I felt like I was reading the original Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - yes, Jim's a zombie, but there's little else that makes this interesting as a zombie book. I was expecting a lot of incidents with the living dead, but until the last couple dozen pages, the only incidents were brief and isolated.
Because of this, it was confusing for me having read Twain's novel several years ago instead of recently to separate the original story, which Czolgosz follows very closely, from events that Czolgosz added. This book was a disappointment for me. Maybe my expectations of zombie parodies are too high, but I expected a bit more originality from the adapter and much more zombie action.
The most enjoyment that I got from Huckleberry Finn and Zombie Jim came from being reacquainted with Twain's story, so I would have been better off just reading the original or, to satisfy my taste for the living dead, trying a non-knockoff zombie novel.
This story is a satirical take on the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn with a zombie twist. I love these retakes, so this one appealed to me quite a bit. The book starts off commenting on the recent updated version where a certain word was replaced with a less sensitive one. Although the word essentially is the same thing, just a different word. A disease is spreading through out the land related to tuberculosis and causes a side effect that causes people to reanimate or return from the dead. It This story is a satirical take on the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn with a zombie twist.
It follows the path of the original story except there are run ins with undead hunters, but they are still bounty hunters. I can already tell you that this book will not be for everyone and I am sure that a lot of people will dislike it.
If you have a skewed view of life and enjoy the absurd that this book is for you though! I was very excited to read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Zombie Jim after just finishing the zombie mash ups of some of my other favorite classics. This one fell a little short for me, then again, Huck Finn wasn't one of my favorite classics.
Regardless, I do love the stubborn boy and ridiculous zombies. This one definitely isn't a home run. It is totally intriguing for me just because I love when history is changed in historical fiction. That part IS entertaining. I think that anyone wh I was very excited to read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Zombie Jim after just finishing the zombie mash ups of some of my other favorite classics.
I think that anyone who enjoys the zombie mash ups should give this one a try. If you love zombies or are just curious about what happens when slavery is replaced by undead laborers- try it out.
I don't regret reading it, but I probably won't be reading it a second time. Apr 24, William Bentrim rated it liked it. This book read like Mark Twain. I guess the book will appeal to the group I mentioned above. Aug 07, Chuck Davis rated it it was ok. While it amused in parts, it seems to me that if you are going to satirize what is arguably the greatest American novel ever written, you ought to either throw relevancy to the wind and just make it hilarious, or embellish Twain's forbidden moral.
Ultimately, it served only to circumvent the N-word censorship problem, although left on instance for what I assume to be homage. An interesting twist on Huckleberry Finn - instead of slaves there's tame and aggressive zombies. I liked it well enough; for the most part it was hardly any different from the original novel, except the ending. This "blood enriched classic" was a fun read. It was true to the original plot, full of the charming dialect and romance of the river rat life. Plus, of course, there were zombies, as promised. Good twist with the loyal and heroic Zombie Jim.
The end was rather disappointing, though. Aug 22, TCN5 rated it liked it. Super fun and light read. Got it as a Xmas gift. Read it everynight before bed. May 15, C. Jun 17, Susan rated it it was ok. Eh, this was not one of the better ones I have read. The original was painful enough to get through because of the way they spoke, and this one wasn't any better. Jan 13, Elisabeth rated it did not like it.
While other books in this genre made the zombie idea blend with the story, such as pride and prejudice, in this version it is just tacked on. Jan 02, Sandeep Shede rated it really liked it. This is a halfway decent zombification of the original story. Trivia About Adventures of Huc But Tom Sawyer he hunted me up and said he was going to start his own band of robbers, and I might join if I would go back to the widow and be respectable. So I went back. The widow she cried over me, and called me a poor lost lamb, and she called me a lot of other names, too, but she never meant no harm by it. Well, then, the old thing commenced again. The widow rung a bell for supper, and you had to come to time.
In a barrel of odds and ends it is different; things get mixed up, and the juice kind of swaps around, and the things go better. I do mean that when I say it, about taking stock in dead people, most dead people, especially these days. Folks say the world is turned on its ear. Pretty soon afterward I wanted to smoke, and asked the widow to let me.
This novel felt like an old story with a twist. See full terms and conditions and this month's choices. Now the way that the book winds up is this: In this world Tom still manages to con his friends to do his chores for him but instead of whitewashing the fence they have to sharpen the fence posts to points to help against a zum attack.. I was glad about that, because I wanted him and me to be together. If you've enjoyed the other undead mashups, you could do a lot worse Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter anyone?
