee attack that has a chance to poison Use your Throwing knives if you brought them because they make for speedy kills on the illusions.
There may be an issue with the quest—if you don't see any monsters when you enter the room, just log out and log back in. This room represents Tolna 's hopelessness because some players give up when the Hopeless Creatures die and the bridge does not appear.
In this room, you'll find five hopeless creatures. They need to be killed three times each to make them die. Moreover, if they are poisoned, the poison effect is lost when they reach their next phase. Once you've killed them all, the Bridge of Hope will appear. After crossing the bridge, go through the exit, and you'll see a short cutscene. Tolna , a three-headed beast, is in the final room.
Beware, as this is a multicombat zone, so all three heads will attack you at once.

They use a ranged attack from a distance and will very rapidly melee when up close. They are not very strong, but they attack quickly and will poison you, so bring Antipoison and a decent amount of food. Kill each head, and Tolna will become human again. The three heads are very easy to beat if you use Ranged or Magic. Talk to Tolna, and he will take you back to the surface. Talk to him again and he will reward you.

The blurb available on Amazon suggests that the protagonist is Horst, a young nomadic trader who learns he has magical abilities and has to remain in Highford for training. However, there are several other points of view, including important mages, the guard captain and beggar Francis.
Horst himself seems a superfluous character. In all else, he follows instructions from his tutors and makes almost no decisions for himself. Most of his scenes have very little to do with the core plot relating to the murders and their culprit. Characterisation in general is fairly shallow.
In one case, the character Francis seems to accept a state of affairs far too easily and unquestioningly — which serves the plot, but at the cost of his characterisation. White has, however, managed to give his characters a distinct voice each, which are generally appropriate to their social position and background. The plot is carefully woven, with lots of characters and elements involved, but after the half-way point, which feels very much like an ending on its own, the pacing slows down and direction is lost; this is why I stopped reading.
There remained little pulling me forward.
