And all of which are part of what is past, part of what is, and part of what is to come. In this chapter, Mr. Gorant finallys it right. It's a shame the whole book isn't written in this tone and light. If it would have been an exceptional, exceptional, work. I bought this book being told it would be great even if I wasn't a sports fan.
I am told Jim is very funny. After reading this book I realize both are true. He is also the same type of as humor as they are more akin to Bourdaine than Sedaris.
I must admit to laughing out loud through every section of the book. As for not being a sports fan he does a great job at bring you to the experience with his observatioons and gives the reader enough backgroud to get a good sense of the "experience". He keeps himself relatable to both sports fans and non sports fans alike with a great balance of passion and knowledge. From his time with the people he meets in Daytona to the craziness of the Superbowl it seems he finds somthing that goes beyond just sports. He manages to find and look for a sort of good quality and in fans that is more human and less alienating than I would expect.
He is introspective enough really breath in the experience. It's the perfect summer read and just in time for Fathers Day My dad is a sports fan I could recomend this to just about anyone! Jim Gorant really knows his stuff. If you love sports and could use a good laugh, don't hesitate to pick up this book and devour it from cover to cover. Life on the Run. Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer. An Incomplete and Inaccurate History of Sport. Always by My Side.

The title should be at least 4 characters long. I enjoyed going on this journey with the author. I am a sports fan, but not to the level that he is. I have followed a few teams devotedly through the years, but I only dabble in other sports from time to time. That said, I was just as interested in the events he visited that are not among my typical sports as I was in the sports I enjoy regularly.

Gorant did a fine job of exploring the uniqueness of each event and venue and trying to capture the fan experience, both from an outsiders point of view and a true believer. I can't argue with his choices of events to include in his list of ten because every sports fan's list would be different. These all would make the lists of many fans, so that is all that is important.
At the end of the day, I was inspired by the book and now all I want to do is throw myself into a game completely and live or die for my team. May 09, Turi rated it liked it Shelves: So I'm not generally a big reader of sports books other than golf, obviously but this one caught my eye: Basically, the author designed a year of traveling around attending the sporting events that he considered to be on the list: Some things were absent - it wasn't an Olympic year, for example.
I really enjoyed his writi So I'm not generally a big reader of sports books other than golf, obviously but this one caught my eye: I really enjoyed his writing, though - it seemed like he was able to lose himself in the moment of a game while still retaining a fairly objective view. Oct 24, Steve rated it really liked it. I really liked it. It was very informative about sports and not the sport it self but the fans and the hoopla around the top events in sports. I'm not really a sports fan but it's a book I'll read again some day.
I recommend it, not just for sports fans but for those of us who are just on the edge of sports. Mar 05, Robert rated it liked it. I am a little upset that Williamsport wasn't on there, but some of his trip choices are cool Final Four and a Packers game. Some of his other trip choices were just not that interesting to me personally Daytona and the Masters.
Once again if you are a sports fan and you want a nice casual read you will probably like it. Jul 28, Michelle rated it really liked it Recommends it for: This book appeals to my list making self as well as my love of sports.
Jim Gorant lists the 10 things he thinks all sports fans should do before they die and then he proceeds to tell the story of each of his adventures as he completes all I have to admit I added a few items to my life to do list after reading this book Jun 02, Carolyn Jones rated it liked it Shelves: Iconic sporting events for the real sports fan. The ten events covered are good selections and I enjoyed reading about them.
