I've been thinking long and hard, trying to decide what I think of this novel. On the one hand, it is beautifully written - the prose expert and precise and effortless - and on the other it depicts a tale of such unbearable, unremitting abuse, that it I've been thinking long and hard, trying to decide what I think of this novel.
On the one hand, it is beautifully written - the prose expert and precise and effortless - and on the other it depicts a tale of such unbearable, unremitting abuse, that it strains against the realm of credibility. I struggled for some time to decide whether the fact that the hero, Jude, meets nothing but continuous abuse from quite literally everyone he meets during his entire upbringing is the result of art or accident, or lack of writerly imagination, or perhaps, worst of all, a cynical desire to shock, to thrill.
Because shock and intrigue and thrill, it does, and this ultimately makes the novel a most uncomfortable read. We do long to find out exactly what "happened" to Jude, and we're none the nicer for facing our desire to "rubber-neck". This novel covers an epic timescale and multiple and complex lives, and, as I said, is beautifully written. Unlike many reviewers, at no point did I consider this too long, however, I did find it perhaps over simplistic.

One person found this helpful. These novels have interesting plots - and they are short, so can be good from that point of view. However I suspect the author is supported by some of the products she names over and over.
It becomes tiresome and obvious. Also too much repetition about mundane issues. They could be far better edited. Samantha is on adventures after retiring Getting some depth to the characters and has an unusual premise in this story so very different than the others. The author of this series is doing well with making her heroine a likeable and sympathetic person.
