Karl regularly escapes from reality to the digital world, with his followers coming more and more to represent his social support network.

At the same time Karl increasingly distances himself from his family and classmates, with his interest for the real world sustained only by his feelings for the nonchalant Doro. Ultimately let down by love, Karl seeks revenge and causes a great deal of distress in the process. Having turned to his digital friends for help, he now gradually becomes their puppet, as they direct his actions via live stream.

Is he wise to surrender control over his life? In answering this question the film manages to incorporate both light-hearted and captivating scenes into its innovative narrative form almost seamlessly. As for Russia, a country also able to look back on a long and rich experience of migratory waves of Vietnamese students and workers, our search for cinematic reflections on the issue unfortunately left us empty handed.

The plotlines of these films reflect the manifold experiences of Vietnamese migrants, starting with the pioneering students who enrolled at universities in Eastern Germany and fellow socialist countries in the sixties, in order to apply the knowledge gained abroad to the construction of socialism in their homelands. Then came the contract workers in the seventies and eighties, followed by German reunification in the nineties, with the joy it triggered soon giving way to fear of deportation and racist violence. Taking flight to safer shores by sea suggests parallels with contemporary migratory movements, and yet the history of the Vietnamese diaspora in Central Europe is, as is true of every tale, unique.
