Lovely food and atmosphere.
Nice and small so cosy restaurant. A fantastic meal and reasonably priced. I have rarely eaten somewhere with such great service and I loved all the unexpected extras- would highly recommend! Our favourite restaurant, easily matching some of the Michelin establishments that we've tried.
The tasting menu was sensational, the wine recommendation was spot on. It's a low-key and fairly casual tone, delightful to eat in whether you are with friends or family. The service is also excellent. We love this place. Fantastic tasting menu and wine flight. The perfect place for a very special occasion. Unfortunately a poor experience. Timings were out on service throughout and it was so rushed.
Only 3 people front of house for the whole restaurant on a very busy Friday night is unsufficient and it showed.
Food was good but not amazing and unfortunately every dish tasted smoked which meant beautiful flavours were constantly overpowered. A vegetarian main titled squash had all but two meagre pieces of squash which was disappointing. Sprout tops were the highlight of the meal. Decor is stuck in the 90s which is such a shame for a beautiful building. A lot missed the mark. We informed front of house before we left but got little more than a shrug- oh well your loss.
Arriving early in the evening, the staff were very attentive and welcoming however as the evening went on and the busier the restaurant became, there was a noticeable strain on the staff and this impacted upon the service with quite long gaps between the later courses and accompanying wine. Aside from that minor issue, the food and wine was first class and the ambiance just right for a celebratory dinner. I would not hesitate to recommend it to friends and family. Wonderful meal in a very relaxed environment - your beer list definitely needs improving though.
Not a lot of choice if you would like a beer with each course. I keep coming back and I keep enjoying it more and more. The serving staff are a gem to behold too and they bring the good and wine to life.
My favourite restaurant of all time. Innovative and delightful taste combinations on the five course tasting menu.
Presentation and portions well balanced. Fantastic meal and service, so good we have booked again!!! Another most enjoyable evening shared with friends. Great menu options with delicious fresh local produce. Exquisite flavours of starters, mains and deserts, accompanied by fine wine. Owners and staff ensure very best customers experience. Booked Sunday lunch for four for my wife's birthday. Great food, lovely staff and just a very pleasant and happy experience.
The food was modern, clever and innovative.

Would highly recommend this restaurant. Our most recent visit to Orwell's was our eighth approximately but we hadn't been in a few years. Our previous visit had convinced us that the standards were slipping, and that it was no longer worth the premium price. This visit was a birthday lunch, but we also wanted to see if the standards had come back up.
Orwells is a lovely restaurant with a delightful menu, a strong, innovative kitchen, lots of local produce, etc. But it's just not as good as it could -- and, at the prices, should -- be. The food was lovely, but lacked dazzle -- aside from a dramatically served amuse bouche. The lamb rump wasn't exactly tough, but it simply wasn't as supple as it should have been. And our deserts were unimpressive: High notes included the by-the-glass wine recommendations, which were both interesting and spot-on pairings with the food. Sadly, the service was slow, with a long wait between courses.
At the end, after asking for the bill, we waited for so long that we eventually left our table and went to the bar to pay. Lastly, the simple but endearing ambience of the otherwise lovely room is let down by a middle-brow selection of art that jars rather than complements. Either more rustic or more sophisticated would be an improvement. The stuff in there, at the moment, looks like it's been leased from Lemongrove, or some other overpriced high-street art shop.
We want to love Orwells as much as we once did, but it'll be a while before we try again. Very good food and friendly service, although when we asked one of the waitresses for some more bread, we received 2 glasses of champagne??? We did get the bread eventually but unfortunately the champers went back. As the restaurant filled up it did get quite loud and noisy. We are coming back on Thursday 4th October with our son and daughter-in-law as a birthday treat. Fab place, very knowledgable staff. Lots of homegrown produce cooked to perfection. There is nowhere locally that gets close to the quality of the food and the pure enjoyment of an evening here.
Only our second visit to Orwells but there will be many more in the future. Sign up Sign in. Overview Photos Menu Reviews. Good for a Date. Great for Outdoor Dining.
