It is simple to understand, Although written from a US perspective which means any legal references, medical definitions, websites, etc. A dry read but definitely an informative book on transgenderism. Jul 16, Leo Rain rated it liked it. I think that it is hard to give justice to a complex issue with a simple guide but this book did make me think about my life. The more stuff like this I read the more I realize how privileged I am in my identities and so I enjoyed reading it for that.

Great resource As a cisgender male, this is a great resource to educate one on what it means to be transgender. Having trans friends, I want to be sensitive and respectful of their experiences. One of the better information books I have read. Most books focus too heavily on the typical transgender stereotype. The author attempted to steer of that in this book. Transgender 101: A Simple Guide to a Complex Issue

Just as the title states, this is The very first course that you ought to take about this. It brought up quite a few things in it that were addressed in the best way that a person can with a complex subject as being transgender is. I had to read this for my own gender therapy.

Part of the homework, really. Read about people like you, and all that. Educate yourself about yourself. The bad thing is, is that I alre Actual rating: The bad thing is, is that I already had educated myself. I know most of the issues and discrimination and such like that. I know those things because I live it. For anyone else who didn't know anything about this subject, this would be a perfect book for them. Seriously, I even learned a few things about certain surgeries and the effects of T on the body, even though I had read a bit about it and understood it from having seen other people go through male puberty in my lifetime as a teenager.

I skimmed quite a bit of this books. Completely went over the chapter about discrimination because I don't want to read about the negative things. I also skimmed over the things to do with MTF's because that doesn't apply to me. Why read something that doesn't have anything to do with me, since I'm reading this for my education about myself? One day I might read the parts I skimmed to educate myself about the other side of things, although I also know quite a bit about that from knowing transwomen.

All in all, this is a good book for a beginner. It is interesting and presents the subject in simple ways, without over simplifying it. Mainly, it goes over transsexuals, and then addresses everyone else under the transgender umbrella in the last chapter. Sadly, I'm not a beginner in this topic, but I would honestly recommend this book for any person who knows a transperson so they can learn more about the topic without having to ask awkward questions.

I wanted to learn more about the transgender 'issue' for lack of a better word, since I have no experience or knowledge of this at all. Transgender os exactly what the title suggests: After reading it, I certainly understood more and came away with a sense of the right terminology and an overview of some major issues transgender people face. However, it's a very dry read. I would have loved to read more personal stories to get a better feel for all the feelings involved. The author did refer to some well-known 'cases', but even those felt purely informative. I'm sure the book would have benefitted greatly from a more personal approach.

Aug 09, Anton rated it it was ok Shelves: I didn't really like this book. It was really repetive at times, as if the author wanted to reach a certain word count but didn't have anything else to say. In the beginning of the book he aknowledges that many transpeople use other pronouns than he or she and yet thorought the book keeps saying 'transperson has to decide what to tell his or her friends'. The book was published in meaning that it has some outdated information about DSM etc.

There were also two points that really bothered me I didn't really like this book. There were also two points that really bothered me: That's aromantic for you. Also, the book implies that since cooking for one's spouse is stereotypically feminine thing, if a man does this, his gender expression is changing and he's practically transgender.

Dec 13, Arin Williams rated it liked it Shelves: The information was useful, but I became bored with it; to be fair, that boredom probably stems from knowing virtually all this information from other sources, including my own life experiences. I also wasn't a fan of nonbinary identities first being "put aside for now" in the introduction, then shoved into a catch-all chapter at the end of the book.

I guess folks like me are more of a topic? That and the outdated definitions in the glossary, particularly the old-school definition of bisexua The information was useful, but I became bored with it; to be fair, that boredom probably stems from knowing virtually all this information from other sources, including my own life experiences. That and the outdated definitions in the glossary, particularly the old-school definition of bisexuality that the community has largely rejected, turned me off to the book.

Great illumination of the difference between Gender, Sexuality, and Sexual prefer I think counselors and therapists who are open to working with the Trans crowd MUST read this book.

Sep 23, Holly rated it really liked it. In the introduction to this book, the author states that their goal was to write about the subject of transgender without focusing too heavily on their own personal story. To demonstrate as clearly as possible what goes through a transpersons head, the history of transgender and its medical classification. It is certainly an excellent introduction. I highly recommend it to everyone.

