Her second choice of a major, journalism also resulted in a dead end when she realized the college she had meticulously selected didn't actually offer a journalism major. The Balkars of Southern Russian and Their Deportation () (Russian Edition) [Karen Baker] on www.farmersmarketmusic.com *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Editorial Reviews. About the Author. Karen Baker's enthusiasm for other cultures has prompted a lifetime of travel with her husband, Verne, to many countries for.
Well, that has been more than fulfilled, as she was blessed with a husband, Verne, who also loves to travel. They have been on whale-petting expeditions, several forays into Alaska and Hawaii at the time considered the ultimate in travel , and more recently in countries around the world. Together, Verne and Karen have been to more than 20 countries, most of them for mission trips, blending opportunities to meet humanitarian, medical, spiritual and educational needs of those they met.
Their travels have taken them from building houses in Haiti to training school teachers in Ukraine; from climbing the ruins of the Maccabees under the hot sun in Israel to visiting the slums leftover from Communism in Armenia; from presenting the latest medical information to physicians in Nigeria to meeting Chinese tourists on the Gulf of Thailand; from meeting Iraqi refugees in Jordan to handing out clothes to refugees in Austria who had escaped violence in their own countries of Pakistan, Syria, Iran, and Afghanistan.
Wherever they have gone, Karen and Verne have been willing servants sharing the blessings they have enjoyed. Finding that friendships with people of other cultures is not limited to traveling, Karen has been a volunteer with refugees and immigrants, teaching English to foreign speakers and helping to assimilate them to the American culture, as well as editing university papers for international students. The enrichment provided by these relationships has more than fulfilled her wanderlust.

Better late than never! This is a striking work which is and will be forever an unexpected recognition to the memory of those thousands of innocent victims of the Stalin- Beria genocide. Karen Baker has blended her personal experience with groundbreaking research of the Balkarians.
This volume is a 'must read' for both those studying the social dynamics of people movements and anyone wanting a better grasp of the folk ways and mores and devastation of a victimized and deported people group. In all my travels around the world there has never been an experience quite like sitting in the home of a Balkar family, enjoying a meal in the midst of the breath- taking North Caucasus Mountains. This book will give you a greater glimpse of how the deportation of and attempted repatriation of have so drastically affected the lives of the Balkar people in the past and present. You will also learn much about their rich cultural heritage and how it impacts their everyday life.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who desires to learn more about the neglected peoples of the North Caucasus. I was quite impressed in reading the book by Karen Baker's passion in telling the story of the mistreatment, suffering, and eventual deportation of the Balkar peoples over many decades by the Soviet Union and Russian Empire. Reading history can be boring and depressing sometimes, but Karen held my interest throughout the entire book with her excellent writing style.
