Bell rated it it was amazing. If your name is Trevelyan, you'd better be a good historian, and there is no disappointment in that department.
I must declare an interest, in that one of my 19th century cousins plays a cameo role in this wonderful story of the British domination of the Sicilian marsala trade, and completely coincidentally I was taken to tea at one of the Whitakers' English country houses when I was about 20, and long after they had ceased to live there.
But I don't think it has biassed me, except into reading If your name is Trevelyan, you'd better be a good historian, and there is no disappointment in that department. But I don't think it has biassed me, except into reading the book in the first place. One of the charms of the book is that its story is somehow disconnected in time and place from the grand events that dominated European history. It is a secret garden, or let us say, decorated bridge, between Il Gattopardo and Osborne, and you can float on it very happily, belief suspended for as long as you wish.
And with pages, that is quite long.
You won't regret it. Mark Spano rated it liked it Nov 22, Carla Natta rated it liked it Apr 15, Burns added it Oct 01, TK marked it as to-read Jan 14, Sigrun Schulz marked it as to-read Oct 19, In April , they were together in Venice visiting with Horatio Brown.

He was known by the Anglo-Americans in Rome as "the post-boy", due to his young age. Hird was engaged to a woman, but he accepted Gower's offer to live with him and broke the engagement.
About them, Oscar Wilde remarked, on one occasion, "Frank may be seen, but not Hird. Hird accused Shackleton's brother, explorer Ernest Shackleton , of involvement be in the fraud.
But in the end Hird recanted his words. The entire programme was in French, and one of the attendee told Hird that it was "just like being at home". Gower died in and in , Hird proposed to Delia Whitaker , one of Gower's friends, but she rejected him.