If everyone came pre-armed with the knowledge this book provides we might be lucky enough to see a world where trans-people aren't immediately stereotyped as being either mentally derranged or perverts! Sep 24, Lauryn Marton rated it really liked it Shelves: This is a succinct overview of sex, gender, orientation, and various trans issues. It works equally well for people who have never been introduced to these concepts as for those who are already very familiar. One particular thing I appreciated is that although the author is a trans man, he gave roughly equal representation to trans men and women and treated issues of gender differences with appropriate sensitivity. This book is a quick and fairly simple read, and well worth checking out. May 25, Natalie Tos byington rated it really liked it.

I found this book to be a good read for anyone. While I knew of the discrimination and other issues that trans people face, it was good to read of the biological twins who grew up in the same environment only to come out different with the ever too familiar sad ending. A great reminder in the book that society should just let people be who they are and accept them even if they are different than you.

Jul 23, Manoel rated it it was amazing. This books make me to know a little bit more about the transgender universe. As a non-transgender person, I had no idea before about this topic, which I found very interesting.

Now I know how much we, human beings, are diverse, and how this should be respected. I'm also reconsidering my concepts about gender identity and gender expression. Thanks a lot to the author! He explained in a simple and understandable language a complex topic.

Mar 31, Tucker rated it it was amazing. An excellent basic guide for family and friends of transgender people who want to understand more about what the transgender person is going through. While acknowledging that there's no "one way" to be, feel, or act transgender, the book lays out some straightforward concepts that are useful when dealing with transgender people and enables the reader to come away feeling that they have gained knowledge about the subject. Jul 19, Stacy rated it really liked it.

A short, very accessible, primer on transgender identities and issues. What I enjoyed most about this book is the author's tone - it is non-judgmental and tries to be light-hearted - conversational, even. It was written by a transperson and researched thoroughly, which bolsters its reputation as a good primer-type book.

The main thing you need to understand about this book is that, just as it says in the introduction, this is a BASIC guide for those who do not know anything about the Transgender community, or what a Transgender individual may have to face in their day to day life. This book educates the reader on terms used, the idea that even labeling a gender itself being rediculous, while expressing the very real negative societal stigma thrown at a transgender person.

A great read for someone who would like to learn a little bit about perspective. I recommend reading both texts, this one and then the other, to give yourself a better understanding of a Transgender person's experience with life. This helped inform be, that as a Gay man with Trans friends, who thought he understood what they go through, I NEVER in my wildest dreams, would face the harsh realities my Trans brothers and sisters have to face every day of their lives. This is a great book filled with the right information. However, I will say this: I was supposed to read this as homework from my gender therapist, that way I would be more informed.

I am just begining my transition, and I will say that this book does have a lot of information and all of it is accurate. Im not saying its a bad book or trying to discourage you from reading it even if you know everything there is to know. There are real stories in the book everywhere, which helps to compare to your own situation. Basically, this book covers all of the basics and it would be a good idea to read it yourself, then to give to a family member or friend that may not be so supportive. Still a great read. As a cisgender male, this is a great resource to educate one on what it means to be transgender. Having trans friends, I want to be sensitive and respectful of their experiences. This book provides a high-level overview to take that first step of understanding. He talks like a doctor so to speak. But he answered my questions. I've been friends with transgenders and I never wanted to ask all kinds of questions. I keep watching Caitlyn show but they only seem to give one side of how they feel. They tell Caitlyn you have to be Democrat and on certain things they say "nobody's business".

This book answered a lot of my questions and thing I wondered about. I always thought transgenders have courage like no one else because of all the physical things they have to go through. I still think they have more courage than other people. I could never go through things like that. This book answered a lot of my questions about the transgender community and its wide diversity. It also prompted new questions, and I wish I could have picked up the phone and called Mr. Teich to discuss them. Now I have a better understanding of the differences between sex, gender identity and gender expression, which has been the biggest obstacle for me in understanding transgender people.

I learned many other things as well, and I will be re-reading the book to make sure I didn't miss anything. I can't wait to discuss this book with my family and friends. Teich, for an excellent book, and for inspiring me to keep learning. I learned so much from this book, helping me see the difficult issues transpeople face. This book is very easy to understand and explains all issues in detail.
