Her name is Simone. She is smart, funny, talented and, well, complicated. If the choice is upholding the law or protecting those he loves, which way will the big fella turn? Meanwhile, the other two thirds of MCM Investigations have problems of their own to worry about. All Bunny McGarry wants is a spot of breakfast and a decent cup of tea. So imagine how annoyed he gets when two masked men attempt to rob the New York diner he is in?
Unfortunately, dealing with that problem just leads to a whole lot more.
Some ex-employees of the US government are really taking that advice to heart by using their mayhem-creating abilities to maximise their investments. When one of their fund managers has a momentary crisis of conscience and confesses all to a woman he hardly knows, they will stop at nothing to deal with the problem.
The way different characters are interwoven in the story makes it all the more interesting, I could have made up several different endings. Nov 05, Pattianne rated it it was ok. Louisiana is one of my favorite settings so it was a joy to write this book about a young woman who was raised in a tribe of urchins by a man much like Dickens' Fagan. I hope you enjoy Maddie's adventure as she finds herself and love along the way. Will Maddie and Tom listen to their hearts or will they choose honor over love?

While she works to be as good as a person can be, given the circumstances, a young girl is foisted upon her in a situation that doesn't allow for legal participation. As Maddie deals with the girl, a reoccurring nightmare of herself as a young girl causes her to wonder about the other people in the dream, and she wonders what significance it plays in her life. As she hunts muskrats among the alligators, she is sought by a Pinkerton agent seeking to solve two cases by finding the young girl that was kidnapped by Maddie's brothers and by finding a woman slightly older than Maddie appears, but whom Maddie may have known as a child in the tribe of orphans and refugee children.
Believing her past is something not to be tolerated by a respectable Pinkerton agent, and needing to figure out how to deal with the young girl, Maddie's encounter with Tom, the Pinkerton agent, soon begin to influence her thoughts and encourages her to do right when all her training has taught her that sometimes the only way to get where you're going is illicitly. Decent writing with a basic plot often found in such stories, the story would be rather ordinary except for the obvious historical research the author reflects in her knowledge of the less-well-known culture in the bayou during the latter half of the s.
With good knowledge of poling, pirogues and propriety of the time, the author has created a story that holds your interest by describing a way of life that seems to be a cross between Dickensonian, gypsies and homeless riffraff. This is a good book to be read at leisure. This is Maddie's story or as you will find out her actual birth name is Megan.
She is the second oldest of four sisters who were separated as children after their parents died and their Uncle got rid of them either selling them or giving them to an orphanage. Maddie has grown up on the streets of New Orleans and has no recall of her childhood except a reoccurring nightmare with faceless people. She has grown up tough learning the skills that keep her alive on the streets. Maddie is trying to change her ways and finally meets her match in a Pinkerton agent hired by her sister to find her but he actually gets called in to help with a kidnapping fo a child and this leads him into meeting Maddie and eventually after much chasing around and traveling Tom Abbott discovers that maddie and Megan are the same person.
There is forgiveness, love, and faith learned by Maddie to bring her back to her older sister Laura Lovie. One person found this helpful. This is a story about children who are kidnapped, and made to forget their past.
They are made to join a "tribe" of pickpockets and thieves. A Pinkerton man is hired to find the latest child who is kidnapped. The child is taken to Maddie, who is one of the women who had been kidnapped when she was a child. It is mostly about the child, the woman and the Pinkerton man. It is a well written story which tells you how the "Tribe" grows and how they operate. There is a lot of interaction between the 3 main characters. It is very interesting, and keeps your interest very well. The woman lives on the Bayou, and it tells a bit about how she lives and how their lives evolve.
I liked this book because it is a sweet story that is fast to read and the characters are so human. Incidents in their lives cause the same kind of personal responses --loneliness and hardships--that we all feel from time to time.
Plus it had a 'happy ever after' kind of ending that we romatic love! I recommend this book as a book to relax by; a book to spend a rainey evening reading; a book to empathize with the leading characters. I recommend it for people who love a good love story. I like the other books by Jill Marie Landis that I have read , all of which relate to this same story line family. What this story really does is show how the human spirit can adapt and survive - even thrive - against nearly any hardship.
