She attended parochial schools and graduated from Spelman College in Atlanta with a bachelor's degree in political science. Following college, she went to work in clothing stores and met Sullivan at a fashionable Atlanta boutique where she was working. After about a year of dating, they married at his acre estate in Macon on Dec. In the end, the marital problems weren't about race, they were about money and Sullivan's eye for other women. And though Lita had left him once before and threatened divorce when they still lived in Macon, she went back.
The final blow came with the move to Palm Beach, where Lita knew from the start she didn't want to live.
Lita, with plenty of friends and a firm social standing in Atlanta, had no intention of staying on an island where she felt like part of the scenery. She visited there often, and finally, in August while he was on a trip, she hitched a U-Haul to the Mercedes and came home.
And then she filed for divorce. The proceedings were bitter, with Sullivan accusing Lita of drug abuse, adultery and theft, charges her family adamantly denies.
Lita saw her husband as a chronic womanizer who tried controlling her by keeping his hand on the purse strings. Lita wanted the townhouse in Buckhead, a fashionable section of Atlanta that's home to the governor's mansion. She also wanted the fancy furnishings, including the Chippendale mirror and Baccarat crystal, as well as the Mercedes-Benz. Sullivan was in money trouble.
He was behind in Lita's court-ordered temporary support payments and two mortgages on the Palm Beach house were coming due. Her husband, says Lita's mother, responded oddly for a man who had shared nearly 10 years of marriage with a woman. He did not call, send flowers or attend the services.
And when a family member called to ask about donating Lita's skin to a burn center, Sullivan refused to give his permission. The theory is that Lita Sullivan's death was a contract killing.
Though Atlanta police won't confirm the information, news reports have said that about a half-hour after Lita's murder, someone made a collect call to Sullivan's Palm Beach home. The charges were accepted and phone records show the caller was at a pay phone just outside of Atlanta.
Because of this cross-state connection, the FBI was called in and the result of its investigation is the federal grand jury now in session. These loan records indicate that Sullivan listed himself as unmarried on his application. Two months after Lita's death, Sullivan got that new mortgage and promptly paid off the two notes that helped him buy the house in In the midst of the chaos, as his carefully constructed life in Palm Beach crumbles about him, Sullivan took a leave of absense from his coveted post on the Landmarks Preservation Commission, to which he is not expected to return.
Though the Sullivan story is yet to play itself out in various courtrooms, one fact in his life cannot be disputed.
Seven years after Sullivan breezed into Palm Beach hoping to hear his name spoken and see his face in the papers, he has succeeded in a way that even he never imagined. Both were previously married. Sullivan sells the wholesale liquor distributorship in Macon, Ga. Sullivan and Lita move into their Palm Beach home. Lita Sullivan is murdered at her Atlanta townhouse by a man delivering pink roses to her door. In court, Suki Sullivan says she was driving the car when police cited her husband, and charges against her husband are dropped.
Later that month, she is charged with perjury and Sullivan is cited by police for driving with a revoked license. Sullivan announces he's taking a leave of absence from the Landmarks Preservation Commission for personal reasons. And if he picked up a few blisters in the process, they never slowed his pace. And she didn't have to travel far.
At least, that was the side he showed in public. And then there's the matter of money. And that's money he supposedly watched over with care. And she also remembers the lies. She also said that she was "deathly afraid" of her husband. The ending should have been a relief; instead it turned into a tragedy.
But the elegant, sophisticated Lita's real interest was fashion. He was, after all, a decade older than her daughter and he was white. In addition to the acrimony, the divorce was well on its way to being costly. But then, instead of a divorce hearing, Lita Sullivan had a funeral. But now, with his latest divorce, his money woes are beginning again.

Sometimes, a book will come along that is so riveting that by the end of the first chapter you know it will be a late night.
Even though the book is basically those involved in the crime telling the author their parts in these tragic events and, I'm sure they relayed conversations to Mr. In court, Suki Sullivan says she was driving the car when police cited her husband, and charges against her husband are dropped.
