One Snap (That Girl Book 12)

HarperCollins Launches YA Novel on Snapchat

Users can see a list of sent and received messages and can see if messages were opened. In addition, users who are using the app at the same time can initiate a private teleconference. Teens and other users can send and receive unmonitored photos, texts, and videos. The content in Discover is not monitored, and it's not unusual to see words such as "f--k" or "s--t. Discover lets brands including Food Network, CNN, and Warner Music promote their content, which sometimes includes new films or music, and users can pay for replays of Snaps via in-app purchase.

There is no content related to drinking, drugs, or smoking in the app itself, but teens can send and receive unmonitored photos. Parents need to know that Snapchat is a popular messaging app that allows teens to exchange user-generated photos, texts, videos, and calls -- both audio and video. The developer claims that "Snaps" can't be saved within the app and are only viewable for one to 10 seconds before disappearing from the recipient's device, noting that the app notifies the sender if the recipient takes a screenshot of an image. Also, as of , users can play Snaps as long as they'd like until they exit that Snap, which deletes it as usual.

You can delete text messages sent through the app and Snaps, if they're unopened and used a saved picture rather than one taken on the spot. If users opt to share their location, they can see friends on a "Snap Map" and see Snapchat Stories from other users in various locations, and if they do opt in, they can use "Ghost Mode" to see others but not be visible themselves. In terms of location, friends can also send their own location and request a friend's location, which will update live for eight hours unless turned off. There's also an option to share public stories on other social media platforms, and premium publishers can access and use users' publicly posted stories.

The app has gained a reputation as a "sexting" app because outgoing and incoming pictures, videos, and texts are not stored on devices, but many teens use it simply to exchange fun, silly pictures. In light of a feature called "Snapstreaks," some kids may feel pressure to keep a streak trading Snaps within 24 hours over a period of days going. To compete with other group video chatting apps, it also lets you video chat with up to 16 friends at a time.

As of , Snapchat also has video-recording glasses called Specs available for purchase which record short videos that you can send to your phone and, from there, post to Snapchat. Check out their Safety Center and content for parents to get more information. Read the app's privacy policy to find out about the types of information collected and shared. SNAPCHAT is a photo-messaging app that allows users to put a time limit on a sent picture, text, or video so the recipient can see it for only a few seconds before it disappears, though replays are available for purchase via in-app transactions. Users can add friends from their device's address book and Facebook friends list, or they can enter specific usernames.

To send a picture, users take a snapshot using the in-app camera, set a time limit, select recipients, and send. By tapping and holding their own image in the selfie cam, teens enable facial-recognition software that allows them to add animated effects to their selfies. Videos are captured by continuously pressing the on-screen shutter, and texts are typed.

Users have a Snapchat mailbox, where they can see a list of sent and received messages. In addition, users can live-chat with others if they're online at the same time and know each other's username. Also, users can call each other using video or just audio and can include short video "notes" in chat. In addition to individual chats, users can create groups with up to 16 people.

If users trade Snaps within 24 hours over a period of days, they are in a "Snapstreak. For hands-free snapping, users can buy "Specs," which are glasses that record videos. The plot was repetitive, flat and ridiculous and the whole process of plodding through this book was draining and exhausting. I have never been so glad to get to the end of a book. My daughter didn't enjoy this book either, even though I tried to keep my irritation and boredom to myself. Our tastes veer towards the more dark, weird and funny. On a positive note, when reading aloud, we hugely enjoyed making dolphin noises whenever those dreadful mermaids spoke, to liven them up a bit, and break the monotony of their endless, shallow nonsense.

We also discussed at length how unkind they were to one another, and how selfish they were, eg Emily emotionally blackmailing Shona to take her on a huge, tiring journey to see her father in Mermaid prison, telling her that if she was really a best friend, she would do it for her illustrating and condoning some very disturbing and manipulative behaviour.

Emily and her friend work together to solve her family mysteries while building their friendship, and trying to stay away from the evil dictator of the mer-world. The adventures in the ocean are fun to read, and I think middle grade girls would love this book. Not only does the reader get to experience the fantasy world of mermaids, but the story is creative, and includes action and suspense. Emily learns that her father is in an underwater prison and helps him gain his freedom. She also discovers that her parents were breaking the law when they married because they were not both mermaids.

The power of love and the quest for justice take over in this captivating novel making for an enjoyable read. The Tail of Emily Windsnap falls squarely in the latter category with the sad addition in my case of no residual adoration since I never read it as a child. As I read the book, I could see the appeal - I bet as a 7 or 8-year-old I would have loved this book. But harbor no illusions, this book is no good for adults. Poor character development and plot pacing coupled with choppy sentence construction made this a less-than-enjoyable though fortunately short read.

So, ask yourself "am I an 8-year-old girl? Otherwise, I recommend looking elsewhere for your kid lit fix. This seemed like a story someone would write if they were told they HAD to put out another book in a certain time frame, so they just picked a formula and threw it together. It had very little development behind it. And I didn't find the characters believable, which was too bad, because even a formulaic story which, let's face it, stories are basically formulaic can be saved if the characters are believable. So this was a disappointing first encounter with Liz Kessler books, which looked promising; but I'm reading Philippa Fisher's Fairy Godsister and so far it is much, much better. Oct 10, Krishaa. This book shows that even after life changing events things can still turn out for the better. Also it describes how people this age handle things. View all 5 comments. Ich freue mich schon auf weitere Abenteuer mit Emily. What a sparkling, fun read! Emily Windsnap is 12 years old, funny, thoughtful and at times head strong and stubborn. She is starting her first day of 7th grade. Her new middle school is ten times bigger than elementary school and so confusing to her but not everyone else, her best friend is no longer her best friend, she is being picked on and she wonders why mom has never really told her about her dad. Then she learns she has something new and different to be concerned about. What if people fin What a sparkling, fun read!

What if people find out about her big new secret, will she be taken into a lab, ridiculed? No wonder her cereal is getting soggy with all she has to think about. Soon the sublime joys of the new world that her secret opens up for her and meeting her first true best friend Emily's adventure takes off from there with the exciting, fascinating discovery of the world of merfolk and the mystery that starts with her mom's dream and strange forgetfulness. And her overwhelming need to find out why her dad left. All these propel the reader along like a strong swish from Emily's tail.

Liz Kessler builds a magical fantasy world that is very visual and clever. Who wouldn't rather go to these classes? Beauty and Deportment, Diving and Dance and to learn about shipwrecks in History class. Kessler hints at a unique history between the merfolk and the humans which will be fun to explore in upcoming books. This is entertaining enough for adults and children and a wonderful read to share. Emily sneaks off without her mom's consent and pushes her new friend to help her obtain her goals. Consideration needs to be given as to what compels her to do these things and could offer up discussion about whether the end justifies the means.

Emily does have a loving relationship with her mother and that love is part of what drives her. Through Emily the reader gets the message to be comfortable with who you are and not to worry about what others say about you.

I would recommend it for tweens on up through every generation. As Emily's new best friend, Shona, siren in training would say.
