The stage is, quite literally, set at the Democratic convention for the election of the party's presidential candidate - and Senator Gregg Hartmann, with his diabolical alter ego Puppetman and murderous ace henchmen in tow, is there to watch his political star go supernova. But moreso, Ace in the Hole is the novel that knocked the idea of a mosaic novel out of the park. Whether this is due to the familiarity of each au Ace in the Hole 6th book in the Wild Card series continues the storyline of Senator Hartmann's bid for the presidency. But he is smart, funny, and loyal. And even if Tachyon's

One of the best stories I've read this year. Would recommend this to anyone who likes action and suspense with Stone Jackson, Senator Lacey's bodyguard, must impersonate the senator when the senator takes off with his latest mistress.
Would recommend this to anyone who likes action and suspense with their love stories. I love that both men are strong and both want to look out for, and protect the other. Jack was the epitome of everything that I certainly and many others would see as bad politician. I thought Stone could have made real trouble for him by switching policy on a number of issues! Stone and Christian do get a case of insta lust on first sight and whilst I enjoyed them to Definitely 3.
Better hopes with Jill in charge. Feb 06, Nicole rated it it was amazing. Mar 26, Jane PS rated it liked it Shelves: Cute and sweet as expected from this series.
Ace in the Hole is the sixth volume in the Wild Cards shared universe fiction individual storylines which were then edited together into one novel length story. Aces that are in the hole never use their powers in a way that can be traced back to them in any identity. Many aces in the s, when anti-wild card.
The action is pretty good and the story flows. Nov 24, M'rella rated it liked it Shelves: Nov 18, The Novel Approach Reviews rated it it was amazing. Christian Chatsworth-Brandeis is aide to a real idiot of a senator, Jack Lacey. And he has a special talent for knowing how to juggle all the balls, keeping the senator on the straight and narrow. Or, not so much! When the senator takes off with someone who is not his wife, and is nowhere to be found, Christian has to Christian Chatsworth-Brandeis is aide to a real idiot of a senator, Jack Lacey.
When the senator takes off with someone who is not his wife, and is nowhere to be found, Christian has to scramble to come up with a plan. He drags none other than Stone Jackson, the designated bodyguard for the senator, into this plan. With a little makeover, Stone looks almost like the senator. Can they pull this off and fool the constituents, Mrs. Jill Lacey, and the paparazzi until they can get the senator back? Stone is ex-military and works for Wild Cards, Inc. Stone is every bit a rough around the edges, take no prisoners kind of bodyguard.
He, like Christian, also has the need to be perfect at what he does. But he and Christian both have a weakness—each other! Some may think the attraction for them is too fast, but who cares? They are just hot and cute together. They are made for each other, make a great team, and have a lot of balls to juggle to keep the charade going.
Ava Drake created a crazy, funny and adorable story, but also made it a good mystery with a serious and dangerous side. I hope there will be a story about them at some point. He did a really good job with Stone Jackson, and gave him that bit of a sexy growl and Georgia drawl. He brought out the humor, emotions, and a serious side to his narration too. Jul 04, Cat rated it really liked it Shelves: Christian loathes his boss, but he loves his job as aide to a senator.
Desperately needing a break one evening, he heads to the bar of the hotel. I giggled my way through this book. I felt so badly for Stone.
Despite the fact that he agreed to masquerade, he was so obviously out of his element that it was nearly farcical. Drake did an excellent job portraying the moral dilemmas Stone faced repeatedly. The characters are fleshed out well, there is sizzling chemistry between the two main characters from the start, and the frustration they face in trying to not be together for the sake of the job is written nicely. Jun 02, Morgan Skye rated it liked it Shelves: The blurb sets up the main story — and the main story is the center piece of the book.
Though the relationship building between Stone and Christian is certainly part of this, the intrigue and politics are center stage. But the story quickly changes after that point. Instead of the frenemies and angry sex The blurb sets up the main story — and the main story is the center piece of the book. Instead of the frenemies and angry sex and the beginning of a relationship I was expecting I got way more political intrigue than I wanted.
There was lots of chemistry but not many feels. Aug 18, Crystal Marie rated it it was ok. Ace in the Hole by Ava Drake had a lot going on. It was political mystery and an alpha romance rolled into one. They give lip service to fighting their attraction once they realize how closely they must work, but they wind up in bed too many times for the reader to buy either of them making a true effort. The events were too outrageous for any amount of believability.
The whole book was riddled with similar instances, which made it very difficult to suspend my disbelief for any of it. This is just my opinion and I have no doubt many readers will have a different experience. Sep 04, ElaineY rated it liked it Shelves: John Solo Good plot but the writing was, for the most part, full of cliched phrases and clunky - lots of " While sexual attraction is easy to buy into, a casual hookup developing into a romance and an HEA is much harder and I found the insta-love too implausible. I would have liked it more if the romance was a little slower in developing but it was rushed through.
There were character inconsistencies - like the senator being such a bigot, mouthing some really politically-incorrect things yet Stone mentions how it's a pity he was so charismatic. Stone is also supposed to be inexperienced when it comes to bottoming - he sure didn't act like it. Overall, a bit of a disappoint because while I enjoy political themes in my romance, the execution of this one was weak.
Jul 01, Diverse rated it really liked it Shelves: I really love the Dreamspun Desire books. Each one is so different but the same. They are romantic love stories. Some suspenseful and some read like a windswept romance. Ace in the Hole falls smack in the middle of that. Throughout this book so much happens.
The Senator goes I really love the Dreamspun Desire books.
The Senator goes missing, Stone impersonates him, politics runs amuck, and a romance blooms. It made it flow a lot better than I think one POV would have. I will say however, I found some of the dialog a wee bit cheesy at times between Stone and Christian. I admit to even saying oh my god when I heard some of their dialog. It is a romance with minimal suspense, no angst, and some drama. Jun 22, Tina rated it it was amazing Shelves: I loved this story, it is smart, funny, and really mind blowing chemistry between the characters.
Christian works for a US senator. He is a little up tight, a whole lot organized, and likes to be in control. I loved how he manages people to get them to do what he wants. He is very good at his job and is a good person too. Stone is a bodyguard. He is rough around the edges but has a huge heart. What I loved is he lets Christian be in charge. He is man enough to let someone else take the reigns and not feel threatened by that. These two together are pure heat. They have a chemistry that jumps off the pages, but they also work incredibly well as a team. I was cheering for them all the way.
I love a story that is fast paced but full of love and romance, Ace in the Hole will be on my keeper shelf. I look forward to reading much more by Ave Drake in the future as well. Jun 30, Mel Bradley rated it liked it. This was a fun quick read, but it lacked depth of character and plot. The beginning grabbed me, with the thought of two alpha males coming together full of suspense and muscle… but as soon as the plot started, the character dynamics fizzled out quite a bit.
The story and the characters seemed almost cliche at times - it has the possibility of bein This was a fun quick read, but it lacked depth of character and plot. Jun 12, Katy Beth Mckee rated it it was amazing Shelves: Stone gets thrown into the political pool head first and in the deep end.
