There has been some solid interaction in the comment sections on my last two posts: I thought it would be instructive to post those comments as one blog. Bob, you have a pretty compelling argument here. Which bothers me because I tend to be from the integrationist camp that has a passion for what Biblical Counselors are doing.
I have to ask this question: I do think Nouthetic counselors have made a very strong case for their position, I just remain unconvinced that the Nouthetic position is a position that all Christian counselors must take. Jason, I really appreciate your engagement and the spirit of your comment. First, this post is part of a much broader development I am working on for a new book. In that broader piece, I do address issues like those you bring up. In fact, I believe he is doing the opposite.
Paul is well read—as we should be. He makes a point of connection with them from what one of their poets has written. Paul was against integrating human reason with the wisdom of Christ. I am saying, as I indicated in the post, that all Christians who counsel must at least examine passages like Colossians 2 and build their approach to people-helping upon that foundation.

Hi Bob, Thanks for your ruminations! I think that at the heart of your critique you are exactly right. In the context of the current debates, it might be helpful if Christians at least mention both poles of the pair. Otherwise, we might come across as anti-science fundamentalists to which I know you are vehemently opposed!
I am confident you believe that Christians ought to be a people who are the most thankful for good science, because it glorifies God—although not as thankful as we ought to be for the grace that flows from redemption. Eric is a good friend. Thanks for engaging the post, Eric. And you are right in your assumptions about my overall view.
Of course, no one blog post with a ish words can address everything. The next chapter in the book does spend time on common grace and legitimate scientific research.
Are there any lines? I really like the focus on the creation mandate! The only qualification I might make there is, without an equally strong emphasis on creation grace my preferred term for common grace , the creation mandate can turn into our activity, and solely a function of law, whereas the concept of creation grace reminds us every good and perfect gift is from above, including our creation mandate activity.
And thanks for the push-back. It is living and active , which means that when you read it, it is not like reading a novel or educational resource or any other written thing in the entire world. It is the Word of God, with the Holy Spirit, that brings people to faith. Only it has the power to renew the mind and transform the heart! As we read it, God works.
Lord, your Word has power to convict me, reform me, and lead me to you. Help me to love reading it that through it I would also know and love you more! I believe it is because of this constant spiritual attack. Guard your time of reading the Bible, and remember that as you do read it, God Himself is speaking to you, and His power is at work in you to transform you into someone more like Christ. Father, keep the attacks of the devil far from me. Draw me to your Word, so that I can be strengthened and empowered in my faith.

In many Christian conferences and even literature, the point is often made that the local church does not bear the responsibility to disciple children; rather parents do. God created a perfect world. He gave Adam and Eve his boundaries for living, and sent them out to produce offspring and care for the beautiful world. Then one day, slithering between the trees, Satan came and planted a seed of doubt: What do you think? An obvious example of this is living together before marriage.
Make it my firm foundation for all of life. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. Rob Reinow, the author of the book we are using as a basis for these devotions, poses four questions to various Christian groups. Consider them for yourself, and answer each one:. Usually, hands boldly go up for the first two questions, then about half come down for the third, and only a quarter might be left after the fourth.
We believe the Bible is true!
We believe the Bible comes from God! It happens not just about sex. Consider tithing, managing money, divorce, caring for the elderly — the list goes on. We have people who reject the authority of Scripture, and therefore the authority of God. Search your heart and ask God to reveal to you those areas of life where you do not allow the Bible to be the authority in your life and do things your own way.
Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass away from the Law until all is accomplished.
Jesus was attacked by the devil, too. How did Jesus defend Himself?
He would not allow the devil to twist and misuse even one word of the Bible. Jesus understood this was a battle for truth, who gets to define it, and whether or not he would live by it. We have lots more to talk about!
