Please try again later. The only comprehensive and authoritative review of Celtic Seership. This social role, occupied by only a small percent of each population, was essential in Celtic and Old Norse populations.
Seers continue on today, and they can be of great assistance to our troubled world. One person found this helpful. Indespensible for anyone wishing to gain insight into what is known about Celtic seers in the ancient and medieval world. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. I expected something different. The info in the book is interesting and informative enough, but had a textbook feel. It was just ok, but not the best book on the subject.
This was an eye-opening book. I'd known for a long time that I could "see" stuff, and that it ran through my mom's side, but I hadn't equated it to Irish seers. This book made me really think about genetic heritage in a spiritual sense. Not what I thought it would be, I can get the same information off the internet for free. This book explores the "bright knowledge," the ability to expand consciousness to perceive the connection between the physical and spiritual worlds: The author claims that with the distractions of modern life we have largely lost this level of understanding, and the ability to discern and interpret omens.
She explains ancient Celtic traditions for those who seek "second sight," which can require a leap of faith as well as determined application. A great deal of the text relates ancient legends of Celts, druids and faeries, tales of divination and prophecy, spells, and native wisdom that the contemporary reader will likely find strange, irrelevant, pointless, and otherwise opaque, especially when these stories are strewn with Gaelic names and terms.
They often seem to invoke superstition more than intuition.
However, at the end of each of the nine chapters the author gives a thoughtful and lovely "Practice" to guide the reader's personal inquiry. She includes careful notes on her sources, plus a glossary, bibliography and index. Perhaps the larger question is whether we need to recognize and interpret omens when there are more inclusive spiritual philosophies and ways to interact with the world around us. I respect the author's good intentions, but this obscure approach seems "the long way around" when more comprehensive information on a relationship with the natural world is available again and easier to grasp.
There are related books on such topics by the author's partner, John Matthews, plus the work of R. Ogilvie Crombie, the respected R. Stewart and others of the British revival, and the excellent work of David Spangler's active circle in the Lorian Association.
The book itself is a lovely thing, a pleasure to hold in the hand - intimate, handsomely designed and well bound. It will probably never find a large audience, but its scholarship will be appreciated by the serious student of this esoteric lore. See all 10 reviews.
