The first page in each of Caroline Arnold's Animals series begins with basic facts about the featured animal including where the animal lives, habitat, food, animal class, and scientific name. Beginning with a mother awaiting the birth of her young, each book tells about the baby and each stage of development until the baby is grown and able to be on its own.
Additional facts are given in sidebars with more information on each animal's growth, habitat, and unique characteristics.
What an incredible day! This book should be added to your wonderful collection!!! I really loved this book! The parallels with the continuing controversy about returning Lolita, the only surviving captive orca from the Southern Resident community, are clear and present on every breath-taking page. In this short novel, Nicola Davies paints a rich and vibrant picture of island life, which feels as fresh as the sea air.
There is a map at the end of the book showing where the animal lives, as well as an index and glossary. Internet sites are listed for more information.
This series would be wonderful for beginning research projects, as well as popular titles for young readers to explore. The Caroline Arnold's Animals series features striking paper collages, clear text, and a picture-book format. A Killer Whale's World Author: With its succinct text and sprawling pictures, this story is perfectly suitable as a read-aloud.

It was important to establish a strong visual emotional connection between the mom and baby with which readers could identify. This is what stays in readers' minds and keeps them coming back to a storybook. Wasn't sure how I was going to solve the shipwreck without it looking too creepy. See final art above. Nicola Davies is the author of more than 50 books for children: She spent some years as a field biologist and studied humpback and sperm whales, and bats, before joining the BBC Natural History Unit as a researcher and then presenter. Following the start of her writing career, Nicola became a senior lecturer in creative writing, at Bath Spa University but has been writing full time for over a decade.
She now regularly runs workshops for children and adults to help them find their voices as writers and advocates for nature.
Find out what Nicola Davies is up to as our Writer in Residence. This field is required. This book is a great book for lovers of mystery and adventure- I highly recommend it. The plot is very clever, it grips you at times, and how it all comes together at the end is really clever.
My favourite character is Eugenia and her and Michael's bond as it develops throughout the story. It is an easy read and I found it easy to imagine the setting through the description. The ending was good- although you might need your tissues out at one point I found this book very gripping, exciting and at times adventurous.
I particularly enjoyed the part where Michael met a strange and mysterious man called Spargo.
