Teenage angst and insecurity are legendary. Adolescents can be cruel. More often than not, in high school you know your place and stick to it. All of that seemed to melt away. Believe it or not, some day you will see each other differently, and you will all be friendly! In the United States, politics has become extremely divisive. People avoid family gatherings, and social occasions can be fraught with uncomfortable political exchanges. I have had personal struggles with one of my dearest childhood friends since we reconnected on Facebook a few years ago. She and I disagree vehemently in terms of politics.
It turned out not to be a problem. No one talked politics. I reconnected with my friend and we reminisced about our childhood sleep overs where we played Neil Diamond records and danced to the Beatles in a room lit with a black light bulb. Nothing brings that insecurity to the forefront faster than a reunion with people who knew you in your glory days.
Back then you were probably as close to physical perfection as you would ever be — no gray hair, no saggy neck, no wrinkles and no artificial joints. Yes, some people looked great and others were a little worse for the wear. As a group, we were grayer, balder and heavier. No one seemed to care. Perhaps we have all realized that our looks do not define us. What I remember is that people were kind. No one was shunned for carrying a cane or wearing thick glasses.
I know that as I have aged I have become happier in my own skin; it seemed as others felt the same way. At our reunion, a display table held photos of classmates who have passed. I had been unaware of some of these deaths. You do not want to have to rush or slap together a reunion at the last minute. Your committee members might live in other states or even other countries.
Some classmates might have changed their names. The earlier you begin assembling your committee, the more time you will have to reach out to the appropriate people. Contact your high school's alumni office. Many high schools have an alumni office. If the alumni office handles reunions, they might be able to assist you with the reunion planning. If they do not typically handle reunions, they might be able to assist you in other ways, such as by providing contact information for your classmates or suggesting local venues.
Before making any official decisions, talk to your high school administrators about how other class reunions were handled and about whether there are any class gifts you can use to help fund your reunion. Reach out to designated committee members. Some high schools appoint a reunion committee prior to high school graduation. For example, many high schools ask their Class President or Student Council Members to take on the role of reunion planning. Create a tentative meeting schedule. One of your committee members should be in charge of setting a meeting schedule to keep everyone on the same page. Decide to meet at predetermined intervals and put them in your calendar right away. Aim to meet twice a month while you are in the early stages of the planning process months before the reunion and once a week in the final two months before the reunion. If your committee members live in other cities or states, use video chats or conference calls to keep one another updated appropriately.
Create a tentative timeline. Some tasks are more important than others, and some tasks have to be done before other tasks can be completed.
It is therefore important that your committee develops a sensible timeline to allow your reunion planning to run smoothly. Set up a master list of class members. You will be gathering a lot of information from a lot of people.