That is just the way with some people. Here she was a-bothering about Moses, which was no kin to her, and no use to anybody, being gone, you see, yet finding a power of fault with me for doing a thing that had some good in it. And she took snuff, too; of course that was all right, because she done it herself. Her sister, Miss Watson, a tolerable slim old maid, with goggles on, had just come to live with her, and took a set at me now with a spelling-book.
She worked me middling hard for about an hour, and then the widow made her ease up. Then for an hour it was deadly dull, and I was fidgety. Now she had got a start, and she went on and told me all about the good place. She said all a body would have to do there was to go around all day long with a harp and sing, forever and ever.
I asked about if the folks with fissythis got to go there, too, and she said they surely did get to go, eventually, when their material selves were all over and done with. But I never said so. I asked her if she reckoned Tom Sawyer would go there, and she said not by a considerable sight. I was glad about that, because I wanted him and me to be together.
Miss Watson spelled fissythis like so: The humor of Twain's classic is just lost with the addition of the Zum, and the added bits do nothing to make the story resonate the way the original does. Most of the set pieces are there the picket fence, the camping trip, Injun Joe, Becky Thacher, etc. Please, stop this trend before it happens again. ARC provided by publ I tried - I really tried to get into this book.
ARC provided by publisher. Jun 16, John Poindexter rated it did not like it. The book did a pretty good job of sticking to the original story. But, I am not impressed with the Zum addition. First you don't see one until you are about three for ths of the way through the book, then it is really hard to relate to injun Joe as s Zum. I think the classic should be left alone and zombie books written for and about zombies. I received this Advance Reading Copy from Goodreads giveaways.
Aug 23, Michelle rated it it was ok Shelves: Basically a word for word account of the original classic tale but instead a life where Zums zombies roam around and Tom wants to become a Zum hunter and Injun Joe is more than just dead, but undead. And this took my forever to read only because I got bored with it and the lack of zombies to entice me to read on.
Overall I did enjoy reading about the boyhood of Tom, but will refrain from recommending this to anyone else. This novel felt like an old story with a twist. And this is exactly what I thought it would be. An enjoyable and easy read.
Mar 20, Mike Dougherty rated it really liked it Shelves: I never read the original Tom Sawyer adventures so im not sure if the story is re told into a different kind of adventure. I like this story because it is filled with adventure, love and true friendship. Tom and Huck go out to find a treasure and discover that they have walked into something totally unexpected.
This is a book that always kept me wondering what was gona happen next.

A great book that brings back the legend of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn back into our times. Feb 18, Michael Bates rated it it was ok. No more but very well could be less. This book just did nothing for me. I love the lets put a twist on classics. I love the undead aspect of it.
None of those things helped this book. I don't know what I was expecting. Zombie hunter Tom and Huck? That would be awesome but no. Might as well read the original than this one. No, I would not continue on this adventure with Tom, thank you. Aug 19, Lori Wilkey rated it liked it. This was a humorous retelling of the Tom Sawyer story but this time there are zombies known as Zum walking around.
A quick read, I did enjoy seeing some of the events that make Tom Sawyer classic with a different perspective. Instead of white washing the fence, Tom convinces his friends to make stakes to keep the Zum out. This was a fun, quick read. Jul 21, Heather rated it liked it Shelves: Another fun monster mash-up! If you enjoyed the original and love some zombies thrown in this is the one for you! And it's a fun read for the approaching Halloween holiday.
The beginning was a bit slow and there are some obvious changes from the original. I recommend it for a light fun read. Thanks to First Reads here on Goodreads for offering me the opportunity to read the book. Aug 12, Alicia rated it did not like it. Can I just start by saying that Twain fans would die and Twain himself would role over in his grave if he read this book.
While the book was imaginative, it lacked what I consider any effort to make a story real. I was highly dissappointed by this book. I couldnt even finish it, which is sad because this is only the third book that I have ever not finished. Dont waste your time or money! Jul 19, Donna rated it liked it Shelves: I won this from First Reads.
I liked it better than I thought I would. It's been a long time since I read the original, but this had the "flavor" that I remembered. I actually thought this was more entertaining than Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Jul 19, Shane rated it it was amazing. It obviously mimicked the original work, but the zombie Zum twist made a familiar story fun.
